  1. I have an explorist 500 and National geographic topo program. I would like to hike all the trails in my home town and place the trails on the towns web site. I think that my gps is not compatible to the topo program. I am wondering what gps and topo program will allow me to do this.

    Thanks for any help

  2. I used topo 3d with the explorist until I found a way to convert Magellans older 4.12 (if the number is correct) because it had some fire roads that the 3d lacked - there was also a tedious way to add trails. The Tritons support the National Geographic maps.

    Thanks for the info.

  3. Is it possible to download National Geographic Topo Maps to my Explorist 500. I have tried by using a card reader and no results. Does anyone have any suggestions . Thanks

  4. Just received mapsend topo 3D, brand new in sealed pachagfe. It seems that when I go to load disk 1 the computer does not recognize the disk. I tried this on three computers with no results.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Are you sure the computers you used had DVD drives, and not just CD drives?

    The computer has dvd drives.

  6. Sure it is something very simple we are missing. Hey mods can you move this to the "GPS Units and Software" section so someone smarter than I can have a stab at this? Also check with your local groups, I see where there is an event in Providence on May 3 someone there may be able to give some hands on help. I'll think about it, but I can't figure what you are doing wrong.

    SgtSue,

Thanks for all your suggestions. Vagabond info on reinstalling program worked. Now I am off

to find more geos. Trying to get my wife more interested. Those that are on the bike path are

more her type because you do not have to track into the wooods.

thanks once again for staying with me with your suggestions. and thats for serving in the military.

  9. I wouldn't think it's the map set up, but in case yours came a little different of maybe you played with it some - no not you the kids, yea blame it on the kids if it's set wrong.

    Try Background Maps - Basemaps

    Detail maps - off

Then go to Menu - Map Setup and try

    Detail - Medium

While at the Map Set up click on the Display tab and scroll down to insure "geocache Pts is checked.

Let me know how that does

edit to add - after you get it to display your geocache icons then you can turn put some detail maps on and set detail to whatever level works for you. I believe when there is a problem to go to the base then start from there.

    SgtSue,

Negative on the last attemp. Everything was in the right mode on map setup. This is sure puzzling me.

I have five files on the sd card and not one shows any icons on the nav mode. I think it might be in the create window or the geocach window. I am confused on this one.

  11. Tell us how you are sending the file to the gps so we can trouble shoot.

You said you are using GSAK. Do you insure you are sending fewer than 200 caches in a file?

Filter your GSAK database down to fewer than 200 caches.

Then go to "file" "export" "Magellan explorist and SD card ..."

Insure the block "Required format" is selected to read "Explorist Geocaches"

Note where you are exporting the file to in the "file to create" block

If that doesn't solve it. Write the steps down you are using and we will try to trouble shoot.

    SgtSue,

Thanks for staying with me. 172 waypoints ok on required format, file to create:E:\geocaches\manville.gs

Select from most recent: file=manville.gs path=\geocaches

    geo id % smart

geo name %nameBy(%dif%ter) up top of page child waypoints not checked When I go to the nav mode it looks like a track route appears. do you think it could be my map set up.

    thanks for your time.

  12. The explorist can hold multiple files in either it's internal memory or on an SD card. After loading a file you must then activate the file you wish to use.

From any screen press the "Menu" button

    Scroll down to "Preferences"

    Scroll down to "Active Setup"

Scroll down to the "Geocaches" field

    Click the "Enter" button

a second screen will pull up

    Click on "Select File"

This is where you need to know where you sent the file

Browse to the location you've stored the file

Click on the file you wish to use for the day

Press Navigation button to return to which ever screen you wish to view.

This is the basic procedure to activate your detail maps and other options.

    Hope this answers your question.

Thanks for the reply. I have been doing those steps and when I activate a file by going to the nav mode no cache ions show up on the map. It might be something in the create file or another window. any sugestions.

Once again thanks for responding to my problem.

  13. hi.. i've got an explorist 500... what specifically do you need to know? Are you getting your computer to recognize it when you connect it?

  14. Does anybody want to talk about why they like geocaching? I'm a reporter working on an article on geocaching. I'm finding there is not a whole lot of activity in my area. I took my family geocaching this past weekend and we really had fun! My husband wants to buy our own GPS so we can keep doing it. So, what is the appeal? Why do you guys do it?

I got into geocaching because of this picture that was taken after finding a cache. it is a great outdoor activity. see picture I took on a bike path during the fall. Go to my profile and click on gallery.

  15. Not exactly what you're looking for, but...

With a Bluetooth GPS receiver, there are several utilities that will display a "star map" of satellites, and/or a bar graph of signal strength, your lat/long, heading, and speed. And, of course, with the right mapping software, your position on the face of the world.

Is there a way to connect mylaptop to mytv so several people can view GC or GSak at once without any additional equipment.

    thanks

  16. Is there a way to connect ur gps to the computer so that the screen of the gps shows up on ur laptop or desktop screen?

not quite sure what you're asking but in case you are...

there is no way to take your gps display and "make it big" by somehow connecting it to a laptop. as others have pointed out there are other programs designed to work with a gps-connected-to-a-laptop (like nroute) that can turn your laptop into a large screen gps.

but a way to just have the small display of your gps made bigger by hooking to a laptop - nope, sorry.

well, you could buy a fresnel lens but that's another story...

Thanks for the info. The info from gsak and GC can be viewed on a computer screen which can be projected on to a wall screen using the proper equip. Thought I would ask .

  17. I'm a Cub Scout leader and would like to work a hunt as a Saturday activity. I can get 3-4 GPS units and can send the kids out in teams. Give them each 3-4 things to find and then bring them back for lunch.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions that would make it more fun?

    Marc

I would first make sure they have good compass skills first. You can still hide things by using

    compasses. Just a thought.
