Had a reporter contact us a couple of years ago, & he did a very nice full page spread on geocaching. Contacted us about a month ago, & wanted to do a piece from a different perspective. So he did some research, & went out & placed a cache. After it was out for about 1 1/2 weeks,(last week)he went & retrieved the cache camera to get the film developed. The story from the point of view of the cache owner is supposed to run in tomorrows paper. Should be interesting. Looking forward to it. Not sure if I'm looking forward to the possibility of seeing some of the pics from the camera in the newspaper. I've retrieved about 20 cameras from my caches, & most of the pics look like something from a 10 most wanted list.

cheaperthandirt.com gets my vote as well. I've gotten 40 ammo boxes from them, & all in great shape. Delivered to my door at a great price.

Your old reflocations file was renamed .txt.bak. Move it to a different folder and rename it so you can open it. Cut and paste the coords to the new file.
Without coords spinner will not make sort by distance indexs.
Thanks, leatherman. I'll look for it again. Appreciate your assistance.

I always used the "index by distance from location" feature, to get caches listed by distance from home co-ordinates. Not in the latest release. Tried adding a RefLocations.txt file to no avail. E-mailed LilDevil direct on Sunday, but must be out of town. I went back to a previous version.

In Mapsource, go up to the "edit" drop down menu, hit "preferences", then hit "waypoint". There you have the option to view symbol, symbol & name, etc.

Great stuff, LilDevil. Been using spinner all along, & it just keeps getting better. Thanks for all your work on this priceless app. I've sent in my donation to the cause, & it's worth that & more.

gpscity.com has the eTrex Legend for $203 & then you get a Garmin $50 rebate. That's final cost = $153 for a decent unit with waas & mapping capabilities. 8mb of memory capacity. Don't own one myself, but for a starter unit, it's a great deal. You can buy the mapping software at a later date if necessary. Plenty of fellow cachers swear by the Legend. Just a little input from my end. Hope it helps.

Great Thread.
First video game for TV I remember was "Pong". Used to sit for hours & watch that dumb ball bounce around the screen. My favorite TV show when I was a kid, was "Sky King". Used to sit down in front of the TV & watch that every Saturday while dining on peanutbutter & jelly sandwichs. Sneaking out at night to play kick the can was one of my favorites too. Great to read all the posts here & remember better times. Too bad things will probably never be like that again.

Changes made from version 2.08 to 2.20:
Improved auto-route calculation process when transiting from poor to good satellite reception.
Reset map zoom levels to correct a problem that was preventing areas like parks and lakes from being displayed on the map.
Corrected auto zoom behavior while navigating a TracBack route.

Disable 'lock on road' feature when navigating a TracBack.
Added 'units' selection for distance to the Waypoint Projection page.
Fixed auto zoom problem that was observed when doing direct gotos and manual routes.
Navigation state changes made without a fix will now be preserved between power cycles.

I was thinking about getting the new version. Did some research, & got this from a very reliable source:
Quote:
I need to clarify a few things about v5 MetroGuide. First and foremost
it is NOT necessarily an update to the 4.01 version of MetroGuide. It is
more of a map vendor
change than an update. Garmin is no longer buying maps from TeleAtlas (the
company that
made the 4.01 version of MetroGuide). The new MetroGuide is NavTech data.
The data on the new MetroGuide is IDENTICAL to the data on the current
version of City Navigator except for AK and HI. The AK and HI maps on the
new MetroGuide are Tiger based maps as NavTech does not yet offer coverage
for AK and HI. The new version of MetroGuide will NOT
auto route on an auto routing GPS and there is no reason to have that
function as City Select and City Navigator are already included with the
auto routing GPS's except for the GPSMAP 196. In some areas the 4.01 version
of MetroGuide maps may actually be better maps than on the new version of
MetroGuide. If you are considering buying the new version of MetroGuide and
you already have the last version I'd strongly suggest that you do some
comparing of the maps via the Garmin online map viewer.
MetroGuide v5 does NOT have any coverage of Canada.
End Quote
So do some investgating before you buy.
Hope this helps.

Garmins Street Pilot, V, III Plus, MAP76 & eMap. All great units. Never had a problem with any of them. Had the Vista, but after 3 trips back to Garmin for service, I sold it. Guess I just happened to get a lemon.

IMHO, it seems theses clones are not nearly to the caliber of geocaching.com, they aren't are graphically pleasing, interfaces aren't as intuitive, and the content seems to be less than that of geocaching.com, BUT!
....there are a lot of "repeat" caches. On some of these sites I've seen a lot of caches in my area that are on geocaching.com.
Do you think that people who participate on geocaching.com are participating in these other "cache communities" and list their caches?
Or do you think that these sites have some method for mining the data from geocaching to populate their sites?
Just curious, curious to see what other people think of these "geoclones".
peace!

Who Cares??
I can't get the same variety of merchandise at J C Penney as I can at Sears. Doesn't mean I won't go to Penneys. Won't slam them either. Some folks, myself included, enjoy the local flavor at the other site. If I were from another state, I probably wouldn't spend much time there. There's other caching sites as well, but I'd have nothing to gain by cutting them down because they don't have the features we have at GC.com. I respect them for spending the money & time to do what they wish to promote the caching community. The term "Cheap GeoCaching Rip-Off sites", leads me to believe that you have no clue what you're talking about. Don't like it, don't go there.

My Viper is 60 miles East of the start since the day the race started as well. I'm hoping to get back to the Start Point by the time the winner gets to California.

Since the Platinum doesn't have an external antenna, I'm wondering what my other options might be to get good signal.

Thanks, Mike.
I've got the 706 set up rather well. I got 2 of the mount kits. In the shack, I've got the power supply, auto tuner & chassis out of sight. Then I stained a 6" wide X 4' long piece of oak board & mounted one of the mounts on the board on the wall alongside my computer stations. Put the front panel on the mount, & alonside, put a chrome screw in to hold the mike, another to hold the Heil headset & also mounted a remote speaker. Works out great. Then in my van, I fabricated an aluminum block that sits firmly in a recess in my dash. I put the other mounting bracket on the block & the front panel sits right there in plain view. I set the chassis & a second auto tuner back near the back of the van behind the rear seat. The connectors for the 2m/440 antenna & HF hamsticks are right there, as I have the coax coming thru the back door with the antennae mounted on the roof near the back of the vehicle. Have another remote speaker mounted in the van as well. Also works out very well. My problem is that I get tired of transporting the chassis & other gear back & forth between the 2 locations. I'd like to leave the 706 chassis etc. right in the van & have a rig in the shack that stays there. After doing a little more checking, I think I'm going with the IC-746PRO. I believe a lot of the functions on the 746 are similar to the 706, so should be a little easier to get used to. Decisions, decisions.
Thanks for your input.

What do you use at home?
I've got the VX-5R for an HT. Icom IC-706MKIIG for mobile. Now I'm looking into a home/base unit. Kind of narrowed it down to the Icom IC-746 Pro or the Yaesu FT-847. Anybody have any thoughts?

Greetings, tophat. Let me try to explain this right. I've done this with Mapsource Topo & other mapping programs. Start by loading the discs onto your hard drive. To a folder such as Garmin. Then go to "Start menu, Run" & type in "regedit". If you'd feel safer, back up the registry at this point. I didn't. Then double click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE". Then "Software,Garmin,Mapsource,Products". (All this assuming it's Garmin stuff) At this point, you'll see see keys(or folders) entitled 10,11,12, etc. for each one.The right side of the screen will show the name, & you'll see a listing "Loc d:MGWest". You can then double click on Loc, & change the path to wherever the map files are. So now, when you call up the mapping software, instead of going to look for it on "d"( or whatever your cd drive is), it will look for it on your hard drive(in the location you've assigned the drive letter to). Hope this is clear enough. Works for me. Good luck.

MAP76 is an excellent unit & $100.00 is a very good price. I know I wouldn't part with mine for twice that amount. Go for it.

I've got 4 set-up, all set up at different times. They range in number from 365 to 6000, & they all show up like clockwork. No problems whatsoever. Even after making modifications, they show up at the scheduled time & with all the caches included.

Going to be in the newspaper
in General geocaching topics
Posted
I'd imagine that's usually the case. But here, the reporter isn't just writing a column type story. He's a feature writer that weekly has a full page to himself in the outdoors section of a magazine type insert in the local paper. The first article he wrote, was a descriptive account of his journey to find a cache. It was all first hand knowledge with pictures. He's written many stories about his adventures in all kinds of different sporting type activities.
Hiking, mountain biking, camping etc. He's a sporting enthusiast that weekly takes on new challenges or experiences & reports from his perspective. As it's doubtful that an editor is along on his journeys, I'd guess that his pieces aren't doctored up by anyone.
