  1. Java Duck, How close are you to 47.29.55?? Would that be too far out of your way for a side trip?
  2. I live in Calgary so GPSCentral is just a quick drive down the road. I have gone thru them for all my gps and geocaching requirments and I have never found them to be anything less than extremely helpful and very knowledgable. I have never used GPSCity and with the service I get from GPSCentral I see no need to ever have to. I have been in the store when they were sorting out problems over the phone and after overhearing the conversation I can say that they did everything in their power to satisfy the customer.
  3. I have some Calgary Area Cachers geocoins that I would be interested in trading with anyone who has other types of coins. (other than Canada geocoins). These are numbered and can be tracked but at present we are only tracking them locally. Basically it's up to the owner what he wants to do with them so I'm willing to trade mine for other types.
  4. I've held a road rally for the last 3 years and found it's a great way to get people out. First couple of years the winner was the team to find all the caches while travelling the shortest distance according to their track logs. Last year I converted it to a poker rally and am thinking along the same lines this year. It has been well received and attended in the past. Toss in a bbq afterward and it's a great way to spend a day.
  5. Hi all, for those who don't know me I'm graylling, cacher and webmaster. Just a quick post to let all and sundry know that we finally got our website sorted out and have our own domain name. You can find us at www.calgarycachers.ca Feel free to join in the fun. I am always looking for submissions and while the site is mainly oriented toward caching in the Calgary area anyone is more than welcome to suggest articles and news related to caching. It's always nice to hear from other people in the sport. Might even want to bookmark the site in case you ever make it out here and want to check things out. See you there.
  6. You might check out our links page on the website. www.calgarycachers.ca Lemon Fresh Dog has made up some maps of the cache density in certain areas of the city. It will give you an idea of the number and relative location of caches in Nose Hill and some other areas of the city.
  7. We are the Calgary Area Cachers located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada Website at http://members.shaw.ca/caching Submissions to sections on the website are welcome from any cacher anywhere even though the site is oriented toward the Calgary area. Contact: graylling@shaw.ca

Anyone up for a bbq before the snow really starts flying??
  10. Over the next year or so if I get enough interest I'm looking at expanding the site to include the rest of the province one bit at a time. I was thinking of different sections for each geographical area. Something to think about. However I'm always open to submissions from other cachers. Always good to broaden your horizons..
  11. I visit my brother in Winnipeg (Geargeek) a few times a year and always manage to find some caches while I'm there. You guys have a great province for caching with a lot of area to fill up yet. Here in Calgary we have enough caches within 100 mile to keep everyone going for a while but as always theres never enough. lol I just recently put up a website for caching in the Calgary area Calgary Area Cachers that anyone can check out. You don't have to be in this area to take a look and make a submission. If you are thinking of setting up a Caching group in Manitoba I know that Geargeek would love to get involved. Maybe you can get something going then set up a web site like I have done for caching in Calgary. It would be a good tool to introduce cachers to your group and area.
  12. So i'm not alone in this. My brother in Manitoba commented on it to me this morning. Anything being done to correct this? "It ain't an adventure til something goes wrong" If it ain't awkward it ain't fun.
  13. I held a road rally here in Calgary about a month ago. It wasn't a TSD more for safety sake than anything else. I went strictly on the shortest distance covered while visiting all the caches I had stashed. Everyone that participated thought it was a great idea and a lot safer than trying to do it in the fastest time. Especially since some of them had the kids and dogs along. Confirmation was done by zeroing the trip log at the start and collecting the tracklogs after. I held mine in the city so I didn't want to go the TSD way. If it is held out in the woods someplace it might be feasible. But either way it's a great idea to get together with other cachers in your area. If it ain't awkward it ain't fun.
  14. That bit about home made solutions for an external antenna for the Etrex line also peaked my interest. Sure would be interesting to find out what Zartimus was talking about. If it ain't awkward it ain't fun.
  15. You are right.. We probably would end up with a lot of rather carelessly thought out caches. It was not meant to be a realistic suggestion, just an emphasis to Dirtrunners desire to be first. It is very unlikely country, including us, will ever catch the US in the number of caches placed. I think being second is terrific and shows the level of interest for geocaching in this country. Keep it up. If it ain't awkward it ain't fun.
  16. every geocacher in Canada placed 5 caches within the next week we might overtake the US. Second is just a way of saying your not first yet but your working on it. Besides... We do have a first in Geocaching here. One of our members in Calgary was the first non-american cacher to log 100 caches. Can't beat that.
  17. I haven't found my yellow Etrex to be any more or less accurate than any other make or model.. Many times it's brought be to within 1 - 2 meters of a cache. One thing I do find is that it's accuracy when you are moving is less than if you are standing still. When I find a cache I'll just put the unit down and wait for a minute or two. During this time you can see the accuracy of the reading increasing until it's within a meter or two of the caches posted coords. Never had it anywhere near 120 ft off though.
  18. I'm a Flight Simulator Technician for Westjet when on shift and a novice geocacher off shift.. Now ask me which one I prefer to be doing.
