  1. There are times that I would do a cache that included 100 miles between stages. But usually I would not. And to repeat, you should clearly include that information in the cache page. A cache hider can do just about anything with his hide. As long as it meets the guidelines and is clearly described, go for it. That does not mean that anyone would find it. But then again maybe someone would. Some people cache for the challenges. That would be a challenge. But you also invite colaboration on a cache that far apart. Call Joe, give him the info and have him do the second stage. Maybe that could be part of the challenge. Team effort. Enlist another cacher in another location. Let's see how it plays out.
  2. I want to give trippy an attaboy for his work on our all new Michigan Geocachers Organization website. MIGO is going strong. Thanks trippy et al.
  3. Doc Ott's cache with long distance/bearing calculations was the one I had most fun with yet. I was able to be the first finder. But I didn't do any calculations. I just used my map program and the distance/bearing feature. Thanks Doc for the great cache!!
  4. I believe that he means the bridge from Detroit to Windsor, Ont. The name of that bridge is the Ambassador Bridge. The Bluewater Bridge connects Port Huron, MI to Sarnia, Ont. The International Bridge connects the two Sault Ste. Maries (MI, Ont)
  5. Power lines make it hard to get a good reading. Are any nearby?
  6. Try this. Create a waypoint where you are. Then stand still and create another one, change the Lat or Lon so it is ten seconds away from the first. Do a go-to and see what it says. Or do any interval you want to check out.
  7. I don't have any problem with what you did. I have helped someone before whose GPSr did not tell him how far to the cache with an arrow pointing in the direction to go. His just showed direction using bearing and was harder to use. I was at the first stage before he was and was leaving. I watched him for a few minutes and made a couple comments to help him find it. At the second stage I found it first but walked away from it and let him find it using my GPSr. I would not just say 'Over under the oak tree' but I would help when someone needed it.
  8. That rubber stamp is a great idea. Can't wait to order that. This geocaching is getting easier all the time.
  9. Just remember the guy from Australia saying it was 110 in the shade. Besides I have not had to worry about West Nile and the mosquitos.
  10. "and free-form narrative ("nice view, and saw two deer on the hike in")." I like Leprechauns's suggestion. I think I will use it from now on. I never knew what to write but now I do. Joe's Urban Cache Jan XX, 03 nice view, and saw two deer on the hike in Mary's Mountain Cache Feb. XX, 03 nice view, and saw two deer on the hike in Thanks Lep.
  11. I really appreciate the sense of humor on this forum. Often it is subtle and/or self deprecating. Keep it up.
  12. Some cachers that like to be the first to find a cache (FTF) are eager to find no matter how hard it is hidden. Just let the cache sit for a while and see what gets posted to the site. You could also email the ones who find it and explain that you are new to hiding and want their opinions. Good luck.
  13. It was not the pen in the cache!! It was the one that I kept inside my several layers of clothing so it could take advantage of the body heat I was working so hard to preserve! And I had to write fast.
  14. If I picture this correctly it is a series of steel bars placed a few inches apart across the road so cattle won't cross but cars can cross easily. Then a fence on either side comes up to the cattle guard keeping the cattle just in one area. What about the possibility of moving the hanging string toward the side of the road nearer to one of the fences instead of being in the middle? Would that be an appropriate suggestion to the cache owner? Or is that something that a finder could do?
  15. It is amazing that I can be out caching in 10 degree F weather and knowing I have to keep moving to keep warm and others are doing all they can to keep cool while pursuing the same hobby. Be careful down there.
  16. When you can't tell the color of your fingers from the color of the ink when you are writing in the log book. When you realize that your vehicle is the only one in the parking lot of a popular park that is usually well occupied.
  17. Hey Marky - I think you get the prize for having ghe cache close to the trail - in this case a paved sidewalk. To close in my humble opinion! Beautiful camo. Here in Michigan we like to cache year round and I ran across one that used green leaves and it stuck out in the late fall/winter caching season. So it depends on where those are hid. But I like them.
  18. I tend to like the caches to be farther from the trail. I am in this to get out. If I wanted to stay on the pavement or trails I could go to town and walk in any park or down any sidewalk. To spell out other reasons, I will defer to Capthawke who spoke eloquently regarding this matter.
  19. Two things. One. I believe the note you are looking for is available on the Hide and Seek a Cache page. On the right side of the page listed in many different languages. Two. I think it is a good idea for cachers to get a few more cache finds under their belt before beginning to hide their first cache. It gives you a better sense of what works and what doesn't work. It will give you other ideas. See what other people do with their hides. On the other side of that argument I realize that some people enjoy different aspects of this geocaching craziness than I do. Some enjoy the hunt. Some enjoy the hide. Some enjoy the hike or the view, or the togetherness for the family. And some first hides turn out to be very good ones. Some people have a great imagination and some don't. Good luck.
  20. Sometimes I feel like a newbie but I just did number 117 today. Tried two but the second one I could not finish. Too dark.
  21. I have spent hours, dollars, brain power, etc. and am enjoying this more than I can express. What is a few bucks here or there. Some people I know spend lots more than I do on their hobbies. But to my earlier list I also have to add the laptop and camera although I already owned them. If I hadn't I would have purchased them for caching.
  22. What about the trinkets? Princeton tec led head light? Hiking boots? Cold weather gear for winter caching? Blaze orange vest and hat for caching during hunting season? External GPS antenna? Dell AXIM Pocket PC? Back Pack? Travel bugs and tags? This list could get looooooonnnng.
  23. I never checked that out but my bug numbers are goofy too. On My Cache page there is a list of 11 bugs. On my profile it lists 10. I have no idea why.
  24. Not sure. If I have not found it I don't know how hard it is. I would suspect that a diamond cache would be the hardest.
