  1. i just went paperless! i too debated about PDA, etc... i ended up with cachemate & i took my time & the main thing that helped me were the tutorials on the cachemate web site, esp. the Maryland cacher's web site going through cachemate step by step. If i can do it, anyone can. cachemate will do the conversion & do a hot-sync and there are your caches, very organized & good detail. seems like cachemate is a very good option!
  2. I know this has been brought up before but I am sharing to seeek some help. A cacher grabbed a geocoin of mine back in April of this year and wrote he was going to move on, but... 4 months later & 3-4 emails later to this person, still no movement on the coin. this person just rrecently placed a new red jeep TB out in a cache (8-12-07) so i know he is active to some degree. i have NOT heard replies back from my emails, requests. i even offered to pay for postage to return the coin to em so i can move on. Any OTHER ideas? can i turn him into the secret geocache police/hit squad?? i now this happens, wanted to see if any other ideas or help. I'll gladly share the cacher's ID if it wil help!!
  3. we have kept a 'log-book' for our adventrues, and normally we list the name, waypoint: GC_______, and any clues, hints, or driving details. once a cache has been found, we record what we took/left & anything special about the cache. We have found this type of log helpful with DNF's and write down anything that may help next time you look for it or to share when you log in a DNF. yes, some people may say it's redundant, but we have found it's a quick easy way to keep track of things and it's been fun to look back on the logs & old caches. Have a Great Cache Day!
  4. recently found a new cache and found x3 empty shotguns shells in it! ummm..... caches are to be fun, a game..... so i removed them. I do have some concern with hand sanitizer or ANY liquid in a cache for the risk of not knowing is that the liquid that is suppose to be in that container or something else? I hate to say but you can not trust everyone & there are people out there who might think it's fun to switch something. I never leave liquids or take.
  5. RED JEEPS?? Has anyone spotted the new RED JEEP TBs??
  6. i think i know what you are asking, it is one thing to activate a TB but if you want to have a 'starting point' then what i have done is using one of my own near-by caches, place that TB in my cache after i have activated it and then pick-it up and then you have it's home base. This can be done online, that i do not need to physically go out, place the bug & pick it up. I know there wil not be a physical log entry in the actual log book, but one online. & i have only used my own caches that i know are out there & the status of them. Then at some point you click on the 're-calculate button & got your miles. hope this helps some.
  7. It's July! wow how time flies! anyone have any big mega-cache trips planned for the Summer? would like to here of plans. for us, we are looking forward to Sept. when we go visit some friends in England! so we have already told them about geocaching & know where they live & have done some searches. think we are going over to France for a day also. So come first part of Sept. if anyone needs a TB to go across the 'pond' let us know & see what we can do. HAPPY 4th O-H-I-O!!!
  8. have two boys 8 1/2 & 7. we love geocaching and I decided i wanted them to come up with their 'own' geocache & develop themselves. all i did was pick a local park that had many possible sites & had a few cache containers for them to pick from. We went to the park, they looked, found a spot, we got a waypoint, they came up with the name, theme (hot wheels, of course!), they supplied initial swag and we wrote up the description together. I think it came out really good & it was a good learning experience all the way around. here is the cache they made: Hold on Tight Geocache GC13287
  9. i have everything ready, hide and submit. yes, there have been a couple times some caches are not approved, so i run out and grab the cache & re-use somewhere else. I have thought about waiting, but if that baby is born & you can't deliver the goods.....
  10. we have a small place in our town called wal-mart. think you can find these aorund most anywhere now, should not have to order online.
  11. It is a great container. How long has it been out for? I contacted gorilla glue about it working on plastic and they said it wouldn't. I used it on one of mine and shortly afterward it failed. Im glad it is working for you. That is a really cool design/idea. It seems to have worked out great for you! It has been out since 12/9/06. FYI: I used a spray adhesive first on the container and let it get tacky and then once the gorilla glue was on I waited very patiently for it to 'bubble' up and place the rocks in. so it took awhile to do each side of the container. seems like it's doing well.
  12. [well, here is my most creative cache container to this point. a lock & lock, used gorilla glue around the outside and embedded pea gravel into the gorilla glue. I used alittle green spraypaint to make it mossy/weathered. the cache is located in a pile of old concrete like rocks so this blends in very well. I have had trouble finding it when i've gone out to check on it. It survived the winter and holding up well.
  13. to this point what we have done is have a 5x7 spiral notebook, and on a page write down at least the basics needed with the GC....... hints, or basic driving directions and then leave room to write notes about the cache once found (or not!). As with the clipboard idea, we have found the notebook looks 'official' and you can lay the gps on it and does not look so 'weird'. and with the notebook we can look back on caches not found and helps when you go looking again. But... after reading many posts about PDA's i have purchased a Palm m125 (ebay) and going to give the 'techie' way a try & use the palm for other things.
  14. we were excitied to find our first "hybrid' recently and it turned out to be a waterproof match holder container up in a tree with only log pages. yes, there were some stamps made on the log but certainly no room for a stamp in the cache it's self or no room for swag. We were dissapointed, it really was a small/mirco cache vs. a 'hybrid'. so this is an example that should not have hybrids due to the fact hard to define & actually have a true 'hybrid'.
  15. I think it's great to be able to have something organized for men to get together and be able to have some fun! You look at most churches & the women's ministries are very strong with many activities for them to do but many churches are lacking for the men and ministries for them. We need MORE activities for men to do so that they can get to know each other better, support each other, help each other & that WILL carry over to the families & the men will be BETTER husbands & fathers. AMEN my brother, it's a great idea, in fact i know 3-4 guys in my church that have starting caching & i'm thinking of the same idea. (really, it's just another excuse to get out of the house so we don't have to help with the kids, etc.... LOL ) Come on, ease up everyone, it's simply an informal caching club, not a women haters club. Overall, if a group of people have fun doing something let them have a club. Who says you can't start a women's only cache club? W.A.G.s unite!!!!!!
  16. best little micro hide was in a cacher's front yard by a tree stump under a fake peice of fungus/mold/mushroom. it was stated in the description was in a cacher's yard. We did not get to meet, but fun to find!
  17. move them on indeed! I hate to see a TB sit too long and not be able to achieve their mission. I know I can't help 100% with their mission most of the time, but if I move it on, them hopefully the next person can help more! Enjoy.
  18. I can help with the lock & lock at least. It's a Rubbermaid type plastic container that has a good lid on it with a tight seal to keep moisture out. It's a brand name. sorry can't help with your GPS, I'm sure soemone will jump in! Welcome & enjoy!!!
  19. Hey, I noticed the OHIO forum was dropping down pretty low & no replies since 5/9/07! so I just wanted to get this back on top vs. those INDY guys!! Looks like a great week-end in Central OH to some caches!!!
  20. sometimes you can get a good deal on them with E-bay. hit & miss though. do a search for geocaching travel bugs or just travel bugs.
  21. thanks Grizz, hey, jumping, narrow, and risk of death....sounds great! our 2 geoboys are tough guys. We thank you for your input. Marion is not too far! Thanks!
