  1. Thanks - looks like Fugawi was pretty popular. Too bad they don't make maps for where I live Vancouver Island).
  2. Thanks Mariner - I think I'll go with Ozi. Oh yeah, I'd like to check out your cache on Mt. Prevost. Any idea what shape the road is in?
  3. Hi MBC I hear ya, nothing is worth getting stressed over, not even work. For me this sport is all about the journey, not the destination. Thanks for the info about Leech Falls (is that the actual name of the cache?) I'll be checkin that one out. I look forward to meeting you one day - my first two finds were caches of yours.
  4. Hi bcrockcrawler, xstitcher & BMXer - what a name to try and remember!! You've raised some good points. I don't think there is really a right and wrong side of this issue. I think that everyone will have their opinion and I agree that it's great that we have a place to share and discuss. I look forward to a future Vancouver Island get together to put some faces to all of these names. I've met a few of you out on the trails, but look forward to meeting more. Just a few things I'd like to throw out there and then a question for the group: - since the article in the TC I have had about half a dozen people, who know that I am a geocacher, as me for more info about the sport. Only one of them asked if it was normal to find $$$ in caches - the others were just interested in the sport and wanted a good reason to get outdoors. I've been sharing what I know and you should see some new cachers in the area soon. - I just read over the FAQ pages and there are actually several references in there about putting $$$ in caches. One reference states that it may make it more interesting - no real point here, just pointing out that the people who set up this site did consider it. Now to my question: I will be taking some of the $$$ that I did recover from a KFWB cache and be using it to build and then hide my first few caches in the near future. The contents will be more along the lines of "traditional" caches. But I would like to make the hunt more challenging. How would people feel about a normal cache being hidden using some of the same methods that KFWB are using?
  5. I couldn't agree more. I'll admit that I haven't been involved in this sport for all that long, but I can't see anything wrong with what Team KFWB is doing at all. In fact, I see a number of benefits to what they are doing: - they are generating more interest, participation and publicity for the sport - what's wrong with that? - they are taking me to new places I would not have gone - they are making me want to go out and learn all kinds of new things (projections, co-ordinate conversions, trigonometry....) I'm in the same boat as Canadazuuk, I don't have any fancy software or toys, yet. But they are sure igniting my desire to learn. And I plan on placing my first cache(s) soon. It won't be a big $$$ one because I can't afford it, but it will require some effort to find it. It's been said before - if you don't like these kinds of caches then don't look for them. There are plenty of "traditional" caches to go around. They are not trying to change the sport, only to make it more interesting and exciting. Some of the techniques they are using could be applied to traditional caches to make them more interesting as well. Keep up the great work TEAM KFWB GPS!!
  6. Thanks - I think I've almost decided on Ozi Explorer and now I'm trying to decide between ETopo and Spectrum Maps. Anyone out there with a recommendation?
  7. Shhhhhhh! Don't tell too many people []
  8. If I have two know points, and a comppass bearning from each point is there software that will tell me where the two lines will meet, if I don't know the distances involved?
  9. I want to get some mapping software and I've narrowed down my choices to Ozi Explorer and Fugawi with E Topo maps. Any recommendations? I live in BC - thanks
  10. Just started using this last week and it works great. It's an Excel spreadsheet Conversion spreadsheet
  11. Thanks JDMC - they do have a comparison but it's with older versions, so it doesn't include the latest features, but there is a lot of great info on that site.
  12. I've received good comments on both so I need someone to really convince me of the benefits of one vs. the other. I want to use it with my Garmin Venture for: - caching - real time position and tracking - creating routes for upload/download
  13. Yes you can - I hook up my Venture and use EasyGPS to upload/download info right now - I am looking at getting Fugawi or Ozi Explorer to give me real time position display and tracking and the ability to plan tracks and routes - ExpertGPS doesn't have maps for the area I live in (Western Canada).
  14. Thanks Olar - I forgot to mention that I live in Canada and Fugawi doesn't have maps that cover this area, so I would have to use maps from another source.
  15. Sorry if this has been asked before - I'm trying to decide between Fugawi and Ozi Explorer. I'll be using it mainly for caching and hiking. I want live GPS display and tracking, the ability to input waypoint and routes and download them to my Garmin Venture. Any reason to choose one over the other?
  16. Thanks for replies - that is the info I was looking for.
  17. Just new to this and I had a few questions about downloading caches to EasyGPS. When I download a new cache is there any way I can get it to go directly into an existing file I already created in EasyGPS or do I have to open it in the temp file and copy it over? Also - does anyone edit cache/waypoint names before you download them into your GPS so they make more sense or do you just leave the cache number as the waypoint name. Sorry if these have been asked before, so many forums so little time.
