Handlebar mount?
STREETSEAL & G.I. Jane replied to magking1971's topic in GPS technology and devices
I use the garmin handlebar mount on my Dual Sport motorcycle, I do leave it loose enough to move it for glare. I havent had any problems. I feel the rubber dampens some vibration, but if vibration was an issue I probabaly wouldn't ride the stinkin bike. Just remember it is plastic. Anybody want to try to machine one out of alum? -

How accurate is the trip odometer
STREETSEAL & G.I. Jane replied to dwiener's topic in GPS technology and devices
My Odometer on my vista is witin a tenth of a mile compared to my car's odometer. The track milage will vary depending on the number of "points" that were marked, The more points or closer they are together the more accurate, it's like connect the dots, try drawing a circle with dots, the tighter they are the more like a circle it looks. Same goes with your gps track log. They can usually be set up to record in time, or distance. Driving I set mine for distance, say every 1/4 mile it marks a "point". While hiking I set it for Time, usually about 30 seconds, it'll stamp a point. Most GPSr's will have a max amount of points they will record then start recording over the first set of points. Hope this sheds some light. -
Go with Metroguide, V 4.01 has more detail then V5, R&R isnt as detailed as metroguide, I currently have every Mapsource program, I use Metroguide the most, there is a Canada Metroguide also, I don't know about you but both would be nice, I have mertoguide Italy and have never been there, It's nice to look at a detailed map though. Go with Metroguide, You'll be happy, (except the $$cost!!)

Baby formula and stuff......
STREETSEAL & G.I. Jane replied to richardreynolds's topic in GPS technology and devices
We just got cut off our free formula, so we make our Daughter eat real food. Eat or starve? She eats everything now. Steak & potatoes is her favorite now, She's 1 1/2 now, & can sign on to the web, loves to run around with my Vista, under close watch though. We take her on geo-caches, either in a stroller or backpack. Have Fun -

Why Garmin doesn't use USB.
STREETSEAL & G.I. Jane replied to aka Monkey's topic in GPS technology and devices
I use a garmin usb data card programmer with my GPSmap 176c, It programs map cards quickly, If I leave the data card in the unit which is connected via "cereal" it takes about 2 hours to fill a 32 mb data card. It sucks, I think only a few units use the removable memory, Mostly marine chartplotters, the Streetpilot too. I wish the E-trex series had usb, my vista takes about about 1 hr to fill the memory. I'm impatient, like the rest of us -
I own a 176c, It's great, sucks down AA's though. The screen cannot change orientation. The best deal for a 176c is Westmarine.com, They sell a sea & land package, It comes with metroguide, Bluechart Cd, Beanbag mount, 32 mb data card+ usb programmer. for $899. I use mine in my car & boat, It is great, the B&W screen is easier to view in daylight, I perfer the color. I have used it for caching, Velcro'd it to my babies stroller!! Batteries last 4-6 hrs with the backlight on. It comes with a 12vdc cord, use it! It's a expensive unit but I love it, I can get 75% of california on the 32mb data card. It has alot of useful extra information other units don't offer, Several display pages, & map options. Get one!!! Any questions, I'm a well seasoned 176c owner.

GPS In The Car With A Laptop
STREETSEAL & G.I. Jane replied to rjo's topic in GPS technology and devices
Ever thought of Canada Metroguide from Garmin? Garmin products work well. I have Canada metroguide even though I have never been there. I am a proud owner of just about every Mapsource program out there. I highly recommend metroguide. It's pricy but good. -

West Marine has a website, westmarine.com, no need to find a east marine. Check out the site, they are a garmin dealer too.

Hacking a Rino/Legend/Vista
STREETSEAL & G.I. Jane replied to aka Monkey's topic in GPS technology and devices
I own a Gpsmap176c, I love it except for the cost of the data cards, the most I could justify was the 32 mb card. It gets me 75 % of northern CA. How much memory do you need? Ever consider a Vista?
