  1. Update: This unit has been sold and is currently enroute to its new owner. Thanks everyone for looking. Onit
  2. Okay, here the pictures. All taken tonight. Blocked out my personal coordinates from the satellite pic.
  3. Why I am selling: The gps unit has been sitting on my bookshelf for the better part of a year so it's time to face reality and give it up and move on to something else. Hopefully someone will give it a good home and take it out and use it as it was meant to be used. Working on the pictures right now.
  4. For Sale - Garmin GPSmap 76CSx Includes: 1. One GPSmap 76CSx (including memory card it came with) - excellent condition, no scratches. 2. Instruction booklet and quickstart guide. 3. Garmin USB cable. 4. City Select North America v7 DVD with unlock code. 5. City Navigator North America v8 DVD with unlock code (2nd unlock code available from Garmin) 6. Trip & Waypoint Manager CD (came with the unit) 7. Protective black neoprene case with clear see thru access to screen and buttons. I have only used it for geocaching. I have found only 13 caches with it. The unit has not been used very often and is in immaculate condition. I called Garmin and they say they will honor unlocking a 2nd gps unit with above CNNA v8. Asking $350 plus shipping in the continental U.S. Pictures will follow later when I get back from work.
  5. Just thought I'd add my story here. Been out of geocaching for a bit, but last year I bought a 76csx unit and after a month of waiting, bought the City Select v7 in June 2007 since City Navigator v8 was forever coming out. Anyway, long story short. I received the City Navigator v8 last year as part of the free update since was within the grace period but never installed/unlocked it. A few days ago my friend told me about the new unlock rules. So I took out my CN8 and tried to unlocked it when it said I needed to pay $75 to update. I called Garmin and they took down my serial number of my unit (see it pays to register) and agreed I was entitled to the upgrade from last year and sent me the 25 digit unlock code. So a happy ending story here.
  6. If she makes a fuss, you can tell her "I figured if I give up chips and ice cream (or whatever your extra luxery snacks or expeditures are) for the next year, then it will even out." and then of course, apologize for not checking with her first since you guys are a team.
  7. check here cnv8 Finally! Garmin shows release date to be April 5 and shipping date to be July 26 so that means they keep their word to everybody and everybody is entitled to the free update within these period! I'm impressed, Garmin.
  8. Got my rebate today too. Sent mine in 6/6. It's one of those postcard size rebates. Not in an envelope or anything so check your mail carefully. Alrighty.
  9. It took 2+ weeks or so after I mailed mine in before I received confirmation email. And after you receive the email, wait 1-2 days for it to show up on the rebate website.
  10. Ditto that. Thanks guys. Appreciate the help - all the way from the other side of the pond (Denmark) and on this side of the pond too (Wisconsin).
  11. Okay, just visited Garmin's website and there's been some update done on their maps update list. I noticed as of this posting that they've removed City Navigator North America completely from the list and updated some other releases. There are some 2006 releases and shipping dates that were not there before. For example City Navigator Australia was released June 12, 2006 but won't be shipped until August 15, 2006. City Navigator North America must be work in progress I guess or maybe it'll pop up by the time I finish typing...
  12. This is confusing to say the least. Sounds to me like the left hand of Garmin doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I just called Garmin. After 45 minutes of wait, got this Garmin fellow who said that City Navigator v8 was released only on preloaded units like Street Pilot, etc.. When I asked him if I could purchase a copy from them, he put me on hold and came back and said that it had not been released on dvd format yet and that they didn't have any for sale, but real soon. When I asked him what real soon meant, he said he didn't really know, could be as late as August. When I asked him if I purchased a copy of version 7 in May could I get a free unlock for version 8, he said doubtful. He said when they get the dvd copies, they will also receive a schedule list with cutoff dates which will tell them when people will be entitled to free upgrades, discounted upgrades, etc.. I am happy to read that someone on the forum was lucky to receive an actual copy of v8, unlocked and loaded. Like I said, sounds like the right hand of Garmin doesn't know what the left hand is doing...
  13. Wow, sounds like you guys may be the first ones on your block with CNNA v8. According to Garmin, release date is the date they release the data to the manufacturer for replication and the shipping date is the date they ship the disks out to their customers. Maybe Garmin's website hasn't caught up with all their activity yet. Keep us posted.
  14. After you've updated your firmware to 2.90, try this: 1. Connect your gps unit to your pc by USB cable, then power on the unit and select menu-menu/Setup/Interface/USB Mass Storage/Enter on the gps unit. 2. On your PC, left mouse click or open My Computer and rt mouse click on the drive that represents your unit (on my computer, gps unit shows up as Removeable Disk (F)) select Properties - a window should pop up telling you how much memory on your micro sd card. Mine says 125,845,504 bytes free space and 16,384 bytes used space. I have no idea what it's using the the 16KB for since I don't have a map yet. oh yeah, I have a 76CSx unit BUT in principle it should still work for your 60CSx unit.
  15. Yep, ditto that, following your instructions, my 76CSx has a "Reposition Here" option at the bottom of the menu list with "Average Location" at the top. Have to scroll down to see it.
  16. Newbie here, what exactly is the tunnel problem? I have a tunnel nearby but no car but tunnel has a pedestrian walk way built in if one doesn't mind walking through a noisy echoey windy tunnel.
  17. What Yucca Patrol said, AND the ability to take a snapshot of our GPSr screen while in the field, save it to our micro sd card and then down load it to the pc when we get home so we can show folks what we're talking about or see out there. Someone suggested it could be as simple as pressing a combo of buttons. Oh, and keep up the good work!
  18. * Thanks! * dcnylund - make sure your waas is "Enabled" --> menu/menu/setup/enter/system/enter
  19. On that link to City Navigator version 8 above, I noticed the photo of the dvd still displays a CN version 7 dvd. Also, when you click on the map viewer for version 8, it takes you to City Navigator version 7 for which the copyright dates are 2004 for Navteq and 2005 for Garmin (same dates for version 7). I think somebody took the existing product page for City Navigator version 7 and replaced the "8" with "7" where they could and left the rest of the original wording as is -- somebody not familiar with the product, just following orders to make above changes. They also still say nearly 6 million poi (version 6 said over 5 million poi) same as version 7, but who knows, doesn't necessarily mean the POI's have to grow. Anyway, that's how it looks to me. I could be wrong. I am happy that Garmin has elected to post a version 8 on their website and we recorded it here.
  20. Well, the signal does seem to be stronger indoors as well. I wish now that I had turned on the unit and tested what satellites I was receiving, strength, etc., jotted them down and THEN updated to 2.6 and check if the signal was indeed stronger and/or more satellite after the upgrade. Maybe someone who hasn't updated yet can take the time to do that and report their direct immediate before and after upgrade results. I'll know better next time.
  21. See, the squeeky wheel gets oiled and the nail sticking up gets hammered. Thanks for posting the update Adventurous Hounds (AH), and for trying it out 2nd after AH and confirming Timpat.
  22. Well, the tricky word here is "eligible" which by definition is having the quality or condition required. One of the main conditions of receiving a free upgrade to CN8 is having the immediate prior version, i.e., version 7. You can still upgrade if you have unlocked an earlier version such as version 5 or 6, but you won't be "eligible" for a free upgrade. Another condition which must be met is having unlocked that version 7 within a specified period of time. Note also there are other terms one should be clear about when corresponding with Garmin: update and unlock. Garmin says on their website that the update disks are free (if there is one available for your current map and if you are in certain location otherwise shipping charges may apply), that the cost if any applies to unlocking the update. So update disks are free. Cost applies to unlocking the disk. You may be eligible to receive a free update disk but you may or may not be eligible to unlock it for free. There seems to be a bunch of things clear as mud about the free unlock: - on Garmin website, in one place it says you must have purchased the version on or after the release date of the update for that version. - on Garmin website, when you click on details, it says you must have unlocked the version on or after the release date of the update for that version. - in Garmin emails recd by some folks Garmin say you must have purchased/unlocked the version within 30 days of the release date of the update, otherwise call them and they may get you a free update or discount depending on the date you got it/unlocked it. - and folks are also receiving Garmin cartography email saying if you buy CS 7 or CN 7 now you will automatically be eligible for free upgrade/update. So does that mean free unlock too? So the free unlock questions are: 1. is it based on purchase date or unlocking date of the original version. 2. is it based on purchase/unlocking on or after the release date of the update or 3. is it based on purchase/unlocking within 30 days of the release date or 4. is it based on buying CN7 or CS7 now or 5. is it based on all of the above, in other words, they all count. I wish some one from Garmin would read this and just clarify once and for all so everybody is on the same page about this.
  23. Counting the spaces, I get 30 characters max too. Thanks for info about custom POI.
  24. I entered a waypoint on my gps 76CSx unit. In the notes section I was typing in the hints and then the unit wouldn't let me input anymore characters. It seems to wraparound if the last word on a line is big. Can you guys please check how many characters or lines of text your unit allows you to enter in the Note box/field of the waypoint and let me know if yours limits your input too. It looks like there's room to enter 3 lines of text in the Note field but I can't input anymore than 1 and half lines at most. Thanks.
