  1. Sorry for posting twice. But I wanted to get the model number right. Hope it does someone some good!! Andrew
  2. I use an LBE from the military with modified ammo pouches, a butt pack, and a home made 1 day pack. If needed, I also have my large rucksack with frame, but thats more for full day hikes rather than Geocaching...
  3. Updated: Could not update title in previous post. Sorry. GPS-315 Please check my website for full ebay listings. Cable is still avaliable as of 20 July 2006. Auction ends in 5 days. http://th3ub3rg33k.com Thanks for looking... 11B out...

  5. I import GPXs into GPSDash2. Check my profile for more info. HTH, 11B out...
  6. Im a woods person myself, the further I have to go off a trail and hump into the bush to find the cache, the happier I am. Its an Infantry thing, you wouldnt understand. :-) But seriously, theres a lot of caches out there, not everyone will be happy with every cache. It cant get more simpler than that. 11B out...
  7. Did you pay your bill? J/K, I dont have anything productive to contribute but I couldnt resist. :-)
  8. Why not a yellow eTrex or Explorist 100? You said your getting started, those are good budget "getting started" GPSrs..
  9. JPEGs GIFs PocketWord and Text files all work great on my PPC. :-) Sorry, had to get a stab in. Actually, thats great news you can do that on a GPS unit! Cool deal!
  10. I bet I could take mine to Gitmo. :-)
  11. Im running my old Axim X5 with updated WM2003. I have *zero* problems. HTH, 11B
  12. Ive tested several, and settled on GPSDash2. I create my topos and arial photos on usaphotomaps (google it), calibrate it in there Map Manager, transfer them to SD card, and off I go. Works *wonderfully*. HTH, 11B
  13. GPSDash2 http://gpsdash.com Also check my profile for more information..... and more information will follow. So check back on it from time to time. HTH, 11B
  14. During my time in the Infantry, I was forced to use a PLUGER. 3 hours later after reading the manual and doing as it said, we finally had 2 of them initilized. Woo Woo! Well, all was good until we put them in use. It cycled so slow you were lucky to navigate and when you did get co-ords, it wasnt accurate. Thank GOD I took my Megallen GPS-315 with me, it had MGRS built in (back in the day, it was a rare datum), I used it (as I did before) to get within 20 feet of my target. I *hope* that the current s are much better, else theres gonna be a lot of lost soldiers out there! 11B out...
  15. Looks like a lot of people are not too keen on using a PPC (Not Palm!) to GPS with. If I had a day to navigate with them using mine, they would walk away wishing they had gone a similar direction as I did. 1) Get a waterproof bag, about $40. I can provide the links if you wish. In the mean time, Im using a zip lock freezer bag and it protects my device from water, rain and dirt. Problem solved. 2) If you are careless with your gear, its gonna get busted. Take care of you equipment and it will take care of you. Problem solved. 3) If you already have a PPC, a GPSr is about $70 and the software is about $24. Invested: $94 or so dollars. So, for less than a yellow eTrax or an Explorist 100, you get ultra sensitivity, color, moving topo maps, moving arial photos, fast cycling direction compas, and easily store and import GPX and LOC files. If you want, you can listen to MP3s while your doing this (I dont myself, but theres still this weird MP3 craze going on). I also can pull up JPEGs of maps screen capped off Google maps (of the GC), make and update PocketWord documents (many of which have added details on the cache). Problem solved. Id be interested in other's with PPC and GPSr that use them *regularly* reply on this thread. This remind me, I have my new pure digital camcorder (read: records onto SD memory in MPEG4) coming, Ive got to get some videos put together to showcase this awesome setup. HTH, 11B out...
  16. Read my profile, I only use a PPC for GPS/mapping/street navigation. My "real" GPSr has been retired to my 9 yo daughter. In short, Ive field tested several programs, only GPSDash2 came out the winner. Some like Bee Line, but IMHO its a long cry from Dash. HTH, 11B
  17. I havent run into but 1 yet, it was a hiking trail, and I was in my hiking garb, no words were exchanged... He didnt have a GPS that I could see, but I wondered if he was GCing. Anyway... "Ive received orders to scout out the next landing spot for the mother ship" There are several others here that are very good! 11B out...
  18. Google up "usaphotomaps", its free and GREAT! I use it to make arial photo and topo maps for my PocketPC to use with GPSDash2 software! Anyway, you can plot out co-ords or address! 11B out...
  19. They all have there own little strengths and weeknesses, but they all are good units. Of course like all things, the more you spend the more you get. From what Ive seen with http://tigergps.com they not only have great prices, but also very good satisfaction rating. HTH, 11B
  20. Now Ive seen it, a Pinz... Now I want to see a GCer with a Unimog! :-)
  21. Id have to bump the Axim too... Having both SD and CF slots, I run my GPSr on the CF, then have a 1gig in the SD. With everything so far, Ive got 960 meg free. Just enough room for 2 full length Divx movies. :-) But seriously, Id look for the dual slot feature, will give you a *lot* more freedom! On the Ultra Mobile PC, I never heard of them. My loss, Im researching them now. Im sure they are more than I can afford, but Im interested! :-) HTH, 11B
  22. Check my GC.COM profile for my setup. Everything (but the software) can be had on ebay. Id rather have an external GPSr as the patch antenna is going to be MUCH larger and give better reception IMHO. The one built into the PPC would likely be small, and thus not be suited for anything other than urban scouting. HTH, 11B
  23. So far, Ive only hurt my pride. I too carry a small stock of first aid supplies, along with some other assorted junk for the trail. Though, I am also getting into hiking, if its a woods cache, I strap up with my hiking gear, including walking stick, and Im off. See my avatar or my profile for pix of me looking like a fool, but always prepared. The Army taught me, dont go out with nothing, its foolish.
