  1. Did the ET highway last year (1500 caches) this year we came back to finish the expanded 2000 off. Our best day last year and this was with 6 people was 856 caches. We started on the route at about 8:30am and didn't stop for lunch and kept going until about 7:00pm for a sit down dinner, then got back on the trail and went until something like 2:00am. We went pretty hard most of the day, with only short breaks to change drivers, fill up the gas tank, or to get out a stretch for a few seconds. We used the cache replacement method and had a very good system set up, some of the faster jumpers averaged a cache every 40 seconds or slight less. These guys, myself included would run to each and every cache. Leap Frogging isn't geocaching IMO, driving past a cache and claiming a find isn't what it's all about. A person should have some interaction with the cache to make the find, looking for it, grabbing it, signing the log book, rehiding it, driving to it etc... That said, I am not sure if 1500 caches in a single day is possible without leap froging, replacing caches as well as some other tricks. Some cachers up here if they are caching late into the night after midnight still count it as the first day. Another problem would be finding the caches after the sun has gone down, adds extra seconds per cache.
  2. Was on a trip recently and picked up a few TB and a geocoin, tuck them away in my camera bag and since I was going out of country I couldn't log at the time them with out paying huge roaming fees. I got home took them out of my camera bag to log them and now for the life of me I can't find them. Had a look in the logical places all over the house as well as at work. No luck. I'm hoping that they are just tucked away somewhere or got shuffled off into a corner and they will turn up but I have no clue as where they could be. Needless to say I feel horrible. What should I do in this situation? Part of the problem is I don't remember exactly which TB I picked up along the way. If I could remeber which ones I did pick up I would be more than happy to replace the trackable with a geocoin from my limited collection.
  3. Yeah, having a base map would be great. How do you upload them to the GPS unit? Sorry for the noobie question?
  4. Hi, I recently upgraded from a Garmin 60CSX to a Garmin 62ST, a co-worker of mine would like to buy my old 60CSX from me. I was wondering what a good price would be? GPS is in good condition few scuff marks, but looks probably 70%. The base maps have somehow been erased however and I'm not sure how difficult it would be to get them back on there. Any idea what a fair price would be? I don't want to over charge him. Thanks!
  5. I was out at my uncle resort and he asked me to walk some of the hiking trails so that he could get an accurate distance of how long each trail is. At certain spots along the trail I marked a waypoint. I have the distance data he was looking for, but he would also like to be able to download the track I made to something like Google earth so that he can use it as hand out to people wanting to hike/ski the trail. Can someone walk me through how I might do this? Thanks!
  6. Dang. I will look to GSAK to see if they can help me. Definetly don't want to have to do it by hand. but I guess I will if I have to.
  7. A week and a half ago I got back from the ET Highway. With GSAK 8 you are able to log all your caches at once. A week ago I asked about this in this topic, http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=287095&st=0&p=4921305&fromsearch=1entry4921305 I also got a buddy to show me how to do and I thought I had the process down, but when I uploaded a few hundred caches to GSAK and followed the steps I found that some of the caches when you go into Golbal Replace and change it to 'found by me date' didn't actually change the date, log it as found or have the cache log. So whatever I spent 20 minutes and changed them by hand. When I published them, these caches in this set. My log was for each cache was published 4 times -Other than being an eye sore, on each cache's page will that affect my numbers? Meaning will I get 4x smilies for each single cache? -Is there anyway to change this, so that each cache has only one log? Other than going through xxx logs and deleting them all by hand, which would take hours? -Any idea what I may have done wrong? I still have a few hundred more to do.
  8. This past weekend finished the ET highway with a bunch of people and now want to log my caches. Instead of logging them one at a time, I understand with GSAK 8 you can log mass caches all at once. Can someone please take me through the steps of doing that? Thanks so much!
  9. For the 60CSX I can't view hints or cache description. I normally have my Nuvi 550 to get me close to GZ and to view hints, etc.. then use the 60CSX to get me the rest of the way
  10. Am I able to load POI to load geocaches using Gsak?
  11. Couple years ago I bought a Garmin 60CSX, Over the last little while however when I tried to down load caches it would have a error message come up that says "Waypoint memory full". The memory card that came with the GPS I guess just couldn't handle the 500 caches I wanted to download. Before trying to download these caches however I deleted the old waypoints. The only thing that I still had on there were my regular waypoints (maybe 75 or so). Anyway, I thought I'll just buy a new memory card. Went into Staples and showed the clerk what kind of memory card I needed and he gave me an 8G card which I was told would be huge and a lot better than my current one. Changed the memory card and turned on the GPS to find all my waypoints are still loaded on the GPS. ????? Maybe I'm wrong but shouldn't all my old waypoints be saved to my old memory card???? Tried downloading 900 caches with Gsak and it maybe got 75% before the "Waypoint memory full" error message popped up again. Anyone have any clue why this is happening?
  12. Going on a big caching trip in a month or so and would like to download a one or two thousand caches into my Garmin 60CSX. I'm looking for a data card that can store all these caches. The card that came with the GPS just doesn't have the room on it anymore. Any idea where can I pick up a data card? Thanks!
  13. Logging Etiquette: Geocache hiders sometimes go through a great deal of planning to place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the hide, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required. Single word, acronym, or emoticon logs may be easier when you have a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log. Here is a little blurb our provinical caching group came up to be included in the description of the caches that get a lot of "TFTC" or
  14. NOOOOO! Even with a free trial I would venture to guess that most dedicated cachers in their first year didn't go out and find that many caches. We simply weren't hooked yet. As time went on we geocached more and more. making it a pay only thing, takes away one of the best things about caching, it's cheap, simple, fun and great for families.
  15. I got 33 caches last summer, these caches were all found in a provinical park, so very few of them were park and grabs. 12 hours of straight geocaching.
  16. Not sure, I just went on GC.com and downloaded each of the caches I wanted one by one then a few more through a pocket query and downloaded them via Gsak.
  17. Recently got the Garmin 550 that I use for driving as well as storing geocaches. A few weeks ago I down loaded a couple hundred geocaches for the city I live close to. Yesterday I downloaded about a dozen more in an area I want to cache. Went back and looked for the city caches and everyone of them had been deleted. Did I run out of memory or something, maybe some other reason?????
  18. I was wondering how it might be possible to search for specific GC letter/number codes? I am playing geocaching game this year where I need certain letter and number combinations such as a geocache with the N and 7, H and 4, M and 9 in the GC code. Thanks!
  19. Hey, Just started using GSAK with my Garmin 60CSx which has been just awesome. I got a Nuvi 550 for Christmas and would also like to down load caches to this device but don't want the limitation that the 60CSZ has for space etc.. What I plan to do is use the Nuvi to drive me to the cache then use the 60CSx to go the last little ways to the cache. If I can find it I would like to referecne the Nuvi for hints, past logs, etc.. What I am asking is, when down loading the caches to the Nuvi using GSAK. What do I need to change in order to download everything from that cache listing on GC.com?
  20. Hey, I got a Garmin Nuvi 550 for Christmas this year and really enjoy the little I have used it. The problem I am having is the suction cup just does not stick. It sticks for awhile, then for whatever reason it lets go and the GPSr comes crashing to the floor! I've got to the point where I don't even put it up for fear of it dropping and the GPSr breaking and it's kind of pointless having a car GPS that you can't really look at while driving. Any ideas on what I could do? crazy glue it to the window? Maybe another option?
  21. One other thing I would like to add, is when I am looking for a cache depending on the location I look regardless of muggles. A person trying not to look suspicious is more noticable than a person doing their own thing. I don't know if that makes any sense, but just try to blend in, in plain sight.
  22. With the right maps, the 60CSx is actually quite good in the car, though the screen is quite small. But I used mine to navigate with for quite a few years before I broke down and bought a couple of Nuvis for the voice/phone integration. True, but I really need something that is a little more accurate while driving. Being a country person going to large cities like Toronto makes me nervous while driving. So having a car GPS gives me peace of mind and helps me get around. Normally I rent the car GPS units from the car rental places. But they are about $10 a day, and it makes more sense just to buy one out right.
  23. Hi fellow cachers, I do a bit of travelling and am interested in picking up a GPS unit for the car to help navigate streets in cities I'm unfamiliar with. It would need to have maps for Canada, and if possible the US. Since I'm also a geocacher, it would be great if I could use this unit for caching also. I already have a Garmin 60csx and I'm quite happy with it, but it does no good for on the road. I would however like to stick with the Garmin name. I had a look at the Garmin website and I'm overwhelmed by the choices! Any suggestions?
  24. I was wondering if anyone knew of an easy way to upload caches into a GPS unit. I live in a small town north of a larger city and do travel into the city quite a bit and when I get a chance while in the city like to pick up a few caches. However I don't want to sit in front of the computer and try and figure out which route I'm going to use and then spend an hour one by one downloading each cache from just that route. Is there a quicker way to down load all the caches along a specific route? I am a premium member of GC.com and I hear that there is an application that does this but don't really know how to do it. Thanks!
  25. I've released 4 coins and 2 or three of them have gone missing. Recently we had a contest where we we each bought a coin and placed them in a brand new cache. The idea was after a year to see which coin moved the farthest. There must have been about 15 - 20 geocoins in the cache, and a day after the cache was placed the entire cache was muggled. I mean the coins have been activated, why would anyone want 20 of the same geocoin?
