  1. Or instead of embracing change, just because something changed, examine and expressing your opinion on whether or not the change is good, offers no improvement, or degrades from the status quo. I've examined this, and can't find any problem. Doesn't degrade my caching experience in any way. It shouldn't affect anybody who doesn't like souvenirs - just don't look at them. It's not a big deal. There are easy ways to log caches and not even know you got the souvenirs. Just don't click on that tab over there, and you don't need to know about it. It's not like the challenge cache thing a few years ago, where you couldn't avoid them. I personally like them - they're a cool bonus feature that has really engaged my daughter, who's kind of meh about caching usually. A lot about geocaching.com has changed over the years, but if you yearn for an old school experience, it's still available - you can still do lots of great outdoor caching, using just a gps, no iphones, no souvenirs, no silly trinkets, no lamposts, whereigos, or whatever type of cache you abhor - you just have to make the choice to do that, and do the minimal amount of work to ensure that you get the experience you want. It's all still there.
  2. Why would you want to limit something to just gsak anyway? There are lots of other cache database programs out there, and gsak doesn't even run on many computers. Call it tech 101, and have several kinds of softs and os's represented - it'd get more interest anyway, I'd think. Unless you're in one of those weird boondocks where only PCs are available.
  3. Several of the newer features of gsak won't work in winebottler as far as I can tell. I reverted back to using version 7.7.4 in winebottler, and just using it as a basic database program.
  4. On a corollary note, how can I delete the forums? They're so ugly, and take up too much room on my geocaching homepage. And always full of people whining about silly stuff. Yep, I'm one of those people.
  5. I'm still trying to figure out what "2cd GPS sacrificed to CG..." means.
  6. I didn't know about that - thanks for pointing that out! One can learn new things, at least sometimes. As you may have noticed, I'm a charter member, but don't make it a habit to keep up with every little change that happens to the website, as long as I can make it work for logging caches. A lot has changed over the years! An issue that you may not be aware of is that before there were favorite points, there was years of discussions here about how to adopt some kind of rating system for caches. And also there were/are quite a few offsite rating pages. The current favorite point system is a compromise, and I expect that quite a few people who had different ideas about how to implement it might not be participating in using it the way it turned out.
  7. The whole first post stinks of trolling. How does anyone even know who is awarding favorite points or not? I suppose if one had way too much time on their hands they could monitor a cache or several and see if there's a correlation between the logs and the favorite points, but who's got the time for that? When favorite points were started out, I had some 200 of them added to my account according to my find count at the time. I went through my past finds, and awarded some of those points to the most memorable ones I could think of. Since then I've found maybe 1K more caches, and awarded a pile of favorite points along the way (to ones I thought were worthy!). And know what - I still have some 200 unawarded favorite points. There's no requirement to award these things, you know. One possible presumption of the op is that people are hoarding their favorite points for some nefarious purpose, maybe. Or... maybe they're just not finding caches that they think are worthy of them? Does the OP have a cache that they think is great, but just isn't getting any love? Maybe there's a reason for that?
  8. Pretty sure it was the Red90 advice. You just need to delete the geocaching gpx files from your gps while connected to the computer, make sure you empty the trash on the computer while the gps is still connected, then restart the gps without your geocaching gpx loaded. Then reconnect the gps to the computer, load the gpx file, and restart again. Garmin devices have a fairly lame file and memory handling system, you have to be nice to them to have them work correctly.
  9. This should have been moved to the GPS and Technology forum, not here.
  10. Post this over in the iphone app forum - I'm also surprised it hasn't been updated yet, although things do tend to take a while to get implemented in appland.
  11. ...thank You!!! I was recently told by somebody that ought to know that there are only about 95 of us left that have paid continually since the beginning. That seems low to me, but I have no way of knowing. It wouldn't be hard for the right person to ascertain this - perhaps an inquiry to the right person could be made? Whoever this "right person" might be.
  12. The Montana has been suggested several times. It meets your requirements.
  13. I'm sorry, I misunderstood. I've never used that feature, until now. So I downloaded the kml for one of my lists, opened the download folder, double clicked the kml file which opened google earth, and then all the geocaches were displayed in GE. It works here, on my mac at least. Perhaps this thread will catch the eye of one of GE's fine programmers, who also happens to be a geocacher, who can figure out what your problem is.
  14. There's no way of knowing exactly which one is the 2 millionth one. Geocaches are added and archived by the dozens every second, so the 2M one is just going to sneak in there. I suppose they could kind of arbitrarily pick one, but that wouldn't really be fair, would it?
  15. Maybe you don't understand how the geocaching kml file works. Read the instructions on how to use it carefully. I use it in google earth on my mac, and it works fine, but it sounds like you're in windows, so I won't try to explain things. I don't understand what you mean by double clicking the list in the sidebar - what list? Why double click? What are you trying to do with it?
  16. Looks like low grade spam to me - you've got to buy the ebook to play
  17. We used to have a special icon. For whatever (bad... very bad) reason it was removed fairly recently. Basically I don't think Groundspeak gives a hoot about charter members, as long as we keep paying them. I don't expect to see any of the perks suggested in this thread - they just don't care.
  18. About the found geocaches showing up as unfound - that's just a matter of how you're got your PQ's set up. When setting up your pq's for download, in the pocket query set up page on the geocaching site, in the That (and) box, check the first box, "that I haven't found". (I also check "are not on my ignore list" and "is enabled"). Then your found caches won't be in the pq. Otherwise the 610 is just seeing your founds as fresh geocaches, that just happen to have found logs by you, and a bunch of other people (hopefully). My old staple gps has been an oregon 550t - I've had it for 4 years or so. It works great! I bought my 710 to try it out, as a possible replacement, and while it works well for me and my geocaching, it has a power bug that's common to these units, and I'm back to using my oregon. I don't know if it's "the best", but a lot of people use them. If screen size is important, a Montana might be worth considering. You may also want to wait a bit and see how the newest oregons work for you - the 600/650 line.
  19. There's mac compatible and there's mac compatible. Depends on what you need. First, you don't need VP to log your found caches on the gps as found - you do that entirely from inside the unit. Perhaps you haven't loaded said geocaches as gpx files, in which case no, you can't log them as found because the gps thinks they're waypoints. Second, you can't load aerial view images onto a 610 AFAIK - that's something like Birdseye maps on the garmin units, I don't think there's such a kind of map for magellans. Delorme and Garmin yes, Magellan no. You CAN buy and load routable maps from Magellan. Whether or not you can actually do this without a pc, I don't know. As far as mac compatibility, you can hook up your 610 to your mac, and it'll show up as a drive which you can then load PQ's to, download a list of found geocaches, pictures, etc. As far as running a helper program like VP to hold your hand through all this, no go on that.
  20. Nothing. I have a small pen and leatherman micra in my pocket, and a mini flashlight on my keychain. An iphone in my other pocket. Grab the oregon, we're good to go!
  21. My oregon has gone nude for the last 3 years and is doing fine. These things are designed to take a serious beating with no problems, and mine has endured being dropped countless times, left on the top of the car and driven off (with subsequent return trip to find), getting soaked in water and mud, and bees and spiders and it still looks almost like new. Not even a screen protector.
  22. I have placed one chirp cache. It's probably my least popular cache.
  23. As a mac user for quite some time, I disagree with this strongly, and could actually back it up with a pile of factlike semi-statistics, but will let it go instead. I like you and your posts, no need to get testy over details. I always remember the Lipe Law (I saw Robert Lipe today!) - All gps's suck, just in different ways. (a paraphrase, but pretty close)
