  1. It might be something in GSAK. What is the value you are entering in "File to create"?

I think whta you mean by value is what the box reads.

    geocache/new geocache documents(2) gs

Yes, I mean what's in the box.

What you have wouldn't work. As I said in a previous post, you need to have the entire path including the drive letter for GSAK to know exactly where to write the file. In the example I gave of how GSAK does it on my system

    M:\Geocaches\York.gs
M: is the drive letter for my GPS, Geocaches is the folder on the SD card I want the file to be in, and York.gs is the name of the file.

After GSAK writes the file, when I look in the geocaches folder in my 500's SD card, York.gs is there and it has data.

Also there should be a period (".") just before the gs, not a space.

I'd suggest naming your file something shorter so you can see the whole file name on the explorist screen. "New geocache documents(2).gs" is pretty long and not very descriptive. In my example, York is the city centered in the cache file, so it tells me where the caches are concentrated.

I did it and it worked. i put a name for the file and whwn I selected it all the caches opened on the screen.

Boy was I surprised. Thanks for all your help and staying in there for me while I straightened out my problem. Going to look for a cache very shortly.

Thanks again, appreciate it and hope if anyone else out there with a magellan can follow the teps you did for me.

  2. OK...as a a check, can you copy the value in the GSAK "File to create" field here so I can see what you are creating and where it is created? If you are still having any problem that will help nail it down. It should be something like "E:\Geocaches\YourFileNameHere.gs"

I will guess right now that you are looking at internal memory rather than on the SD card. As I mentioned way back, it's easy to confuse the two. In Menu/Preferences/Active Setup, hilight the Geocaches folder (I'm assuming you created a geocache POI file; the direction would be different for a regular POI file) and hit enter.

    Choose "select file."

If your file is displayed, select it and you're home free. If not, choose "up one level" until you can choose SD card. Then you should land in the geocaches folder and your file should show itself.

Again, if you can't find your file, tell me what you have in the "File to create" field in GSAK.

My file to create file readsE. geocache/new geocachs document(2)gs.

This afternoon I was going through the gps and clicked on about and the memory cme with internal memory 565 with half of the bar darken in. The SD memory was clear across the bar scale. should the SD memory show atleast some memory stored. Still no results.

Oh boy, I have something. when i go to preference and select active it comes uo under geocaches

NEW gcache Document (2) when i click on that it comes up select file, I click on that and it comes up on the top screen it reads SD/geocaches\ and below that is up one level and under that is new gache document

when i click on that it brings me back to active set up. I can not find any data in any of the files.

At this point do you think gsak is the problem. I checked the little boxes next to the 20 caches that I downloaded. It shows on the top of the gsak unregistered. Just a thought.

  4. When you connect to your computer in file transfer mode, a window should come up on your computer that looks something like this:

    Explorist%20Rem%20Disk.jpg

Your 500 connects as a removable disk drive. The letter designating which drive your computer thinks it is is listed on the title bar and also in the address. In the example above, my computer calls the GPS "M:"

When you open that browse window to locate your GPS in the "FIle to create" field in GSAK, you need to locate your GPS drive letter under My Computer. For example (remember that I'm looking for M:)

    GSAK%20dropdown%20menu.jpg

Once you click on the right removable drive letter, you should see all the folders on your SD card listed in the browse window. You can then select geocaches, and you can also enter a file name. When you say ok, the browse window should put all of the relevant information into the "File to create" field for you, and you should be able to generate the transfer.

I think we are getting close. after i click on generate it looks like it transfer the data. when i open geocache file it reads new folder mapsend . When I go to the gps I can not find any data.

    Thanks for hanging in there,,

  5. Still having problems. When i turn my gps on the screen on the gps says usb transfer mode. I pressthe aroow keynd select file transfer. i press file transfer on the gps it comes up open and sd card i select sd card and the screen comes back to usb file transfer comm with host machine. Then i go to gsak. on the top of the screen it says gsak version 6 data base Buddy which is my name and unregistered in parenthesis.

the caches that i downloaded on geo.com shows on the screen along with the sample caches that gsak.

I went through the steps and when I enter generate it comes up you can not create a file here, that folder does not exist.

    Helppppppppppppppp

I put a 512 sd card I just brought at best buy. How can I tell if it is working.

OK, now we're narrowing things down.

In that last window (titled "Export to Magellan Explorist and SD Card"), what is the value that is in the "File to create" field? It sounds like you have an invalid path.

If you click the folder icon at the end of the line, you can browse to the geocache folder or My POIs folder in your 500's SD card. You will still have to type in a name for the file.

The card probably works fine, so I wouldn't worry that it's malfunctioning quite yet.

The file to create window is blank. when I click folder icon and the word browse appears in the upper left

corner. i scroll through and the last line is usb. I can not find the geocache word.

    thanks again,

  7. Don't worry about the GPS Set Up menu. The eXplorist is a USB mass storage device in reality. Note that when you choose Magellan as a brand in that dialog box, it says that you should use File > Export > Magellan eXplorist and SD card. You can also go into GPS > Export to Magellan eXplorist.

Edit: And once again, Embra and I are in the same place at the same time.

  8. I can place the usb cable in any port.

OK, when you do that and turn your GPS on, are you able to connect with the computer in Data Transfer mode? Does a Windows Explorer window open up on the computer? If you look in the My POIs folder or My Geocaches folder in this window, are any of the files that you tried to transfer there?

When I go into the either file there is no info. At what speed do i need to set the gps at from the gsak gps set up mode. I download from geocaching.com at it shows up on the scrren when I download the whole page, but can not find any data on my gps.

    thanks for ur time,

  9. You don't see anything on the gps screen, it just says that it is in file transfer mode.

Things can get confusing if you try to solve the same problem in multiple threads. I'd suggest sticking to the first one you started.

Thanks I will do that. I am new to this. I understand. Hopefully I will get this set up.

    have a good day.

  10. Here are some directions for getting cache data from GSAK into the explorist.

Before you do that, though, make sure you are looking in the right geocache folder. Internal memory and SD card have the same structure. When I first got my 500, I downloaded caches to the SD card, but the default folder in the GPS is for the internal memory Geocaches folder. You need to navigate through the folder structure up and over to the SD card, or reset the SD card geocaches folder as the active folder in Active Setup.

I can place the usb cable in any port.

  11. If anyone can help me . i want to start looking for caches. Just got a new explorist 500 and having trouble

downloading cache info to the gps. Just subscribed tp gsak and hace east gps. When I think

I have downloaded and go into the gps it says no data when I go to geocaches. I am new to

    thanks Byron

    I hope this makes sense.
