  1. Took me quite a while before I figured it out also. Thats because I didn't ask that quesiton on the forums. Here is the short? answer. From the map page press <menu> <setup map> <menu> <hide City Select North America> <enter>. Repeat the process again except select <show city select> when you want to go back to that map.

One of the biggest complaints has always been that there was no easy quick way to jump between these maps. A toggle button would have been nice.

Thanks, I wasn't going down to the next level of setup.

  2. So, the unit I picked can hold all that information, both the city streets and the topo maps. At least that is good news!

Yes it will. Also something you might consider later on is getting a really high capacity Micro SD card (1 gig or larger) and putting all the maps you will need on it. That way, you don't have to change mapsets every time you decide to take a trip.

Just received a 60CSx with a 1G card and loaded City Select and US TOPO but now I can't figure out how to swith between Select and TOPO.

  3. Yup that is where you do it. Menu, Setup, Heading.... Change it to 0mph or after 90 seconds or some other time period and it will kick on the compass automatically after it has sat at 0mph for 90 seconds.

This is a dangerous, or let's better say: inconvenient setting.

Only under rare circumstances it will stay at 0mph for 90 seconds.

Even under quite good reception conditions it is likely that you will get at least one position in 90 seconds which is far away enough so that the unit will compute a velocity above 0mph (though you have not moved it).

That not only means that the compass will never turn on automatically, but worse: if you turn it on manually with the page key it will turn off itself nearly immediately (because the unit thinks at the next position calculation that you moved).

In the latter case you will not recognize that on the compass page (it will tell you the compass is on, though it turned itself off), but you will see it immediately on the map page (I configured it in a way that the upper side of the map always shows the direction where I go): The map changes immediately to the gps-direction instead of the compass direction.

That drove me crazy at first, because I used a comparable setting than you recommended above, and when I turned the compass on manually, the map changed for one second to the correct direction, and a few seconds later changed back to the (newly calculated) GPS-direction.

It took me a day to recognize what the problem was, and after I changed the setting back to 10mph and 5 seconds, everything was fine.

I feared that the compass would now activate itself when I am walking (because i don't walk with 10mph <_< ), but it doesn't, and so I can conveniently turn it on and off manually with the page key, exactly like I want it.

I just received my 60CSx and I'm a little confused about the advantage of using the compass. Wouldn't I want to rely more on the GPS heading considering the need for it to held level for an accurate compass heading?

  4. Nope, I have version 2.4

Well, I got my replacement 60CSx back today, exactly 7 days from the time I sent it. Boy I felt naked without it...

    Interestingly,

    - The new unit has a serial number over 25,000 higher than my original.

    - As instructed, I sent only the GPSr itself, no data card, no accessories. What I got back was a complete package in the box with GPSr, strap, 64Mb microSD card, Trip & Waypoint CD, manual, USB cable, button & belt clip etc.

    - They even reloaded my waypoints to the new unit.

    - The firmware was Software Version 2.60, GPS SW Version 2.50...my old unit was GPS SW 2.40!!!

    - Amazingly, firmware 2.70 was released today to fix the elevation among other things. I just installed it.

Seems to be working fine so far, time will tell I guess. In spite of some misinformation from tech support, I do have to commend Garmin for their Customer Care. <_<

Anyone else have GPS SW 2.50?

Just received my 60CSx yesterday, same day as firmware update, talk about living right...I updated to 2.70 but I can't find where to check if I have GPS SW 2.40 or 2.50.

    Thanks.

  5. The Thomas Distributing site is very good. Read the Tips section, especially the tip about recharging evey 30 days. I had some new batteries that I left for a few months and they all went completely dead and could not be recharged. Also, the tip on reduced life (charging cycles) for the higher capacities. I am noticing some unusual things on cells from 2400 to 2700 mAH. Some go bad very quickly (one of a pair.) Some new 2700s are taking several recharge cycles to reach higher capacities, the first ones charging quickly and losing power quickly (and this is using a slow smart charger with individual cell sensor/chargers.)

I'll take a look at the Tip section...Thanks!

  6. THIS is a great place to check out the very latest chargers and batteries. Their chargers are somewhat expensive, but with chargers you get what you pay for. Note the batteries at this site, too. They now even have "2900s" giving you about 18% more charge that the "2500s". I've found that the MAHA chargers and the batteries that they sell there are all excellent. I've been using their Power-X batteries for two and a half years and the only problem I ever had was when I put them in another charger (fast charge type). The MAHA MH-C401FS charger unit with the car charger adapter keeps 4 fresh batteries available at all times.

Great info, I'm going on an extended trip to Alaska in June so I could use the extra life of the 2900s.

Thanks, I'm new to this site and geocaching and I can't say enough about the help everyone has been to a newbie.

  7. If you want good results with any rechargable, there's more to it than just keeping them charged. You should group them into pairs (or whatever number is used in a device) and always use, charge, and store them together. For example, I use a felt tip marker and label sets "GPSA", "GPSB", etc. Since they discharge at the same rate during use, and charge at the same rate during charge, both "buckets" always have the same amount of water in 'em. Go to batteryuniversity.com for lots more info.

Good articles photbuff and capt caper.

  8. The energizers found at WalMart are good. They are 2500's and are rated excellent. I've been using them for a year or so and no problems. I do have a charger that offers slow or fast and I always use slow. I bought it at the store that sponsers the battery test.

    See here Battery Test's

Looks like the energizers are the way to go. Keeping them in pairs is a good tip, thanks..

Now the hard hard is waiting for everything to arrive!

  9. If you are going to spend a LOT of your time hiking in the national parks, then the 24K series of maps are excellent. But once you leave the parks, you have no topo maps.

I use the standard Topo software because I'd rather have the whole country than just the national parks.

I'm upgrading to the 60CSx from a Magellen 315 so using cards is all new. Will I swap out the 512 or 1G card when I want to use the 24K info or can I transfer it to the SanDsik?

If you haven't loaded too much onto the 1GB card by all means go ahead and load whatever National Park data you can onto the same card. If you are like most of us and have maxed out your primary card, a secondary, probably smaller card would do nicely when you're in the National Park area.

I think that if I was going to regularly use the NP data, I'd opt for putting it on my primary card to begin with. It's easy enough to toggle between CS/CN, topo, and NP data.

OK, I didn't realize you could toggle between types of maps.

    Thanks

  11. MapSource imposes a limit of 2,025 map segments into any given unit. Although selecting all of the available segments in Topo East only takes up 658MB, it contains over 2,500 map segments. 2,025 segments takes up 480MB of memory, so if you want to go with all Topo, then you'd do well to just get a 512MB card - and you'd still have room for custom POIs and writing the active tracklog to the card.

On the other hand, you're showing interest in the City Navigator software. If you upload maps from both Topo and Navigator products, then memory will be more of an issue rather than the number of map segments.

Be advised that you CANNOT load Nat Geo maps INTO your GPSr! You can only transfer waypoints, tracks and routes using map products other than Garmin's MapSource! In other words, if you want to load maps into your GPSr, you're pretty much stuck with Garmin's MapSource maps.

Thanks for giving me a persepective on the space map segments and. This kind of information is very hard to find.

I was confused about Nat Geo maps. I had heard Garmin pretty much forces you to buy their maps but Nat Geo lists the 60CSx as capatible. They just wern't specific to what part was capatible.

Have you heard anything about City Navigator V8 coming out soon? I thought I saw a post it will be released by June, but I can't find it.

    Thanks again...

  12. I'm looking at buying a 60CSx to use for geocaching and hiking in Alaska and Olympic NP this summer. I plan to get a 1GB SanDisk to load topo maps. What topo maps do you suggest? Garmin's TOPO 24K or National Geographic's TOPO.

Also, it looks like City Navigator V8 is coming out soon. Should I wait for it or get V7 now and gamble on getting a free upgrade?

    Thanks.
