  1. Remember this classic, Jeremy's thoughts on the return of virtuals DCC
  2. Welcome... Absolutely! I've been Geocaching for almost a year and a half. I attended my first event about a month after I started and I have to say, I feel that meeting folks at the events makes Geocaching about a hundred times more fun! Every time I open a log book... "oh look who was just here", "hey, so-and-so has never found this one...", it just makes the whole thing much more personal to me. I also must disagree when it comes to the "high-numbers" cachers. I've met a number of cachers with thousands of finds (including the guy with the most) and haven't had a single bad experience. They like to share stories and talk about "evil" hides just like the rest of us . Don't let what you read here scare you off, come and have a great time at GeoWoodstock and check out events hosted by your local cachers as well. There's a lot of great folks here in Northern California! I'll be at the Friday Night Meet & Greet, Saturday's "main event" and will be caching the Sacramento area until Monday night. If you see me at one of the events, please introduce yourself. I'm "Driver Carries Cache"... I'm almost to 500 finds, and still consider myself somewhat of a "newbie". DCC
  3. Aren't the products labeled with 2008 and 2009 updates? The complete product is called "City Navigator® North America NT" (at least that's what Garmin calls it on their website). DCC
  4. Here's the basic ARLs as it appears on the cache page. A note can be posted just for finding the container, but to claim a find you must complete the challenge. Sorry, what I was trying to say was that if it was my cache, I wouldn't (as the cache owner) log a find, I'd post a note that I (the cache owner) had in fact done exactly what I was asking other finders to do. I say, go ahead and set your challenge up. I'm working on trying to complet a "quad challenge" cache right now. We're having an absolute blast seeing all the "un-traveled" corners of our area. I think the challenges are fantastic fun! DCC
  5. I think this is a good idea, but in my experience, I think many folks would log the cache and ignore the "additional requirements" anyway (at least that's what I've seen locally). DCC
  6. I'm typically against someone logging their own caches (you can't really find something you hid yourself!) but with a challenge cache such as the one mentioned, the journey is the challenge! That being said, if it was me, I would probably log a note that I had completed the challenge. No need to go find the final when I would have hid it myself. But all those wonderful caches that made up the challenge... I'd merrily log every single one of them, with photos and great stories of my adventures. But with the nature of these beasts (challenge caches) it really could be done either way. As you are the cache owner, I'd say it's your decision. DCC
  7. Let me add a big +1 for the Mountainsmith Lumbar Packs.... I absolutely love mine and if or when I need a larger Geocaching carry-all, I will definitely check out their stuff first. My Lumbar Pack is currently carrying: - First Aid Kit - Pathtags - Flashlight - Headlamp - Leatherman - 4in folding knife - 2 8in pairs of locking forceps, 1 straight, 1 curved (for those hard-to-reach spots) - Garmin 60csx - Digital Pocket Camera - Extra Batteries for everything - Pens - My geo-nametag (for events) And as I carry it every day, it also has: - Corkscrew (to open wine bottles) - iPod & headphones All in a nice little pack! DCC
  8. Congrats! I've been sitting at 494 now for almost a month... jut no spare time! I think I'll probably hit 500 at Geowoodstock at the end of the month. And I'm hoping to find a couple hundred during the four days I'll be caching around the event. So I could start with 500 on Friday night and end up with 700 by Monday night! That sounds wild! DCC
  9. Here's a thought... half the argument on this topic is always "it's up to the cache owner to decide"... Well, how about when you publish the cache you have the option (as the cache owner) to lock out multiple logs. You check the "one log only" checkbox and voila... no multiple logs! It's your cache, right? DCC
  10. Ooooohhh! I definitely would find those tempting. Nice work! DCC
  11. Probably had to downsize due to the subprime mortgage thingy? Actually, it was the cost of the servants and the upkeep on the polo ponies that did me in. DCC
  12. I have to say... I've left my share of "why exactly did you bring us here?" logs. I've even started adding a feature to my cache pages titled "Why Am I Bringing You Here"! But after looking at the photos in the logs for the cache in question, I can't figure out what there is to complain about... looks like a nice spot in the woods to me. I don't typically leave the "Why Here" logs unless the place is strewn with garbage, old appliances and used syringes. BTW... I think you posting a note on the cache page calling them out for their logs is kinda un-called for, but that's just my opinion. DCC
  13. Just to clarify... the problem I mentioned above wasn't caused by "crap HTML" the HTML in question was fully W3C compliant. If you're viewing the listings as text on the iPod... the HTML (as well as the content) will show up as text. DCC
  14. I'll be there! Will be caching, more caching, and nothing but caching from Friday to Monday! Looking forward to meeting some of the forum folk... and I'm going to be looking for some of those Snoogans sig items in the local caches My caching buddy will be cooking at the Friday Night Meet-And-Greet... we'll see ya there! DCC
  15. I was sure Groundspeak was already all over this. You guys rock! DCC
  16. One of our local cachers goes out for caches in muggle-dense areas wearing an orange vest and a hard-hat and carrying a clipboard. He says no one even notices him. You'd be surprised what works. Another cacher once said that if someone approaches you, ask them for spare change... they'll beat a hasty retreat. DCC
  17. But what happens if I donwload your cache and load that PQ into my Palm? It's not going to display HTML either? But I guess when I send the PQ through GSAK and send it to the Palm, it re-formats it as well. You are correct though... as long as Groundspeak and Garmin (or Magellan) are on the same page either solution would work. Love the added functionality of these new handheld units... got to play with both of them at a recent event and all I can say is it's a good thing my local REI Sporting Goods was already closed for the evening or I might have done something "rash" on the way home! DCC
  18. This is definitely an issue with the new Colorado series! I started using a bit of HTML in my cache pages... nothing crazy (example) and one of our local cachers said "every time I load the cache description in the Garmin Colorado... the unit locks up and I have to remove the batteries to get it unlocked". It's not like the HTML I'm using is anything crazy... I'm actually replicating the code that Groundspeak is using for their "disclaimer" box just above my code. It's perfectly friendly HTML code, but the Colorado chokes on it. We were wondering as well why the HTML isn't stripped out by Groundspeak before it goes into a PQ. Great topic, good suggestion. DCC
  19. You are currently able to post finds on each of your hides, thus boosting your find count. As for that being free from criticism... it isn't, and in the opinion of many (including myself) shouldn't be. You can't "find" something that you hid yourself. I also wouldn't want to encourage hides from cachers who aren't really enthused about hiding something. That just leads to poorly conceived caches. I think the best "credit" you can get for your hides are the compliments of those who find it, especially if you end up on someones "all time favorites" bookmark list! DCC
  20. Awesome! That requires some good timing, and some quick searching! I just had my best FTF day (4) during an event. We didn't set out aiming for FTF's, but we managed to find 4 before anyone else did! Fun, Fun, Fun! DCC
  21. Northern California has been crazy! I came in this morning and opened my email to 15 new caches (just hidden over the weekend)... there seem to be a few new ones every day and we're all getting ready for Geo-Woodstock to come visit! I'd say things are great in our neck of the woods. We've got a heavily active geocaching community! DCC
  22. Actually, TPTB (The CEO) called it a "silly" practice, or I believe even "stupid". But the company line is that it doesn't affect anyone else, and geocaching is not a competitive game, and there are cases where it is permissible, so no need for a progamming change. I'll see if I can dig up the ol' quote later tonight, search doesn't seem to be working good for me right now. Quoting myself. Eh, this is the best I can come up with: Jeremy speaks on logging a cache twice It must have been "take one leave one" rules on travel bug hotels that he called "stupid". Which I'm sure he regrets doing, seeing as geeks like me look up the stuff years later. Here's what you're looking for: Jeremy on mulitlple logging DCC
  23. What if the sign just said "Hunting And Fishing Prohibited"? Or if it's just a "No Trespassing" sign, stick a geocaching.com logo sticker in the corner and write "OK" on it! DCC
  24. Didn't you just chastise someone over their "netiquite"... then I get snide comments about "prized" multis... Thanks, Discussion is obviously over. Done with this thread. DCC
