  1. Yea, verily. I reported a dnf today. Where you at?! I hang my head in shame, but yes, oh yes, I shall return tomorrow. I will remove this badge of dishonor from my chest...
  2. I teach elementary school and one book I always enjoy reading to the kids is called Mrs. Rumphius. To make a long story short, Mrs. R has a few goals in life and one of them is to make the world more beautiful. She does this by scattering lupine seeds about wherever she goes. Within several years, the area around her community is always blossoming and her legacy is secured. While caching today during my off track time, I packed out a bag of trash. Also, I sprinkled a ton of california golden poppy seeds about (our state flower) in the hopes they will take hold and bloom. I want to check back in the late spring and see if they have grown. I'm going to try this more often just to see what comes of it... FWIW - golden poppies are an indiginous (spelling?)flower so I'm not upsetting the delicate balance of nature or anyhting.
  3. Amerikans watch way too much crime television. They are conditioned to view strangers as rapists, murderer, and/or cannibals. Nevermind that Joe Sixpack is more likely to be killed on the freeway or by his fast food diet... So no, I'm not surprised that 40 year old white guys with "detonators," er, GPSr, are being reported to the cops by over-caffeinated, paranoid, "patriotic" citizens. -Christian who is more afraid of his government than terrorists
  4. Eh, I see nothing wrong with simply looking for caches, yet never planting one of your own. The key, I think, is to leave each cache you do find in the same, if not better, condition than you found it. This is my goal at least. Clean up the area, sprinkle some wildflower seeds about, remove dirty, filthy trinkets, and replace with items of distinction and merit.
  5. I picked up an ammo box today in advance of future cache placement. I sanded down the box and sprayed it with a tan base coat. I want to paint it in a desert camo theme, but I have no idea how to do this. Would anyone with these skills share them here, or point me to a link? I have two shades of tan paint, some white and black. I guess I just need help with the actual spraying. Do you just eye ball it, or do you use a stencil? Thanks! And I need to know how many Wal Mart/glad bags to wrap it in. hahahahahaha!
  6. quote:Originally posted by Criminal:I'm interest to hear opinions on this subject and some ideas on the "perfect" cache in PC terms. Two new caches went up in my area, but they are hidden "along well traveled paths used by children, dogs, and their companions." I live next to a park like this and as a teacher and parent, I would be very wary of strangers poking around the bushes at odd times. By looking at logs books, I was surprised to see that some cachers hunt in the wee hours of the morning or late at night. I'm sure that these folks are decent and law-abiding, but I wouldn't want them in my neighborhood park. Why wouldn't I want strangers in my neighborhood? With the rash of child abductions I don't want to worry about keeping an eye on folks I don't know. Furthermore, in So. Cal. there have been incidents of people "booby trapping" play equipment with razor blades and nails. If I saw some one poking around the bushes or play equipment, I would be wary, indeed. For the love of GAWD, keep the caches in out of the way areas. What you keep them in I could care less. Well, trash bags suck, but that's just me.

Laura Laura, Check out a cache called Mega Volt. It's right off the 215 near Murrietta. A bit of a drive for you, but it's easy as pie to find.

  9. quote:Originally posted by Happy Hippo:Is it possible to submit a series of waypoints(a route) for a new cache? I visited a cache yesterday that had coordinates for parking and another set as you got close. I really like parking coordinates. Finding a suitable (safe) place to park is an important factor and I like suggestions as to where I should put the sled.
  10. quote:Originally posted by k2dave:Do you thing this would work: A cache that has only one item and if you trade it you must leave a more valuable item then you take. If you can't make the trade then just sign the log and leave. Hiya, After visiting two caches today, my wife has decided it would be a good idea to "improve" the contents of future finds. FREX, we visited a site that had all sorts of ratty, dirty little toys. Her comment, "People drop two bills on a GPS, yet can't afford a Hot Wheels car that's still in the shrink-wrap?" Granted, Geocaching is about the hunting rather than loot, but I could see how some folks might look down upon the activity if all they ever discovered were random sticks of gum, single band aids, and maybe some broken crayons. So yes, it is a dadgum fine idea for people to trade up.
  11. I was putting together a first aid kit and my dad-in-law, a retired Navy medic, suggested the inclusion of maxi pads. He pointed out that they have great absorbency and would help staunch blood flow. I thought this was rather clever. So, I was wondering if you folks had any first aid kit suggestions that you'd like to share?
  12. I was reading a mag that is oriented towards the role-playing game crowd (you know, games of Satan) and the editor was talking about geocaching. The wife had been on me to come up with a family activity and this seemed perfect. Score one for me!
  13. quote:I have not had any problems when Geocaching but I plan ahead. I know some people will freek about the gun thing, But it does not go on cach hunts in areas with a lot of people like in the city or parks, only when out in the woods. That doesn't sound strange to me at all. The only reason I carry my own weapon (SW 908) is to defend against dogs who want to bite either myself, my family, or my own pup. For what it's worth, I only carry in remote areas.
