  3. i use a Mac as well as the Garmin 60csx, and the best program i came across is MacCaching. it uses the GpsBabel format .. i simply download the LOC files to my desktop and then transfer them to my GPSr also APPLE just announced the IPHONE which will be available in July, that uses OSX as a base software and allows real time internet surfing so you can go to Geocaching.com and read the cache description in the palm of your hand
  4. you should "write a note" and everything should be cool. i revisited a cache that i once found alone and when i went back to it i brought my daughter, i pretended to not know anything so she could find it herself ( of course i gave her hints and pointed her in the right direction!!) but i told her the GPS was telling me where the cache is !! shes 5 years old so she bought it !!! anyway my daughter took an item and replaced it with another, i did not sign the log since i had already signed it the first time i found the cache.. but i did write a note stating what my kid took and replenished and why i didnt sign the log !!
  5. hi guys, and welcome to geocaching
  6. how do you sign up to get daily notification of new caches?? i get the weekly notification, but when a new cache is placed i never get the opportunity to be FTF because i dont know about it !!! i find out about it the following week !!!
  7. you can find alot of awesome goodies to put in your cache at the local dollar store !! and hey things are only a dollar !!!!
  8. You didn't indicate what kind of System you are using.....PDA/BT GPS..... Garmin.....etc.. a lot depends on the capabilities of what you have... The most recent images of my house are from 1986.....don't even show the Wal-Mart just down the road that they're already talking about replacing.... And most of the TOPO maps are even older. (But I still LOVE EM') the gps im using is the garmin 60csx but what im talking about is internet maps or i havent looked at maps that might be available for purchase yet!. as stated ive been using just the mapquest links which give you a good general idea of the area but nothing with arieal or sat. photos
  9. anyone know how to activate the travel bug? it comes with the TB number stamped on it but no activation code i thought they might have come pre activated but when i did a search on theTB number thats stamped on it , it showed it being registered to someone in another state. has this happened to anyone else? what should i do??
  10. does anyone know of any good maps to use? im currently using the mapquest links on the cache details page. ive tried using cachfever and googles new earth map and although they provide an aerial photo ( google provides 3-d rotation) they are both extreamly outdated !! for example i have lived in my house coming up on 5 years now and both google and cachfever show my house in the construction stage !! does anyone know of any current maps available??
  11. im having the same problem. i tried to activate my u4d travel bug and i dont have an activation code after reading this thead.. i checked to see if they came pre-activated, so i punched in my TB number and it brought me to someone elses travel bug in NYC... and i live in florida go figure...

  13. i think thats the perfect way to place a cache,, this way you can get a feel of the muggle activity around.. you dont just anyone stumbling onto your cache..
  14. i wouldnt pay a dime... and would post my gps on ebay.. if paying for caches was the only option it would be like another monthly bill but just to have fun..and we all know how we hate to pay those already.. but it is an interesting topic... and who knows.. you might be right anything could happen!!!!
  15. night caching can be fun,, but when caching in trails or area's that are off the beaten path..like in the woods somewhere... scare the crap out of me ..i guess ive watch too many movies !!! but never the less i still pursue them but carrying a firearm keeps me at a little
  16. you should report this person to geocaching.com, under the contact us link.. give them as much info as you can about this person includig the screen name if possible and they will be able to locate all the caches placed by him.. if they are too close to each other ( with in 528 feet) of another cache it will be disabled or archived due to cache saturation.. they cannot be within 528 feet of another cache but i dont know why the moderater did not catch this.. im in the process of placing my first cache and they had me get permits from the park that i placed it in ..
  17. who care's !!! as long as you and your kid have fun finding the cache thats all that really matters.. the fact that both of you log the find is perfectly fine since you were acting as a team... thier is no "i" in team.. the whole point of geocaching is to get out thier with your family or friends and have a good time trying to find the cache as opposed to sitting at home watching t.v.
  18. rules vary from state to state, but normally the fish and wildlife commission will have the final say.. they do allow caches in the parks, but have strict guidelines and require permits..
  19. garmin has plenty of models to choose from but, they tend to lean toward one application .. for example, driving or hiking or marine use..etc.. if you just want to auto navigation with door to door directions the garmin street pilot 2720 and the NuVI models are excellent !! but if you want to incorporate both auto navigation with features for camping, hiking and geocaching along with a large memory i recommend the garmin gps 60 csx model... youll have to purchase the additional software for auto navigation( it comes in a micro sd card for this model) but once you do then you can use it for all the applications you specified.. check out thier web site at www.garmin.com
  20. i dont think thats cheating !! the whole point of geocaching is to use your gps and get out thier and try to navigate to the coordinats, once your within the 50 foot mark it should just be all visual and if you have an extra advantage like the metal detector why not use it.. the gps and your skill of navigation got you 98% of the way thier, you just used the metal detector for the final find.. now the metal detector might not always work, especially with all the micro's that are made of plastic !! like the 35mm film containers...
  21. yes i agree with " Prime Suspect" that GC8BA5 is only a identifier. if you go to the geocaching homepage, then hide and seek cach, scroll down to where it says other search options, then where it says by waypoint just enter the identifier and hit go.. it will bring you to the cache page and the lat. and long. coordinates will be the same as those you have entered manually
  22. im sure everyone in this forum would agree that they would love to meet others on the hunt or even after, as would i.. but thier are the select few who just want to be left alone and who dont take kindly toward criticism and might be offended.
  23. thier are plenty of caches in the city to keep you busy for awhile until your ready to explore new teritory
  24. you can use your 60 cx right out of the box !!! especially for geocaching !! it will have limited detailed navigation for driving.. for example it will give you all the major highways and stateroads but it will not tell you the name of the street your on!!! or how to get to a certain address. if you want detailed auto navigation, youll need to purchase the " city navigator" software ( which is pretty good) if you want detailed marine or other fishing info youll need to purchse thier " topo" software other than that your gps is ready to use the minute you throw some batteries into it !!!! the only other software you might have to download is software to transfer waypoints from your pc or mac into the computer.. and if you dont download the software you just have to enter the coordinates manually which is no big deal !!..
  25. for the 60csx i find that the suction cup mount works best!, you can position it anywhere and in any position( vertical or horizontal )
