  1. It will always be a right angled triangle, as height is always perpendicular to distance over ground.
  2. I've been using my Mio a701 now for 14 months for phone calls, PDA functions, caching and it's been brilliant. It has a few 'quirks' as does any device of this nature but if you know how to use a PPC properly, then you will overcome any problems. For caching on mine I use Memory Map, Cachemate, Tomtom & Pocket Navigator 6 (for Cyprus). We have a very popular user's forum here.. www.miousers.co.uk
  3. The best way to use most devices I've found is to get to roughly where the cache is and stand still. Observe the distance to go for a few secs, then move and stand still again. Do this a few times and you will get to within 5m of it every time. No need for the pointer when you're moving slowly then.
  4. If you use a 6 fig grid ref like TL 123 678, then that puts you at the bottom left corner of a 100m x 100m square so your location can be anywhere within that square. So, TL 1234 6789 is a 10m x 10m square inside that one and TL 12345 67890 is a 1m x 1m square inside that. So in your example, if you are out by one digit with the 5 or 0, then you are 1m off. If you are out by 1 digit with the 3 or the 8, then you would be 100m off. Hope that makes sense, but I doubt it.
  5. The 24th is indeed Psi, but the DING goes to Eckington then as requested.
  6. Also one of the quickest cars round a housing estate as Joyriders of the 90s proved many a time! Next question then, sort of related. Delta is a letter of the current Greek alphabet, what are the rest of them?
  7. If I remember rightly, you need the "European V5" to calibrate your own maps. If you have the OS edition, it won't let you do it.
  8. I would ask for help in the other thread if I were you otherwise this one will become a duplicate thread.
  9. Most, if not all, of the units that use 4xAA battery or a 9v battery, use a 7805 linear regulator, which is a pretty inefficient way of getting 5v (65% at best). The mintyboost I mentioned above uses 2xAA with a 'boost regulator' and is around 85% efficient. For info if you're interested in the maths of it all... http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/process.html
  10. I used onspeed when I was on 28k dialup and to be honest it's the only thing that kept me sane. To get the most out of it, set it compress images to the max. Then if you need to see one at proper resolution, you can just right click it. Made a hell of a difference for me.
  11. If anyone comes out to Cyprus for their hols, there is a 'Mintyboost' still in one of my caches (GC10R4Y). If you want to buy one yourself though, try here.. http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/
  12. I just use my hometown, I can usually find my house ok from there.
  13. @ stora, yes I forgot about cachemate/nav - that also can't open the port. You seem to have the idea of what I was trying to say though.
  14. In reply to all, There is only a preference as to which app to open first because Tomtom can't open a virtual port unaided, it's a problem with the Tomtom software at present. Once the 'virtual' port is opened, you can connect as many apps as you want to it, including Tomtom. You can either use MM or any other app that can open it. I don't have a 350 or 550 here at the moment to try it, but whichever port MM can connect to apart from GPS_COM/HW_COM is the one you want. Stick to 4800 baud & NMEA, not SIRF and try to connect MM or another app apart from Tomtom. It's normally COM 2 or 4. When you have it working, keep the app running, minimise it, open Tomtom and connect with the same settings. You can actually automate the whole process with a script runner such as Mortscript, but I really don't want to go into that here.
  15. Quick bit of info for you all here.... The latest generation of Mio devices all use WM5, which does not need GPS gate to share ports. You just need to know how the ports work. GPS_COM (or HW_COM as it's called on some devices) is a hardware port and Tomtom can connect to it directly, you do not however get the benefit of SIF (SIRF instant fix) when using this port. You can also only have one app connected to it. The port "coelophysis" has MM connected to is a "software" port and can have multiple apps connected. The main problem is that current versions of Tomtom cannot open this port on it's own. If you open the port by running MM or similar, then Tomtom will connect to this port also. Hope this clears things up a bit, although probably not the best explanation!
  16. Brodit mounts usually have room at the back for a high capacity battery, an a701 with the 3000mAh battery still fits in them nicely. Maybe it's the same for the 350 & 550?
  17. I use one of these: http://shop.eten.hu/mugen-power-a701-batte...mp;currency=EUR bit more expensive, but a much neater solution than an external affair. Be careful of some of the "3000mAh" batteries on Ebay. If a battery is the same physical size as the standard one, then it's unlikely to be 3000mAh.
  18. Have you been converted now then?
  19. I personally don't bother inputting anything into Cachemate in the field, I just write in the cache log, then take a digi pic of what I've written so I can recall it to log online when I get home. It saves a lot of time messing around in my opinion.
  20. Public rights of way are red on 1:50k landranger maps & green on 1:25k explorer maps.
  21. How long are you waiting? They don't arrive instantly. You will go into a queue and get it emailed when it's your turn, if you make one now for today, generally it should arrive in the next 2-3hrs in my experience.
  22. You should have a leading slash on the link. Try editing the one above to \cmate:TRM788 in the waypoint properties and see if it works.
  23. Why not just order one online from a reputable source, then if you don't like it, you can send it back within 7 days for a full refund. I'm sure that won't be the case though. Read the forums linked in my sig if you haven't already. The A700 is identical inside, but it's ugly beast on the outside. They are pretty good with eletronics in Asia, but their cosmetic design bloke wants a slap.
