  1. The Waymarking website is down and I don't feel like reading 40 threads to try and piece together little bits of info as to what Waymarking and "virtuals" are (ya see? I read "virtuals" in one thread and it was mentioned in another, but I will have to read 15 more to get enough info to find out what it is). Thanks!
  2. I was one of the recent people asking about the Lock On Road feature while Geocaching. You explained to me what I need to do, and that is what I will be doing when I go on hunts. However, I am still curious what the Lock On Road option is for since it's ok to leave it on when going off road? Thanks!
  3. That would take up as much or more space as an actual compass, which would probably be more accurate than the electronic one in the CSx model, definitely cheaper. I don't quite understand - I have a bubble level on the stock of my electric drill that is the size of a shirt button. There is one on my camera tripod that is even smaller. Both work great at their intended purpose and probably cost a few cents each. The compass on my 60csx works just fine, better than the receiver actually. The compass bearing is spot on, it's the distance measurement that is way off. If I just used my GPS for geocaching, I would not spend the money for the electronic compass. In five years of occassional geocaching I have never had the need for a compass, electronic or otherwise. I use my GPS for a lot more than geocaching and find the electronic compass quite handy. Irregardless of whether you *need* the compass built into the GPS, if being level is important to performance, then a better visual indication of plumb would be a valuable upgrade (and probably pretty cheap, too). My point is that the electronic compass is no more accurate than a small conventional compass. Instead of putting a bubble level on the GPS to keep the electronic compass semi-accurate, it would be less expensive and more accurate to just put a conventional compass there (take up as much room, too).

  5. The 60CSx is better than the SP III in just about every way, I would use the 60CSx in the car too.
  6. OK, So I should leave "Lock On Road" turned ON all the time (even when off road), and I should Recalc and choose "Off Road" when I am ready to get out of the car. Thanks! Tomorrow I set out to pop my cherry.
  7. FWIW, you can get a 60Cx from many different places for a little over $300 right now while Garmin has the rebate going. You get the SiRF chip, color screen, expandable memory, auto turn by turn routing, etc. I would look into the better model.
  8. How do they differ? I read the instructions but I still can't figure out what the difference is. The Bearing pointer directs you in a straight line from your current position to the waypoint. The Course pointer directs you to the "course" which is the straight line between where the navigation started and the waypoint. The is used in marine and air navigation where it is important that you stay on a fixed course. I see, thanks!

  10. I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx, this is the unit without the electronic compass. I have two questions about the compass feature in this unit before I head out on my first Geocache hunt today. Should I set it to Course Pointer or Bearing Pointer? Should it be set to True or Magnetic? I'm in New Jersey if that matters. Thanks!
  11. Why is that? What if the cache is far and you need the GPS to guide you on the road before going offroad? For the compass page to route you to the cache, you need to be off road. Otherwise it would try to take you to a nearby street, even if the cache were in the opposite direction in the woods. No problem though, if the cache is far away. I have my unit set to "prompted": When I highlight a cache that is far away, I select "Follow Road". When the road peters out, from the map page, I hit MENU » 'Recalculate' but this time I hit "Off Road", and the unit goes straight into Geocaching Mode. More tips in the FAQ linked in my signature line. Thanks for the reply! What about the "Lock On Road" setting in the Map settings page? Should it be on or off?
  12. Where is that????????????? I did not see it the other day and I do not see it today. Please show us the $29.99 plus free shipping deal from Outpost... dealram shows a bunch of dealers with 1GB miniSD cards for less than $25 including shipping, and a bunch of 2GB cards for $38 to $45 including shipping. With a 2GB card you can probably put the entire NA city select on the card. http://dealnews.com/memory/prices/mini-SD/56/2GB.html -Dave You don't seem to understand that "Mini" is different than "Micro" when it comes to SD cards. Look into it before purchasing one for yourself.

  14. What mounts are you speaking of? I am trying to find a good way to mount mine so I am open to any ideas.
  15. No, but I don't like having to use 2 or 3 other programs from other vendors when I could use one made by the respective vendor (Garmin in this case). I have no reason to take a step down to another program. I am sure you know what I meant, tho.
  16. Yes Great! Glad I asked cause I was about to go and do just that, thanks!

  18. Are you guys saying that since my new 60Cx already has 2.80 that the almanacs are updated and I don't have to do a master reset?
  19. Definitely not worth it, IMO. GSAK is actually only $20 to register, which removes the nag screen. In point of fact, you can use GSAK for free (per their website) for as long as you want, if the nag screen doesn't bother you. Personally, I consider it one of the better twenty bucks I've spent for entertainment recently. And the three bucks a month for GC premium membership is laughably trivial for entertainment expenses, considering the improved query abilities it allows. It's just not worth it at all. I might do one Geocache this weekend, then maybe one in 2 weeks. Hell, maybe in a few months I might do two in a day. I don't like third party software and I don't like paying for something thru a third party vendor. Just my opinion, not worth it for my situation.
  20. Garmin ripped me off on the $75 rebate I was due. I wouldn't trust 'em. I'll never own anotehr Garmin product. How did they rip you off?
  21. I'm selling a new Garmin Quest. I had a problem with the antenna so I sent it back to Garmin and they sent me a brand new unit. I have purchased another model so I would like to sell this new Quest. The only thing about it is that I took the car power adapter apart and ran two wires out of it so it could be hardwired to the car, it no longer will go into a cig lighter plug, it's ready to be hardwired to a car again. Garmin sent a brand new full unlock code with the new replacement Quest, everything else that came with it is included (Mapsource, Car Power Adapter (modified), Home Power adapter, USB Cable, GPS Manual, Mapsource Manual, Car Mount with Suction Cup). Again, the Quest and the unlock code are new and unused. $300 shipped.
  22. I'm selling a Garmin Quest relatively cheap if you're interested. I had a problem with the antenna so I sent it back to Garmin and they sent me a brand new unit. 23. I beg to differ, on the belt of a hiker the vibrations (or downwards momentum every other second) will be higher on the belt.
  24. itchytweed, how did you block 35? Also, there is only 3 WAAS satellites available to the west coast? I'm on the east coast, but I remember at least 8 of my signal bars had a "D" in them, which I thought meant was a WAAS satellite. Thanks for any info!
