  1. For some people, the KML was the easiest thing for them tech wise. Some people aren't tech savy enough to be doing PQs & getting them into GE on their own. They just want to have fun caching. All this other stuff is too much for them.
  2. I'm guessing the people who make the decisions didn't actually use the KML the same way lots of us used it or just didn't use it at all. If its something they used a lot and found useful for general overview and trip planning, they would understand. I used to have the same problem with a boss making changes on things he didn't actually understand how to do in the first place. Its always best to ask the users, and get input before making changes. I was actively in the process of looking at the Northwest for GW8 for next year. Just turning on the KML part every once in a while, once I picked out the touristy stuff first. Now I have to use at least 3 applications / websites to just get the same overview picture of the area, and honestly, its not as good. I'm not doing PQs yet, but I don't need them. I'm very disappointed in Groundspeak at the moment. VERY.
  3. If you are a GSAK user, you can store all kinds of info there. I do. The final coords saved in the corrected coordinate column. How I solved a puzzle in Notes/Log. Answers to virtuals & earthcaches also in Notes/Log. In User Info, I have that I've solved it & still need to go find it.
  4. I would gladly pay a little extra if it meant I could have the KML back. Is this an option? Another membership level? However, if taking it away was a way to get people to pay more to get it back, I'm not crazy about that.
  5. I've suggested this one a long time ago. I would like to see the ability to turn off / on the loading of caches until I'm able to position or zoom the map where I want it exactly, THEN tell it to load the caches. Waiting for caches to load each time I move the map or zoom the map is a major pain in the butt and the major reason I dislike using the maps on gc.com. thanks. With GE KML, that's what I did, turned off the KML until I had the map where I wanted it, THEN turned on the KML. It was wonderful.
  6. Guess I must be one of the 200. This stinks. I suppose I'll try using Mapsource, get to my area, right click & "find nearest geocaches". Then has to rely on the maps at gc.com & the slow time it takes for them to load. Its was my way of staying OFF gc.com & all the unnecessary times to load a map, move it, zoom, move....... Its a DRAG. I've been actively using too because I've already started working on our GW8 trip to OR / WA and it was great to see how many caches in an area, be able to see pics on GE and find hotels all in one application. I don't use it for local caching, but it was great for areas I was unfamiliar with or areas I don't already have GSAK full of caches for.
  7. I was getting it too. All I did was install a newer version of java from java.com. Problem solved.
  8. I first encountered this in CA last year. Hiding micros in locations that could clearly hold a larger container. I had brought travel bugs from MA with me and had the hardest time finding caches large enough to hold them. Lately, the trend has been moving into MA. Several cachers I'm friends with have mentioned it too. It seems to be newer cachers that are doing it. Micros have their place, but larger containers hidden well can be really fun to look for. It takes imagination to hide large containers. No imagination to hide a micro usually.
  9. How long before someone can post it here for those of us who really wanted to be at GW7 but couldn't go.
  10. I like the new Caching Along a Route tool. Much easier than the old method.
  11. I take a highlighter to the long version stash note & just highlight the important stuff. About 2 or 3 lines worth.
  12. Everything in Yosemite is a virtual even though some as listed as multis. No containers, just multiple questions to answer. Beautiful & informative too. Taking the evening tour by tram helped us learn many of the answers but it wasn't necessary.
  13. The decision is announced this Saturday, 5/23/09, right? Can't make it this year sadly, but just wondering where we might be off to next year.
  14. ALRs must be a regional thing. Owners impossing additional rules & feeling the need to delete logs must be a regional thing. I know different parts of the country play differently. They count what is a "find" differently. I guess the new rules don't effect my area of MA too much. If a cache had an ALR and I didn't want to do it, I just would do the cache. But I do understand that those we owner impossed rules & Groundspeak says a find is when you find the cache & sign the logbook. You don't need to do anything else. So, if you want your cache listed here, you need to play by their rules. Simple. You can still list the ALR as an OPTION. You just can't delete someones log because you feel that did to enough to claim a smiley.
  15. I frequent some pretty mean message boards, but I'm constantly amazed at the type of behavior that is tolerated from some around here that I've witnessed for years. Major reason why I read what I need to read, and get the heck out of here before it rubs off. Great family sport. Horrible attitudes from some here. Enjoy your discussion.
  16. Ignore the prior posts from people who don't know you and have never done one of your caches. They don't live anywhere around here. I'm glad too. Is this how they treat their fellow cachers? Emmett, please don't go. You would be greatly missed. You have some of the best caches in the area. I really don't think our part of the country has some of the problems that other parts have with people making up their own rules. We seem to all play fairly here. No one goes around trying to find a way to log something they didn't find, solve or do. At least I don't come across it in all the cachers I know. There will always be rules and changes to rules because people will always find a way around the rules. Its their own problem or loss. Emmett, please don't go, but if you feel you must, please don't archive your caches. They are great caches. EXTREMELY well thought out. They are know for their difficulty (but not impossible) & inguiniety. I know you put a TON of work into them. Hiding is something you love to do. More than finding based on your numbers.
  17. A guy that hubby works with calls geocaching "smurf hunting", so this is perfect!
  18. I know its not a problem, I just like seeing them in the same format we cache in.
  19. The ones I've tried so far don't seem to save the coordinates to the pictures metadata in Degrees Minutes unless I'm missing a way to change it. I've tried Picasa where you geotag thru Google Earth. I've tried Microsofts Pro Photo Tools 2. Free download here. http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/tools.aspx While it does allow you to change the coords format type, Degrees Minutes doesn't seem to be one of the choices. I've tried the GPS track route applied to the photo using EasyGPS as discussed here: http://www.floridacaching.com/index.php?It...t&task=view Is there something somewhere in the computer I need to change?
  20. A lot of caches get a NM put on them, but the owner no longer caches. Even if a good-hearted cacher goes out and fixes the problem with the cache, the icon still remains. In this case, you can contact your reviewer and let them know the maintenance has been done, and they can remove the icon. But, to remove 400 would be a pain. Yes, some are due to inactive owners, but most of the caches with NM flag active are of active cachers but the mark still is there. Either they don't know how to clear it, don't even notice that it's there, what it's implication is or don't even care. Caches that have been found/fixed since the repair have smileys so they don't even realize it has an implication and that they might even get more visits if it were removed. Groundspeak even addressed the issue twice (once in the spring and very recently) in the weekly newsletter but that obviously isn't being read by those with the NM flag. When I notice those & the owner is still active, I send the owner a little friendly email letting them know how to fix it. Not everyone is addicted to caching & reads the newsletter or stays current with all the changes that take place. Just help each other out as often as possible.
  21. Same problem showing up here with same event for me. I was able to get in to log my attendence by going thru my travel bug that I dropped for the event.
  22. Correction on my part. My cheapo phone can't view the cache page via coord.info, but it can via wap. My cheapo phone CAN send SMS text message which lets me log cache found or not found. (Well, actually, the logging part comes when we get back to a computer. NOW, my question, can 2 different phones be used per gc.com premium account? Like a his & a her phone? Or is it just 1 phone / identifier per account?
