  1. Posting that you received permission to hide a cache is not required to be on your cache page and many (most) owners do not include that information. Do you have a state park near you? There are exceptions, of course, but many state parks are very supportive of geocaching and if you have a good state geocaching association, they will have already worked with your state parks to smooth out any wrinkles. County parks are also usually very receptive to geocaching and are usually large enough to support a good number of them. City parks tend to be smaller so one geocache can saturate the park and leave no room for another. Otherwise, look for walking/biking/hiking trails near you. Those are also very popular places to put geocaches. I would imagine I would still need someone's permission for county parks, city parks, and any type of trails.
  2. Well in that case, then I'll just put the dang thing in my front yard, take that landowners! But for real, there are a number of caches in a public park in my town and nowhere on the description for any of those does it say they received permission and I am guessing my small town doesn't have a policy for or against geocaching. So this leaves me confused. Are all those caches considered against the regulations? Or is it the frisbee rule type of deal? Arghhh.
  3. Not neccessarily. Though a park or other "public property" may allow others to ride, swim, what-have-you, there may still be a policy with their parks and recreation concerning geocaching. If no previously written policy allowing or disallowing geocaching?
  4. Would public property where people are expected and encouraged to gather constitute as a legal hiding place with no prior permission required?
  5. There would be plenty of good spots if it weren't for landowner permission, which I respect. Please tell me I'm wrong, but it appears the only place to hide a cache is in a small public park (which is actually owned and operated by the county, township, or city it's in) or in the middle of the woods somewhere (which is probably owned by someone or some controlling authority anyway). So when attempting to get permission from anyone or any controlling authority, them having never heard of geocaching before and even after explaining and demonstrating, will abruptly deny permission, simply because of liability. Please tell me I'm wrong, because at this point, I don't see anywhere I can hide a geocache without ignoring or never receiving permission. Thanks.
  6. The listing requirements and guidelines were not clear to me in this instance. I have read that a geocache should be labeled as an official geocache and that the original coordinates and GC code should also be labeled on the outside of the container. With some microcaches, I imagine this would be difficult to do and come to think of it, all of the microcaches I have found had no labeling whatsoever on the outside. What's the right thing to do? Thanks!
  7. Also, screwing a cap on TOO tight can distort the O ring and cause it to fail. I think you solved it! I was screwing it in way too tightly and just re-tested screwing it in normally with great results! Thanks!
  8. The micro cache I am using (metal pill container) appears to seal tightly with a rubber seal, but it is not exactly waterproof. I tested it and while not much water got inside after soaking it completely and submerging it, it was enough to dampen and likely ruin the log and stash note. I was wondering if it might be acceptable to place this micro INSIDE of a small, clear ziploc bag for the extra elements protection and hide that? Thanks!
  9. Excellent! That's the exact answer I was hoping for and sort of figured, but wasn't too sure. I also see you are a reviewer for Pennsylvania. You may actually be my reviewer, if so, please look forward to it!
  10. The container was in place, but I went back and removed it, because I believe I should have the land owner's permission first before I place anything on the property or make it possible for others to find the cache on the property. I imagine the permission would be no problem, but the geocache listing requirements and guidelines were a little fuzzy to me.
  11. Hello all, I'm a novice cacher and would like to submit my first hidden cache! I filled out all the necessary information and have it all saved. I've scoped out the location significantly and obtained accurate coordinates. I would just like to receive permission from the land owner before others begin searching. Now my question is, do I submit it for review now with a reviewer note stating that I am just awaiting permission, or do I not submit for review until I receive the actual permission? Thanks in advance!
  12. Thanks for all the input and the warm welcome everyone! I just found my first cache yesterday morning on Halloween! This is a lot more difficult than I originally estimated, as I struggled (and failed) finding 2-3 other caches before finally discovering my first. The biggest thing for me is being watched by muggles, I mean I could look all day in an area for a cache, that's no problem, but if it's in a busy part of town, I don't want the odd looks and possibly the questions to follow! So I have cut my searching sessions pretty short.

    New!

Hello all! My name is Roman and I live in Ellwood City, PA -- it's a small town about 40min. north of Pittsburgh. I graduated from Slippery Rock University in 2011 with a major in Psychology and minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Criminology. Currently working on my master's degree in Criminal Justice and I work part-time as a Correctional Officer at my local county jail. I just recently discovered geocaching and can't wait to get started with this! I love adventuring (even though I do prefer hotels over tents) and it's always a great feeling to discover something that's hidden and all the surprises that go along with it! Any geocachers from my local area or any of you geocaching veterans wish to pass on a few tips or suggestions for a newbie? Thanks fore reading everyone! Looking forward to sharing some great stories with you all!
