  1. Still no sign of ours in the mail yet. Since there is a HUGE snowstorm in Ontario, and Quebec today and us folks in the Maritimes are getting it tonight/tomorrow I'm starting to think it wasn't meant to be

Can't wait to see them though whenever they show up! Especially can't wait to see "faulty" coin... it'll be a great conversation piece at events!

  2. "Long way your big jib draw"

Maybe I can tackle this question, being from Newfoundland and all. It is a common slang saying, at least common a generation or two ago, and simply put it means may you always have good fortune.

The saying is commonplace in the Screech-ing in of non-Newfoundlanders. The ceremony includes having a healthy dose of Newfie Screech Rum (potent stuff), wearing traditional fishing gear, kissing a fresh-from-the-water codfish (or puffin's backside), and saying a traditional Newfoundland saying ie. Long way your big jib draw!

Since I'm here I may as well put some light on the rest of coins symbolisms. The lighthouse on one side of the coin is Cape Spear, which is the most easterly point in North America. Flipping the coin over, the flag is known as the Republic of Newfoundland, the very first flag of the province back in early settlement, but is now the unofficial flag of the province; and represents two of its early settlers: the Irish (green) and the British (pink) and peace of the two in between (white).

Hope this clarifies the meaning of this quote and the symbolism of the coin itself. Love the coin btw, I have been waiting for its release date for quite some time. I'm getting two black versions from our coin buying group.

  3. Thanks for all of your input, it seems we've sparked quite the debate which is always a good thing!

An update to this story, the cache has since been disabled by a reviewer until the owner can settle the issue with the school board.

We feel kind of bad b/c it got disabled b/c the owners are quite crafty with their caches, especially their micros. So I'm hoping they can work something out so the next group of cachers to wander in there don't get crapped on like we did, oh well... such is life i guess.

  4. Maybe someone should make a coin to signify the 40th anniversary of the Leafs last cup win. You never know this year could be the lucky year that a whole wack of Leaf's fan's wish comes true... hey it happened in Boston for the Sox!

  5. Yesterday we decided that we both had an hour to kill so what better thing to do than hit up a couple local caches! This caching trip was going to mark our 99th and 100th find!

The first cache went according to plan, a micro in an area of town I didn't know existed.

The second cache (our 100th) also went according to plan until went came off the trail and got in our vehicle. Before we could get in we were harassed by a lady who was in the building next to the cache (an Adult High School), she came out steaming like an over-heated kettle "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?" so Beth said that we were just going to a walk (we weren't expecting such a snappy question). The lady then went on to say "DID YOU KNOW YOU ARE TRESSPASSING ON SCHOOL BOARD PROPERTY?!", we politely said that we didn't know and apologized and then the lady said "GOOD! DON'T COME BACK!" and with that she turned on her heels and went back inside the building.

We were very upset by this event, it was supposed to be a happy time since we were celebrating our 1st of many to come milestones, and it really put a damper on our happiness.

I know we had a similar incident with one of our caches (a micro on our university campus) with some cachers and a over-anxious security guard, but I know for a fact that all of the campus is open for public viewing, since it is part of the Dept of Ag & Fish some of the taxpayers dollars go towards its infrastructure.

My question is what should (or would) you do if you were placed in a similar situation???

  6. The caches that we have hidden usually take 3-4 days. It depends on if the reviewer has a question for you and how quick you reply to that question. I guess the main key is to have patience, and acknowledge the great job the volunteer reviewers do to have a relatively quick turn-over.

  7. I use Rayovac 15min rechargables. I like having a couple sets of them at full power, and I usually take a set with me on the trails just in case. I havn't had any complaints with these batteries: last quite a while, and charge pretty quickly too. I guess if worse came to worse I'd just steal them out of my camera (or sneak them from the gf's GPS haha... but I didn't say that!)

  8. Your prices seem a bit high...especially since some of the coins can still be bought from the makers for almost half your prices and with cheaper shipping.

I had the same feeling, the coins are definitely appealing but the higher price + shipping + conversion to $CDN for me deter me from buying or enquiring.
