First, let me apologize for the long post.
Yesterday I researched and researched hand held GPS units and after work went and looked at the two GPS units I am considering – the Garmin 60Csx and the Magellan 600. The main reason I am getting a GPS is to help me navigate cities and the countryside in Europe (primarily Florence, Italy and surrounding areas while walking, biking and driving) when I go there in a couple weeks for an extended work assignment. After comparing the two I have determined the following differences:
60Csx – physically larger (but not a deal breaker, but do prefer size of 600), slightly larger screen with better resolution screen and more colors, option for external antenna, 2 AA batts, I have read some problems people are having with elevation and some routing problems with 60Cxs (should this dissuade me from this unit?).
600 – Smaller, no external antenna option, 3 axis compass, rechargeable lithium ion battery, smaller screen with less colors and lower resolution.
Other than the above, the features between the two seem very similar. The most important feature to me is the ability to get accurate and detailed point to point directions while walking, biking and driving in European cities. Is one of the above two better suited for that or is there a 3rd I should consider?
Is the necessary software for the 60Csx (Mapsource City Navigator Europe - $300) or the software for the Magellan 600 (Mapsend Direct Route Europe - $150) better/more detailed/provide more information or they pretty much equivalent? I would think the Garmin would be better since it is twice as much - $300. I assume getting one of these two software packages is a must if I want point to point in Europe?
Which one (if one) would getter a better/stronger signal and keep it when used in a city like Florence, Italy when walking, biking or driving? Would either one be able to keep a signal better when put into a pair of shorts pocket or used in a car (without an external antenna)? I have read the 60Csx gets signals very well and if it does indeed get and keep a signal much better than the 600, to me, that is very important because the unit is worthless if it can’t get and keep a signal.
Online, the price difference between the two units is about $100 and the price difference between the Europe maps is about $150 making the 60Csx $250 more. I am willing to pay the difference if it is worth it, is it?
Lastly, I assume both units will work in Europe and no type of service fee, etc. would ever be required?
Thanks!!
