  1. Could you explain that procedure a little better, please? Edit: The German forum zip file did not include the "updater.exe", only the "006B073900.rgn" file. I was able to find what I need here
  2. Hello Knollies, Yes, it appears that the "text size" for "map points" affects POIs hard coded into the map and "text size" for "user waypoints" affects the text size for user waypoints AND custom POIs.
  3. I have a Vista HCx and I like it a LOT. But, I agree with others that documentation for the HCx is terrible. Go the the Garmin website and download the manual for one of the discontinued models (either the Vista c or the Vista cx). The earlier manuals were more complete and there are only minor differences that you should be able to figure out. Here's a link to the Vista cx manual http://www8.garmin.com/support/userManual....ct=010-00439-00 Buying the preloaded Garmin micro SD card is not a great deal, IMO. Buying the CD and loading your own maps or using some of the free maps available online is a much better solution.
  4. It would be a nice feature but I do not believe it is possible with the current software/firmware versions.
  5. I think you are confusing "user waypoints" with "custom POIs". A "user waypoint" is a point you mark with your click stick or load into memory as a waypoint. POIs are not "user waypoints". If I'm reading you correctly, you are thinking that map points are the POIs that are already installed on the map. And that is correct. You are also thinking that "user waypoints" are custom POI that you add with POI loader. But, that is not correct. When you load custom POI by using POI loader, they act just like the POIs that are already on the map. Try adding a "user waypoint" by marking a point on the map with your click stick. Do it close by one of your speed trap custom POIs and then try zooming in and out. I think you will find that the map points and speed trap custom POI are visible at 300m and the waypoint you marked with the click stick is visible at 800m.

  8. Dunno if this will help http://forums.ctcachers.com/viewtopic.php?...ight=poi+loader Are you using poi loader? Can you give examples of your custom poi bitmap names and poi file names?
  9. Just bumping this thread. 1NatureMom, did you finish that book or pass it on? I think she still has it. I saw her on Saturday at my Hanging Around Whitestone rappelling event (GC177JW) and should have asked her about it then. In any case, she hasn't passed it on to me.
  10. Is there a difference between the attributes available for a cache verses the attributes available for an event? I would like to add the "Climbing Gear" attribute for this event, but it doesn't seem to be available. Can we get it added?
  11. And here's some quotes from an unnamed state Department of Environmental Protection website: "Description: The letterbox lies in the xxxxxx of the xxxxxx State Forest, within the town of xxxxx. This letterbox is the only one located along the Appalachian Trail! The hike is approximately 4,000 feet, one way (3,550 feet is on a state forest road. The remaining few hundred feet is on and adjacent to the Appalachian Trail.)...... Continue up the main road another 2,450 feet (a little under a half-mile) to the point where the AT crosses the road. You will see the white-painted blazes on either side of the road, marking the trail, as well as a wooden backpacker sign. Take a left onto the trail and do what hundreds of “thru-hikers” do for 5-6 months of their lives annually: Follow the white blazes! You are now on the Appalachian Trail..... The total distance to the letterbox from the AT is about 95 feet. Note that this hiding spot can collect rainwater, so be sure to keep the letterbox securely bagged. Also, help us by covering it a little with leaves to hide it from someone who might accidentally stumble across it." 'Course it probably is not the only letterbox located along the AT. But, it's the only one that was PLACED and is maintained by the State DEP. Wonder if they got a request to remove it from the NPS
  12. I definitely would NOT use carbide. While very hard, it's not very tough and tends to shatter with impact. Glass is hard, but not tough Leather is tough, but not hard. A cold chisel is hard AND tough Got it? A replaceable metal tip (even unhardened steel) would be fine. When it wears, just pop in a new one. Things that are too hard (even case hardened steel) feel like they "skate" over rock
  13. Whoa, THAT'S funny. Whoever did that, thank you for the smilie today
  14. This is weird. I can't get to that screen at all on my Vista HCx. On the startup screen there is NO mention of Mediatek or Bravo. I'm completely missing that line "Copyright MediaTek 2007". I haven't seen the drift issue everybody is talking about. I can get to a quasi diagnostic screen from the trip computer page by cycling the click stick to N, E, S and W.
  15. The Merigold was my first GPS and, as mentioned by others, was probably the best handheld ever made by Meridian. I found my first couple hundred caches with it. It has a 500 waypoint limit, of which only the first 200 can have notes. That can be problematic for some folks. It works best, IMO, if you also have an SD Card (about 1gB) for maps and waypoints. Mine always got good reception. The firmware is a bit dated and hasn't been updated recently so it may not pick up the newer WAAS satellites. Shouldn't be much of a problem for caching, though. Many cachers turn off the WAAS on their GPSrs. Did you get any mapping software (Mapsend DirectRoute or Topo)? My ex-boss had one too and, not being too tech-savvy, I made a "cheat sheet" for him that had most of the common tasks. It's a Word doc but could be a pdf. PM me if you want a copy.

  17. Yes to both. It's the internal memory that's limited. Even the maps don't get fully loaded into internal memory. The Merigold reads what it needs from the SD card in the case of maps. Unfortunately, that is not the case with waypoints and you have to manually load/unload them. I used a 256 or 512 mB card with my Merigold. I know some folks used 1gB and I've heard some have used 2gB. Don't know what the max size card is. But, the waypoint files are simple comma deliminated text files and you can fit a LOT of them on a modestly sized card. It's the maps that take up card space. The waypoint text files have no file extension and should be stored on the root of the card - not in a sub folder. Also, an individual file can have MANY waypoints, though I tried to keep each limited to about 100. If you opened one of those waypoint files with notepad, you'd see something like these lines which represent two individual waypoints: $PMGNWPL,4030.751,N,07620.792,W,0000000,M,501SHLTR,SHELTER,*14 $PMGNWPL,3519.457,N,08335.406,W,0000000,M,A RUFUSM,SHELTER,*16 They are shelters on the Appalachian Trail. Eventually, when you lean more about them, you can edit that text if desired and re-save your file.
  18. The problem is not with GSAK. It's with the 200 waypoint limit on your Merigold. True, the Merigold actually has a 500 waypoint limit. But only the first 200 can have comments. And therein lies your problem. When I was using my Merigold, I would send waypoints to the GPS SD card in blocks of about 100 per file. Use the GSAK filters to select about 100 waypoints and then export them to the Merigolds SD card using GSAK > File > Export > Magellan Explorist and SD card. Give your files unique names. You can load or unload those files as necessary to keep under the 200 waypoint limit. As an example, say you make four quadrants around your home: NE, NW, SE, SW - each containing about 100 waypoints. You could go caching to the North East of your home or the North West of your home, etc. Your SD card would have 4 files named NE, NW, SE, SW each containing 100 waypoints. To load Waypoints from SD Card to Merigold internal memory Menu > Card Utilities > enter > Load WP/Route > enter > (select waypoint file) > enter To clear waypoints from Merigold internal memory Menu > Setup > enter > Clear Memory > enter > Wpts/Routes > enter > Yes > enter Try to load only the waypoints files you need. You would stay below the 200 waypoint limit and then your autoroute street names would show correctly
  19. So, even though they were there searching first you would simply ignore their wishes if they said "no"? I thought the OP was asking about etiquette? Why would you even ask to begin with if you had no intention of honoring their wishes? Did I misunderstand your intent? To the OP: The times I've run into another cacher, I've always asked if they mind if I join them. I've never had anyone refuse (although, so far it hasn't happened on a FTF hunt) If I find it first, I move away and, after a few minutes of further "searching" I announce that I found it and ask if they want to know where it is. Sometimes they want to find it themselves, other times they just say "ok, where is it?" If they find it first and ask me, I usually opt to keep looking until I find it myself. Though sometimes I've had people "cough" when I was real close.... ;-)
  20. Upgrade to ver 2.5.2.0 http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=927 and select "Custom Folder (Advanced)" on the second page. Excellent! I was obviously using a previous version. Downloading 2.5.2.0 now. Thank you!
  21. Anybody know if there is a way to use the Garmin PIO Loader to export the resultant poi file to a folder on the hard drive? I can send it to GPSr in "mass storage mode" and I can send it to a USB card reader, but don't see a way to send to a folder on my hard drive. Reason: sometimes on the road I want to remote desktop into my home pc to retrieve latest PQs in GSAK. I can run the script to load cache data into cachemate and transfer it to where I am. But, unless there is an SD card connected to my home pc, I can't do this with POIs.
  22. Doubt it. Look at what the other folks who found the cache on August 9 wrote in their profile. "Right now we do not have our own GPSr because the graduate student budget is tight so we cache with my dad (handycapt)." Well, I would agree with that about him getting caught. As for contacting the sheriff, handycapt has threatened to do that but the CO was asked to do that by the sheriff and therefore has legitimate reason. If I was CO, I think I would contact the sheriff as requested, but also mention handycapt's behavior/threats. I would point out that this is a game, that there was adequate permission to place the cache and that it conforms to Groundspeak's caching guidelines. No one cares that the cache does not meet handycapt's guidelines and he has no business threatening legal action. I suspect the sheriff will be smart enough to recognize who is the wack job.
  23. Here's one that is at the intersection of two projected lines X Marks the Spot GCVR16
  24. I've heard of some people using magnets salvaged from old hard drives. I think they might put the magnets on the inside of the box instead of gluing them to the outside. I suppose you could put the magnet under the camo tape. Here's some links that may be helpful Thread on using glue magnets and glue Painting loc-n-locs I mask off a small area on top of the lid before painting. After painting, I remove the masking tape and tape a "Geocache" label on the INSIDE of the lid so that it shows through the non-painted area of the lid and is protected by the clear plastic. I don't bother with making a camo pattern. Krylon Fusion flat black, dark brown or some other earth tone works well. The paint gets scratched up over time but this just seems to add to the camo.
