So I have temporarily disabled 3 of my caches that you have to drive to...We just can't take the chance..If you go after the other's PLEASE be very carefull and carry lot's of water....R [This message was edited by MercRocks on August 24, 2003 at 09:05 PM.]
  2. Scary pictures I heard that there is ( right now) a voluntary back country travel ban in BC from Prince George to US border/ Van Isle to AB border.. Please respect it, or be VERY VERY carefull... ... Pray for Rain ... Without your brain, a map is a piece of coloured paper, a compass is a glorified magnet, and a GPS is a waterproof battery case." 3. Just make sure it is VERY strong. I was crossing over a fence using a neat looking natural pine stick I had found and "thought" was strong...Ha, I used it to steady myself on going over to the downside when the next thing I know I hear SNAP and I'm falling...Luckily quick roll and I landed on my back using my pack to break the fall...I thought to myself DARN i broke my "nice looking" hiking stick,as I held one of the pieces in my hand, then I look to the left of me and sure enough snapped in two.. Only problem was the other piece was still stuck in the ground with a nice jaggy point sticking up right beside me..Missed by -- that much...About that time the shakes started with the relization how close I came to being the first geocacher shish-ka-bob... OUCH... R Without your brain, a map is a piece of coloured paper, a compass is a glorified magnet, and a GPS is a waterproof battery case." " Foothills SAR "

  5. Yep, It also happened to me with htis cacheBlue as the Sky I had just checked up another of mine reported missing in action, which it was and decided to check the other. The last to find only three days before saw my note and mailed me a clue on where to find it. Sure enough moved over a meter away. Looked like a critter wanted the black string attached to the micro...Pretty funny Without your brain, a map is a piece of coloured paper, a compass is a glorified magnet, and a GPS is a waterproof battery case." 9. BC Ferries Queen of Vancouver we hit about 36 km/hour running with the tide I suspect, leaving Active pass on the Vancouver side. It was also neat to see the track we layed down as we had to swing hard to miss a couple of really STUPID sailboat operators...Right turn Cylde.... 11. I spent the day yesterday hunting for Placer/Mineral claim posts in the wilds of beautiful B.C. I find it a lot more challenging than caching though. First you have the fun of taking the coord's of a topo claim map using UTM, which builds in about a 10 m difference. On the older claims the coord's arn't plotted using a GPS, just by where the staker figured he was. Then entered in the GPS and away you go. I got lucky on my first two finds, one was right beside the road, and the next was only about 20 m away from the road. Good thing because the GPS said 50 m more to go, which would have put me abot a 100 m almost straight downhill. Got to the other end of the claim to look for a witness post and GPS said only 40 m uphill just off the road...NOT ended up 70 m further up.. Huff and puff, grunt and groan (+ 32 C) yesterday.... The other I checked out was a new one so not to bad to find because if done properly you have a blaze and flagging line to find.. Only problem though was had to follow it for 800 m and the staker hadn't cut the under brush as he had too, and it was all steep sidehill, and a couple of Talus slides to cross . Did get to practice CITO though amazingly found a old pop can and a stubby beer bottle... Ye Ha I wish everyday was that good... Anyone else????? 13. Members of Comox Valley Search and Rescue along with a RCMP helicopter were also used to look for the men.......... I hope that the supposed $ 5000.00 they were going after will now be donated to the Comox Valley Search and Rescue Society????? The R.C.M.P. supplied the helicopter at about $ 1500.00 an hour ie: Taxpayers.....Search and Rescue Society's are manned and equippped all by VOLUNTEERS who risk thier lives every time they respond, give up family commitments, miss work etc.. I think that a BIG donation is the least they could do... Without your brain, a map is a piece of coloured paper, a compass is a glorified magnet, and a GPS is a waterproof battery case." 18. One thing that trips a red flag "better check it out" is when someone logs 2 of your 4 caches in the generally same area.. checking the one's out they missed, I found the first one missing and the second one This blatent plug not rehidden properly....Which in turn made me investigate my othermore blatent plugging that was also not rehidden properly...The 2 not rehidden properly were by the same cacher I'm guessing...So red flag to watch for.... 19. I got a couple weeks work with a local surveyor looking for 1895 corner posts. He had to resurvey them in for a new mine lease. As a added bonus, I also learned how to run transverse lines as well. Sure was neat to find the old posts if we were lucky, or the witness posts. Original survey listed 8" fir, Now 35" tree hardly anything showing , we cut into it and sure enough there's the roman numerals cut over 100 years ago...Wow...Got me interested in learning how to be a differential GPS operator...Now wouldn't that be a nice GPS to cache with..........R Without your brain, a map is a piece of coloured paper, a compass is a glorified magnet, and a GPS is a waterproof battery case." 22. My contribution is Knapweedknapweed. It takes over native grasses quite easily..VERY INVASIVE. The technique I use is to place feet on each side and gently pull. I try not to disturb the soil as each plant drops thousands of seeds. Dispose of by bagging and landfilling. There is light at the end of the tunnel when battling this weed. I've been pulling a patch in my yard for 5 years now..Year 1 overflowing 45 gal bag..year 2 full bag..year 3 half bag..year 4 quarter bag...year 5 hardly any...So please familiarize yourself with your local invasive weeds and help save your native grasses. 24. This didn't take long to get into name calling did it!!! I think some cachers don't rehide properly because they probally had trouble finding the cache and they are going to help the next finder by leaving it a bit exposed etc......Misguided, yes...good intentions,Yes New to the game probally the biggest problem... So PLEASE REHIDE AS FOUND..blah blah bla Without your brain, a map is a piece of coloured paper, a compass is a glorified magnet, and a GPS is a waterproof battery case." " FSAR "
  25. I agree with you 100%, just what we need more frickin rules ahhhhh even worse set in cement to boot aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh... as for transit caches....I hope that the PTB will reconsider the transit caches...BC now has at least 5 transit caches and I do not remember hearing any problems with them, besides the usual, missing, allready scooped etc...I've been preparing one for the Similkameen and now NOT ALLOWED...Bummmer...hope things change..Ha HA...R Without your brain, a map is a piece of coloured paper, a compass is a glorified magnet, and a GPS is a waterproof battery case."
