  1. cacherunner, the newest Tim Hortons has opened in our neck of the woods, so I volunteer to bring by some timbits. Will t-up with you on Friday night as per time and location to make the drop? Or email me if that is easier, c/o eroyd if on saturday. cachewidow It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  2. supergenius, you don't say how old are the kids. Langford lake has a fishing float and a nice boardwalk/trail system, but the swimming is hit and miss. Thetis lake has a great swimming beach (no lifeguards this year), and lots of trails all around to various swimming/fishing spots. If you have a canoe or rowboat its even better. $2.00 parking fee, bring your loonies or toonie or they will tow you. These are both easily accessible. Matheson lake is a little farther out but again a nice swim/hike area. Maybe we will see you at club babalo friday night? It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.

  4. As has been said, if three men with all that experience can have a bad hike, then anyone can. Everyone on the wet coast has a personal story or knows of someone who met with tragic circumstances whilst in the woods, I am glad this one came out with just a little embarrassment and no lasting effects. For my personal opinion, I think the report was more accurate than some would let on. It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  5. When my sister's dog had a run-in with some nasty steel grating, all four of his paws were messed up. Had to let him outside at least a few times a day & they lived on the wet coast, so what to do? This was several years ago before the big "pet accessory bonanza" so they went to their local drug store & came away with some extra large trojans (ribbed for traction of course). They worked great. Had some funny looks from visitors noticing the well-used rubbers drying on the kitchen counter after a romp in the yard though. 6. They have also developed a taste for gore-tex around the small kayaker-frequented islands around the north island area. Just the sound of the hulls scraping up on the beach brings them running. It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.

    I'm baaaaak!!!!

Happy to know you are safe & sound (?) It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  8. Lots of people doing the easier caches have their small kids with them, so toys, even McD's are great to find & trade. Also, usually due to the above mentioned kids, there isn't a lot of cash around for buying "good" trade items. Nothing wrong with putting better things in caches requiring more work to find. 9. Maybe this is a sign they should be giving all their expensive loot to the outfits who truly could use them, like the Fire Dept, and not just a bunch of people playing a game. Same with the dough - I can think of several organizations doing incredible work helping people build better lives and which are always in danger of losing their public funding. I repeat what I have said before - cachers in general do not need the toys and money. My opinion. Cachewidow It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  10. eroyd keeps telling me it means big furry loafers. Ours mainly is a convenient lump for finding your big toe in the dark. Maybe it would find a better home at a fire dept. It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  11. Okay - you may want to narrow it down just a little more. There are a few dozen cachers in the Victoria area and several more around Courtenay/Comox. Are the kids camping out? Day hikes? Couple hours? It may be tight to schedule something this time, but several of us are planning to get together at Newcastle Island for Labour Day weekend, might be a possibility. What do the rest of you think - time to give the BFL obsession a break? cachewidow It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  12. A local cacher found a body in a regional park. Other hikers coming by had a cell phone & phoned the cops. With the cachers gps they zeroed right in to the spot. This area is frequented by families, joggers, dog walkers & the like, glad someone who could keep their cool found the man and not some little kids. Can't remember the outcome, just foul play not suspected. It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  13. Great evening to sit around and drink with a bunch of other cachers. Thanks for the invite, we'll be there again cachewidow It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  14. I am a buyer for a map retailer. My supplier has confirmed the tyvek maps are no longer in print. He has arranged a special print run of his top titles (western Canada) which will be available later this spring. The map office is planning to release their cartographic info on the net similar to the US system, so there is doubt they will even continue to print paper maps (which are increasing to $11.45 retail April 1). MemoryMap navigator and E-Topo software enable you to print your own maps, mosaicked from 1:50,000 topos, and are downloadable to GPS or PDA. I don't want to violate the non-commercial use rule here, so if anyone is interested in pricing/products they can email me. cachewidow It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.

  16. If Curious George had a particular proposed cache in mind in starting this thread, and if it is the one I had the honour to read about in a private email, then I think he should re-read the admin's reasons for not approving it. The proposed cache just did not meet the spirit of geocaching.com, and was inappropriate to approve on this site. The cachers concerned maybe should consider taking some of their seemingly limitless resources and starting their own website, as they seem to find geocaching.com to be too limiting to their ideas. 17. I placed a virtual because the location is one that even many locals know nothing of, and it in no way could support a physical cache. I agree points that would be considered 'common knowledge' like Old Faithful should not be created as virtual caches, but there are many more candidates, and they are not all that much to maintain, by admin or myself. cachewidow It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  18. The south island community is extremely active at all levels of play! If you want to search by postal code, one downtown code is v8v-3k3. It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  19. As soon as you introduce money/prizes etc other than the original trade items, things go downhill fast. Greed does bad things to even the most unassuming folks. It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  20. Mine is fairly self-explanatory - if you know that my husband is eroyd who has over 200 finds in a little over one year. I started with grasswidow and made it a bit better. It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  21. I too think this is personal preference. I have logged not found when I was with my husband who made the find because I was p****d he found it first. I have gotten over that though and intend to log a find when we are together, whoever first spots the cache. That said, if you are seeking a cache where you know there will be big goodies involved, and you log as a team, only one object should be traded, not one per team member. Cachewidow It's not difficult to meet demands; just turn around and there they are.
  22. I love to watch locationless caches! They take me to places all over the world in quest of beautiful and unusual things. I am attempting to log some as well, which makes me keep my eyes open to my surroundings, even if I have passed by them every day of the year. Please keep them, segregated if necessary. Thanks, cachewidow
  23. Sorry - got off-topic. I regret we do not have cable in our house, so we missed this feature, but it sounds great.
  24. And be thankful there is no big money on the line, as one team here on the West Coast started doing. Granted it made the chase more exciting for a couple of months because of the mental gymnastics required to solve these puzzles, but it also turned ugly when the greed factor kicked in. Throughout the last 5 months or so, very little traditional caching has gone on in favour of the big prizes, and not one cacher finding these prizes has traded an item of like value. Let's face it, would you carry something worth hundreds of dollars to replace the money you took? Assuming you were the first finder, and the money was all still there. Yes, it's true. They have now suspended operations, and I can say I am glad because it really made for a bad situation amongst people who were formerly friendly. Cachewidow
  25. our condolences to the families of the fallen, and their comrades and crew on the ground. cachewidow, v-royd & c-royd
