  1. There's also an iphone version of this. Just downloaded it, haven't tried it yet.
  2. Unlocking maps isn't what caused your OS to crash. If it was responsible for doing this on any kind of regular basis, it would be widely known, and it would have been fixed long ago. The fact that you were willing to pay someone 75$ to reinstall your OS indicates quite a bit of computer naivete, and that you probably don't actually know what actually crashed your OS, so please don't go tilting at windmills. However, as you're probably still bummed at garmin, I'll suggest you look at the Delorme products.
  3. It was annoying to many of us who would be navigating towards a cache, and the approaching the cache page would pop up, and we'd have to press the ok button to have it go away and get back to the map or pointer. Just having the beep is enough of a proximity indicator. It was extremely annoying to have something pop up in the way of the screen I was using to navigate with. Yes, having such a thing user configurable would be nice, but don't get your hopes up - I don't think garmin is going to be adding any more functionality to the oregon line in the near (or far) future.
  4. I actually don't see what all the fuss is about. Smyrna is centrally located within a larger area that has an unusually large number of geocaches per capita. If a certain cache is pmo, you can almost always find a non-pmo one within a few hundred yards. Personally, I'm not concerned about you yokels and your pmo's - there are so many platinum member only ones here that I don't really have time for the plebian finds. Smilies? Platinum members don't need stinking smilies...
  5. I recently took a week long road trip where my oregon 550t (with the latest firmware) was on nearly all the time. While it worked fabulously most of the time, I also experienced quite a few distinctly weird anomoly/crashes. I wrote a detailed bug report, and posted it to http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/ and also sent it to garmins oregon support. I thought it was just firmware glitches, but garmin seemed to think they should replace the unit, which they've done, for free. I thought this was odd, as the unit is 2 years old, but if they're willing, I'm game. We'll see how the new one does... BTW, it also sounds to me like the little foam pieces that sit behind the battery contacts have come out or need replacing. When the 60csx came out they had a similar problem with the units powering off when taking small bumps, and they did a recall and installed the little foam inserts behind the battery terminals which alleviates the problem somewhat. These same inserts are in the oregons. Also BTW, you don't need to take out the battery and leave it out for 15 minutes or whatever - just popping it back in will have the same effect. Popping the batteries out to reset the unit seems to be a part of life with an oregon, although it can be a really quick pop out - just snap out one end of one of them and pop it back in should do the trick.
  6. Didyou really need to even come in here and post.....a negative comment at that. If you don't like it, why bother even checking this thread out.....just move on to the next. DANG! What is up with you negative folks?!? Ditto!! I am so sick of the negativity too!! As far as my CacheMobile....mine is the typical mom minivan. No pics though. Well soooorrrrryyyy! Didn't realize I was being negative. I just thought perhaps the OP was new and didn't realize there is already a fun and festive thread on this very topic (that I've posted my ride in) that was still active. I actually didn't mean to seem negative - should have stuck some smilies in there. Is there an acronym for "should have stuck some smilies in there"? My apologies to everyone involved.
  7. 8 months of membership? I wouldn't worry about it yet.
  8. You didn't see this thread? http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=278210
  9. I don't really see why it's a problem to log it. I wouldn't do the FTF thing, as others have stated it, but it's pretty much the same thing as logging a find when you were part of a group finding it - and most of us have done that sometime, even if we weren't the one who did the actual find.
  10. http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/ And use the search function here. Try "loading oregon 550"
  11. Do we really need another thread when the old one is still only a page or 2 back?
  12. Hold on a second. You guys are doing this for... free? You guys are nuts. I get paid well to do this! How else would I afford the platinum membership? You guys just aren't looking around in the cache containers well enough.
  13. One of the best aspects of geocaching is exploring new places. Besides doing it while hunting caches, you need to do it for other purposes and in other ways, like finding new places for caches. Whenever I start to think that it's pretty congested cache-wise around here, I just open up google earth and start looking around - there are tons of potential places.
  14. I have gsak running in winebottler, and yes, it works fine. As long as you don't need too many extended features. All I use it for is compiling a pile of gpx files into one big gpx, which I then export as a large gpx file to my desktop, where I load it onto my oregon. The direct usb connection doesn't work, at least the way I have it set up - there are all sorts of device libraries you can add to winebottler when setting it up, but the default set doesn't seem to support usb to garmins. It also crashes if I've got anything running in my optical drive.
  15. FWIW, the program runs fine on my mac.
  16. Once the snake has bit you - you can not be unbit. That is all.
  17. Sounds like you're on the right track. Give it a bit of time, you'll forget about them.
  18. Uh... You are aware that this is an Internet forum, right? You know how those things work, right? One person posts something. Other folks reply to it with their opinions. Sorry. There was a whole level of intended ironical humor in there that a. didn't work or b. you didn't get. Never mind, I don't have anything else clever or intelligent to add to this.
  19. I don't get it. Why is there always a thread where people whine about how others are playing the game? What's the point to it? It's just a game. With fairly open ended rules so that a LOT of people can play it. I'm a pretty strong advocate of using your ignore list as a tool to make geocaching more fun. Many people don't use this valuable tool - learn it, use it, love it!
  20. I run GSAK as a standalone mac app. I used winebottler to turn it into an app. It works well, with some drawbacks, but beats the snot out of rebooting into bootcamp or the quagmire of vmware or parallels.
  21. Don't worry about it. Groundspeak doesn't have a monopoly on the cache hunting thing. Lots of people play these games different ways.
  22. I'm surprised no-one's suggested a beanbag mount. Perfect for multiple vehicle situations. I've had one for ages that I've used in numerous vehicles and it's worked perfectly in all of them. The only problem that I know of is getting one for the oregon - maybe it's easier now, but back when I was an early adopter I had to put one together by ordering 2 different parts. I ordered one of these: http://www.thegpsstore.com/Garmin-Automotive-Navigation-Kit-for-62OregonDakota-Series-P1933.aspx and one of these: http://www.thegpsstore.com/Garmin-bean-bag-mounting-base-ONLY-P421.aspx - kind of a pricey combo, but it does exactly what I want, and hides unobtrusively when not needed. Doesn't leave marks on the windshield.
  23. I gave up on vmware fusion a while ago - it was just too slow, even running XP. Currently have windows 7 running via bootcamp, which is the way to go - fast and works perfectly. But I've stopped using my windows setup for gsak - I set up gsak using winebottler, and now have it as a standalone app on my mac. It mostly works - I can't do a direct usb transfer because I haven't figured out how to make usb work, but it's just a matter of dragging and dropping gpx files once gsak creates them. Of course this might not work for older gps units, but it works with my oregon.
  24. I like them because they're basically the easiest option going, if the price isn't a big consideration. I haven't messed with the free maps that are available, so someone else can comment on those. I don't think the pre-loaded sd card version is transferrable to different gps units easily - I think they get activated for one unit only.
