  1. Something with at least a little ground clearance.... For the full story we really do love the car though... good mpg for a non hybrid
  2. We once looked for the final stage of a multi for about 15 minutes. The clue basically implied it was in a bush. After a while of not being able to zero in a spot between two bushes, we finally figured out that the entire third bush where it was supposed to be was gone. It was pretty easy to figure out once we realized that the ground was all torn up and we found the camoed lid to the container on the ground!
  3. Since I still live in the small town I grew up in and I have placed caches in the area, I have gotten in touch with someone from high school that I haven't talked to in 14 years. One of my caches was found by a former teacher of mine and another was found by one of my current students (his family anyway)! My husband found out recently that his boss is a geocacher and neither had any idea that the other did it. A woman at my school is a geocacher and worked right down the hall for a year and I had no idea, she had previously done a large school wide geocaching activity and everything (at a different school)! I have heard that another coworker of mine is a cacher and I know of one other family from my school who does it, and for some reason it seems like more of them want to get involved.. maybe because I tell them about my weekends sometimes... Maybe we should have little icons for people we discover. <-- joke
  4. As an educational professional, I must say, I agree.
  5. Were the parents the LEAST concerned with the child's behavior??? These women had the nerver to call the police on you? Did you ask the officers if it was allowable to let your children wander off into the woods alone? I deal with children and parents every day on a regular basis. Security is a huge issue when ever children are involved. The truth is, all parents want security for their kids but very few of them want to deal with the hassles that it involves! Its easier to call the police than to teach the kids not to go into the woods to see strangers. Anyway. I would do a cache on a playground. I am female though and it probably makes a huge difference in perception. I don't think people should stop placing them but if people don't want to look for them they have a valid reason.
  6. Ok, I changed the coords, seems like that was popular opinion and made the most sense! Thanks for your replies!
  7. I like some caches on private property/private homes. I have one, cachers seem to find it amusing. At mine there are clear indicators that you are in the right spot. I have met a handful of cachers. I enjoy seeing people visit but many have visited while we were not home. My property line runs adjacent to public land so people use it often anyway. I have about 2 acres of land, and at one time the previous owner thought of turning it into a park. I think each person and cache is different. I believe that any one who would go out of their way to lure me to their home for whatever reason probably wouldn't have the patience to wait for me and would just go directly to my home page look up my last name in the area of most of my caches and come to my house. Anyone who wanted to watch you do one of their caches could just as easily hide on in the park across the street and NOT TELL YOU that they lived near by. Honestly the caches that say "be stealthy the neighbors are watching" scare me more! Then you have no idea what they mean, are they just trying to be nice, or do they live there?? In my opinion home caches are a nice place for TBS because there is less likelyhood of them getting stolen. The container we have hidden is a 5 gallon pail with a lid which can hold a lot of stuff I haven't seen many public places that it could blend in but I don't do many 4/5 terrains either. My cache is a multi cache with two stops along the way, it basically leads the cacher along the line that I would like them to follow so that they aren't in anyone elses yard. It would be really hard for them to get off track. Some people have written that they feel weird but I feel weird doing some caches that I am sure others would love. Its probaly just like anything else, if they are done nicely then people will do them without complaint and if they are poopy people will do them anyway and complain or auto ignore them.
  8. Dave and I placed a cache a few months back that has had a chronic problem of being removed. Its an easy micro in a cemetary (I know some people don't like them). We have relocated the cache about 150 feet away in hopes that people will leave it alone. Its a new container and log since the old one has been stolen (well actually we have one of the old containers because we found it in a different spot in the cemetary) so do we make a new cache page or change the old one? I looked but I couldn't find any thing in other forum posts.
  9. I just tried to add some stuff a few days ago and was totally denied! Its on there now though! More to come I am sure... Thanks for posting about it or I wouldn't have known!
  10. Other than mandatory gardening geocaching is basically the only reason I go outside. I like the beach and would walk a nature trail once in a great while if heavily prompted but I would neve have considered myself a outdoors lover. Now I cache as often as possible and have been to many places that I would have never seen. BTW-Thrak.. good for you! I think the computer can be extremely addictive and its good you have found something else to do! I used to spend 8-10 hours a day in chat rooms if you can believe that, makes me cringe now.
  11. Possible new logo, "If ya didn't sign it, ya didn't find it." I draw the line when the log book is soaking wet, I replace (if they are total MUSH with an offer to mail to owner) or attempt to dry it out (usually works). I am thinking of carrying a blow dryer.
  12. I usually record what I trade in the book and online, it lets the owner know what I left there, it lets the next cacher know what is there and it does help me remember where I was. There are some duplicate cache names that I have noticed around so when I go back and read my logs I can get a visual clue on what I did. I also like to know where my little trade items have gone. Its neat to see that someone else grabbed my hand sanitizer. I can sit here late at night when I can't sleep and read all of the logs in a matter of minutes where as I could never go back and see what of mine was taken if it was only written in the log book. Its also cool to see people who found something in a cache and got REALLY excited about it. Caching isn't about the "stuff" but it is really cool when someone finds something in a cache that they adore.
  13. Atleast I didn't say a quality cache was determined by the NUMBER of ice cream shops nearby! Anyhow.. I am happy that Doc was inspired, now he gets the climax and I still get the ice cream. I think I am going to add an "ethics" section too my profile too.
  14. I was wondering how long till someone wrote me a hate email about mine... None yet, but I have only had it two days. I guess I should say that the first part of the quote is just to say that everyone likes something different and what appeals to one cacher might not to another and SO what. I don't like white cars but they still make them. The last line is to let people know that I am a large woman and I am not insecure or angry about it and that geocaching can be done by everyone no matter there size, shape or physical abilities. Another post in the forum mentioned that some cachers are so fat they can't do 5/5 caches. It started to bother me a little and I asked my fit (former active military) husband if he would be happier if I could climb mountains and repel and that sort of stuff. He replied: "why would I be happier, I don't want to climb mountains either."
  15. My husband would have liked to. It was our first day of geocaching when he proposed in the middle of looking for a cache. Since we had just started he wasn't sure how to put the ring in a cache or make up his own cache. This cache was a site of aa different proposal: cache page I would think it could be done, just give your sweetheart the coords early or someone will get a nice FTF prize!
  16. wow, thats cool, I didn't know about that site! guess I need to go to the links page now and then! Thanks! I have been pondering TPTB for a LONG TIME... I won't admit the other one I can't figure out.
  17. I dress up in my nija suit, head to the ftf as soon as it comes in to my pager, then hide in the bushes and trip the other cachers as they come looking for it... Ok, Ok, so I don't have a nija suit or a pager and I hate the bushes. We have a few FTF, two we tried, the other two we got lucky. I am content. If we never get there first again, its ok. If its close and and we are sitting around looking for a reason to go cachin... the whole FTF thing comes in handy. I don't have resentment for the FTF lovers around here. They are good people, active, and one of them is the main supplier of caches in the area so he can't ftf his own!
  18. I have heard that there is a cache on the bottom of the ocean. One of our cacher friends read it in "geocaching for dummies". I was wondering how you would sign the log but today I saw waterproof paper. That must be the answer.
  19. Every cemetery.. park, wooded area, lightpole alll become suspect.. can't drive by without thinking.. if there isn't one there.... there could be... You know you have hit rock bottom when the weeds in your garden are taller than your veggies because you would rather be geocaching..
  20. I love themed caches, makes it a little more exciting for me. I have done a few, one was only Mountain Dew green colored trades, one was angels only and of course there are sport themes and such. I would suspect that some people will not care and either not trade at all or trade the wrong stuff but that seems to happen with all caches. One of our caches has only items that start with the letter M. Someone left a "mustard" colored jeep. I loved the creativity. I have not gone to the cache to verify that it is indeed "mustard" but I will take the cachers word for it!
  21. I would others use mine if they wanted as long as they asked! I am sure that most people would be flattered.
  22. Nice pics Kit, I love the flower and your little girl is adorable!
