You can create a complete backup of your device with SPB backup or similar. You can then flash the ROM & install whatever app you want to use to try the GPS. If it's no different, then reflash your device with the original ROM and restore the backup. Like I said, 20 mins tops. I would have thought that if you had already spent "a LOT of time on this", then an extra 20 mins to rule out the ROM wouldn't matter that much. It's up to you. I just wanted you to know that the GPS works fine, with good fix & reception & without static nav issues on my identical (apart from ROM & software config) device, so it can't be a hardware issue unless you have 2 units with the same fault.

Maybe it's a problem introduced by O2's branded ROM? I assume you've tried different ROMs? Mine has a Windows 6.1 ROM on it if that's any help to you? I have tested it throughly and I can assure you that the registry fix I posted absolutely makes the difference. The GPS on mine is very good, it will keep a fix even in the car glovebox. I tested this because my Mio a701 would do it and I wanted to see if the Qualcomm chipset was as good as the Sirf III on the Mio. The hardware is the same on all of these, so the only difference can be the ROMs or the software we are using.

It will do, but it won't keep updating when you stand still or walk very slowly. Try placing a cache with it and getting accurate coords.

Sirftech can't turn off the Static Nav because it's not a Sirf chipset, it's a Qualcomm. Anyway, have a read through this thread. Pretty much yeah. I use PQs and cachemate though, rather than mess around opening web pages. There is a mobile version of GC.com if you need quick low bandwidth access. http://wap.geocaching.com/

It's more than likely Activesync still running in the background. Close it properly (from running programs) and see if it still happens.

Assuming you have Memory Map. Get a google image of the area as big as possible on your screen. Press 'print screen', open your favourite image editing software and paste it in. Save it as a .tiff file, then open it in MM. Calibrate it by choosing 3 points and copying the lat/long info across from GE. Just add a placemark and zoom right in on GE to get an accurate position. For memory map, just create a blank map for anywhere you don't have one. I just get a google earth image & use that if i can't find a map for somewhere. For the smartphone, see my sig.

All that's needed is a ruggedised PPC with an integrated GPS that costs less than the trimble units. Something will come along soon. Until then, I will stick to my Kaiser and make sure I don't drop it.

Can I just go back a step here. If you are using a word such as Semordnilap in a quiz such as this, then it must be in 'common usage' RIGHT? If that's the case, surely SEMORDNILAP/PALINDROMES would be the longest?

In my opinion, the bost solution for geocaching and the criteria stated bt the OP is a Mio p550, which is what I would go for if I didn't want mine to be a phone as well.

Yes the garmin does paperless caching, just as a zx81 does computing. The 'disposable income' you mentioned is irrelevant in this thread, please read the title of the topic. The only downside of them is that at the moment you can't disable static nav with the Qualcomm chipset, hopefully a driver release will fix this soon though.

The link works for me, I just tried it. Anyway, you can get them from Orange or O2 as an upgrade. O2 call it the Vario III, Orange call it the TYTN II. The correct HTC name for it is the Kaiser, but they're all the same device. There are loads of them on Ebay and you will get an new & unlocked one for around £275. I also used to have Garmin units, but have sold them both as I found I don't use them anymore. If you buy an aquapac mini to put the device in it is 100% waterproof and will survive a fall a lot more readily. Batteries have never been an issue for me. I charge it in the car between caches and only put the screen on when I need to look at it. Never even been close to running out yet.

Why not just install Memory Map on the PPC and don't bother with the Garmin? Either get a PPC with a built in GPS, such as a Mio p350/550 a701, or my HTC Kaiser/TYTN II or get an even cheaper PPC with Bluetooth and get a GPS mouse. The Garmin unit that you have all recommended so far does not do half the things the OP asked for. Does it play mp3s? Connect to a PC wirelessly? Does it do turn by turn satnav (may do I'm not sure)? Can you get full cache info from it like you can with Cachemate? Do you get a display like this below? On which when you select a cache you get this: In addition to the things the OP asked for, he would also be able o send & recieve email, make phone calls, send SMS, have full HTML internet access via 3g, Edge, HSDPA, GPRS or wifi, play games, edit MS Office documents, sync his outlook calender & contacts and install whatever different apps or games he chooses.
