  1. Looks like if I disable a listing because the cache has gone missing and then re-enable this does not count for maintenance.
  2. PQ is the only way I know of to search for attributes.
  3. The best hide I've seen in a cemetery was in the little flower holder. The family placed it there to honor their fathers love for geocaching. That was the exception though most are off to the side or close by.
  4. How is this any different than cemetery caches? Besides the cache predates the memorial. I like how you give the option for specific instructions now to help. We forget that if someone does not want to find a specific cache they can simply walk away and add it to their ignore list. Funny that the person complaining still searched for and logged the logged it. Maybe you can add a little more info if it is available.
  5. I had posted awhile back asking should we expect attributes to be accurate. The consensus on that was pretty much no. With the explosion of attribute challenge caches it only encourages CO's to place hard to get attributes to encourage folks to come to their caches. Some how I have 4 finds with scuba gear required. I personally need one more cache with livestock for a challenge where I need 50. In that case only once did I ever have a run in with free range cows and man mama cow did not like the dog I had with me on that find. I am a huge fan of challenges but attribute challenges tend to be bogus I'd rather have name challenges but those aren't allowed but attributes are. Go figure. I truly wish that attributes would be accurate for the cache. I like the hike length ones and tree climbing these seem to be mostly accurate when used as it helps me personally. The rest seem to be random meh.
  6. Thanks for sharing. Now I'm inspired to take Leonard our geo-dog out tomorrow to find a cache or two.
  7. I suspect that the data does not lie and that these promotions do have a value to the entire geocaching community. Like them or not no one forces you to do anything different than your day to day normal caching activity. For some though it's just an excuse to binge and go for that souvenir. I suspect that a few of those non-paying folks decide that this is pretty fun to do and switch to a paying membership. After all it takes money to maintain and run the servers. In the end we all benefit. We all know you can't get them all the same should apply to souvenirs and this should not be something to complain about. Personally I'm all in. 326 caches away from reaching 1000 in a year, I've been committed since January when I found my one and only 100 in a day. No one forced me to try for this and once I complete it I'll probably never do it again, I definitely don't want to do a solo 100 in a day again. I keep saying this but the great thing about this hobby is you can play it any way you want. Find 1 a week or 1 a day it's up to you. Have fun!
  8. You can always make one with a 3d printer
  9. Um the app might be free but the phone is crazy expensive. Several times I'm the booster or the human ladder. Sometimes I'm the climber. Sometimes I take the pictures. Sometimes I let my kids do it because they enjoy it. Sometimes I say not today. In all but that last one I claim a find.
  10. Obviously some people like those caches otherwise why would they hide them there. If they aren't interesting to you put them on your ignore list. I'm not a big fan of certain types of puzzles but some people love themes they are a part of the game. This game allows you to play it in any way you choose. You can not find them all.
  11. So as previously recommended I open them up and check. My categories are: 1) Challenges (Love them) a) Qualify or feasible to a crazy mortal. b) No thank you, ex not going to be caching on five different continents any time soon, ignore 2) Puzzles - nice entertaining might take a few attempts, logic puzzles, ciphers, the list is endless 3) I have no clue where to even start - These just go on my ignore list. List of numbers, programming languages I don't know. I have a long ignore list . You can't find them all.
  12. I have an example to support. But I agree the higher terrain usually means the longer the hike until it comes to the need for a boat or climbing a tree. We had a prolific hider in the area and he had a multi series (which I really enjoyed) that had around 10-25 avid finders of. He used the terrain rating (right or wrong) to indicate the distance effort required between multi stages. Typically it was a two stage multi and a T5 would have around 500-1000 miles of driving required I even got a FTF on one of them. I was fortunate that one stage was close to my parents place and got on a visit. Two weeks later my father came down and we went for the final at the beach we had a blast. You learned quickly to gather the local info for the first waypoints and then group them on weekend cacheing excursions as you criss crossed the town and state.
  13. I unfortunately had to go to cvs yesterday myself. The parking lot was littered with 6 pairs of discarded gloves. Come on people!
  14. The last cache I placed the reviewer asked for details of the hide. In that conversation I propose talking about the attributes assigned.
  15. How about getting a few college interns from down the street to help with this excellent idea? Though Siri offline you'll have to talk to Apple.
  16. Four options I see here 1) Virtual Caches 2) Earth Caches 3) Go check out Waymarking 4) and Benchmarks. I mostly agree upon the logging requirement to touch a log, though I will take a picture as proof in conditions where I do not have a pen, or the log is unsignable.
  17. So I was thinking about asking a question on challenge caches and why searching if the subject had already been covered or not I stumbled across attributes. Personally not a big fan of challenge caches requiring attributes, but I go for them anyway. The main reason is many caches don't use them at all even when appropriate. Then you have the guys who use the scuba gear required in the middle of a desert. I see too many fakes. So my question to the forum is should we expect these settings to be accurate and reviewed at the time of publishing? Are all really useful? Personally I have tried to have them be accurate. I also have used them in multiple occasions to decide if I wish to do that find or not. If these become part of the reviewing process would you expect a NM log to be filed on a PNG listed as a 10KM hike?
  18. I think HQ is listening to their lawyers on this one by saying nothing. As for disabling caches should someone log one of those and documents the find. The log will be reinstated. The way the CO can truly justify deletion is if the cache is removed and then they could not sign the log. Many of us have logged even archived caches not to mention disabled. There is no violation of the terms of service and thus the log deletion will not be upheld in my opinion. I have a nearby cache to test on soon. With trespassing on closed parks, well if they get caught they will have to deal with the consequences. Why should anyone else care. Today after work I had to get out. So took the back way over the hill to the ocean and found 14 caches most haven't been found in 3 months or more a coupe a couple of weeks ago. I interacted with no one. Tomorrow since it is going to rain at some point will be doing more back road caching, last weekend I came closer to a cow than an actual person on a hike never understood the livestock attribute till then, a little scary having a mama cow not liking your dogs presence.
  19. I'm torn by this. For responsible COs and the like, great give them more time specially if the request is simple and fixable. Communication needs to initiated by CO as long as an extension is requested. If the cache is missing definitely disable. If the authorities are saying no driving then how can you be expected to go check on the cache. For the COs that have obviously abandoned the cache or has never maintained any of their caches, I vote no. Disable and unless requested it get archived, which rarely happens. This is not going to blow over any time soon.
  20. I saw that here one CO did that as I was planning on going for that cache and had it in a separate list and trail looks fairly unused as it is. I may still do this and document my find. Funny thing is the county parks are more crowded than ever as is neighborhood walkers. Social Distancing in effect, even on narrow trails. I read the proclamation somewhere and it specifically mentions exercise being one of the reasons to go outside but to be safe at the same time. So unless the rules change, and they may lets hope not, I think it should be the responsibly of the finder not the CO or GS, now that liability waiver might get a new addition. I am personally avoiding urban areas, and spent the time in suburban and natural areas.
  21. Here is a run down of my last few NA logs all within the last month but haven't filed one for a long time before that usually do file the NM log. 1) No logging in the past 3 years. Few months of DNFs with a clear hint and an admitted throw down of a go in a plastic baggie. 6/8 of co's hides archived. - Funny thing is he logged in to archive his cacache 2)No logging in the past 5 1/2 years. No finds in 2 1/2 years with multiple dnfs posted. A little over half of co's hides archived - currently disabled 3) I kind of was mad at wasting my time on this one. No finds in a year with over 100+ finds and was being logged a lot and often. 3 dnfs posted indicating the gz became a homeless camp. To me I felt the cache was being neglected and if I brought a young kid to this cache for their first experience great I now have to explain why there was dirty underwear hanging from the branch and don't touch those needles. Oh and now they don't want to do this anymore. Also it was not safe. - co moved the cache across the street I have filed one long ago due to a complaint from the landowner about not wanting folks on his property. I'm sure there would be no arguments on this one. Funny thing was they blocked the whole area as the CO wanted to move it but was not allowed it had been muggled a lot, and replaced by CO a lot. So I'm perfectly fine filing NA/NM/DNF logs, please don't write a note saying there is a problem, that just does not work most of the time. So NAs I typically reserve for neglect and where it seems the process is not being followed or some kind of new danger, there have been a few of those. NRA is really the main purpose there. NM's are for the CO to come do something to improve this cache. I truly wish log maintenance were excluded but understand why some do it that way. I have filed several "false" NM on potential missing containers but those typically have very specific hints and/or string of DNFs. I will file a NM on a cache where SWAG needs clearing out usually caused by a waterproofing issue and that stuff animal is now a waterlogged moldy mess, I don't get the swag thing and NO CANDY. DNFs if I searched the area I'll file the DNF. I see DNFs help remind me I tried that one and failed. So I might think twice before trying again if at all. Has people found it since I was there or several other DNFs nope skipping till CO takes care of it. DNF can help other caches to say hey there may be a problem here. It can also help the attentive CO so that a NM or reviewer never comes along. Funny this weekend I DNFed a multi from 2002. I admitted that I was majorly distracted by the swarm of ants climbing on my body (my third least favorite caching event). That I hopped it was not where I met the ants and that I had suspended my search. The CO is long gone. I got 3 messages offering to check my coordinate and if I wished help. This was totally awesome. I learned that the ants were there a few months ago. That the ant tree with the awesome hollow at the base was not were to search. Good to know. I discovered the area I was searching at the time of discovery of said ants, they started biting me and I had to remove my shirt, was were I should actually be. So I will return on that. I was not a fan of community maintenance of abandoned caches, they all used the watch function, maybe this could be a model for remote caches. This has changed my mind that in some cases it can work. Maybe the powers that be could think about this. The whole cache property thing is junk, specially after throwdowns but that is for a different thread. Maybe add a footer that the cache is being maintained by the community.
  22. One of my favorite titles was a puzzle cache - GCPBHZ husTle PrIze zoNe Can you do this without an anagram solver?
  23. Let's face it a lot of caching containers are in the elements. Handwashing/cleaning is a must. I found this one yesterday, yuck. Let alone touching fire hydrants with remnants of dog or human pee. I got a fresh one a week or so ago lol. All part of the game. Wash those hands. As stated it is one of the best activities I can think of. Was sent to work from home you bet I'll be getting out now I have and extra hour and a half less time spent commuting.
  24. My advice for the CO is to archive the cache. And relist, tweak the puzzle or not. Or a new puzzle. Or a traditional. If you want more finds which he had initially start over. Few out of the area folks are going to go after a stagnate cache let alone one that requires more of an effort which puzzle caches do. This pattern I have witnessed on cache after cache, and even on my own caches. As for replacement well my personal archivals I'll share. The first was I placed it during the summer it went missing on the first day of school there was a bus stop right there. Needless It is still vacant. The second my waterproofing failed and I could not come up with a better replacement the area remains unfilled. I have made use twice of existing areas once the previous was archived. My apologies for highjacking, at the time that was not my intent, in reflection I can see how it can be viewed that way. It was meant as supporting the refresh of his area since the people that have already solved it are the only ones in that area that are going to solve it.
