  1. Since water getting into cache containers can be such a problem, I was thinking. Assuming the area the cache is in won't flood or puddle, what if you put several holes in the bottom of the container to drain any water that does come in. I think this would work, but does anyone have an real world experiences with this?
  2. I had an idea that I hope very much you can use and implement. With the starting of rumblings of geocaching bans in various areas, I think it would be a great idea to have a list of the people that voluntarily follow the creed. It would require a little form, and a simple database, but I think it would be worth it. Then when stuff like South Carolina happens we can at least show the creed, show how many of the geocacher communtiy follows such codes of conduct. A great feature would be to have the database sorted by city, state, country and such. So that when someone visits, say the city council, or the park wardens, they can have only local names. As for information, I would collect whole name, address, email, screen name at GC.com, etc, and have them understand that thier info might be used in various geocaching causes, like in South Carolina. Then Council members could contact the people on the list, should they choose. Just an idea, I think it's implemetable, and could do alot of good if done. Does anyone agree, have any ideas, and anyone willing to help make this a reality?
  3. It's an interesting idea, although it would only work as a service provided by a resort or hotel at a huge tourist area. But a big thing would be hiding and finding only your own caches, not just picking caches at random from GC.com. As you can see, people will get mad if you make money off thier work. I had another business idea though. You know how huge paintball areas are set up. Why not a similiar area for geocaching? You could even add some more urban parts. I think it's an interesting idea, but I don't know if it would make money.
  4. We bring our camera with us, so viola! Extra room for batteries, and lots of cool pictures of caches and other misadventures.
  5. Even if someone else is gun-ho about bumping up thier number of finds, so what? This isn't a competition. If you have 5, and someone else has 1000, big deal? If I'm out, finding caches it doesn't matter how many finds I have. If someone hunts for cheap, easy, poorly hidden caches just to bump up thier numbers, what do I care? I am proud of my finds, I don't have 1000, but I've enjoyed each and every one. That's what's important. And hey, if someone enjoys finding cheap, easy, poorly hidden caches, so what. If they are enjoying the game, good for them. Let like minded people find their caches, and I will find and hide worthwhile caches of my own.
  6. I justify my DNF with my mommy made me stupider then everyone else
  7. Hello and welcome to Geocachers Anonymous. Come on in. Introduce yourself, tell us how long you've been geocaching, and tell us why you belong in GA. I'll start. Hello, my name is Terry. I've been geocaching since the 17th of April, and I belong in GA because a cloudy day makes me weep uncontrollably.
  8. Problem solved: We wage an unholy war on the muggles of the earth. And we will be victorious I tell you! Unless they find out bases on the geocaching.com website. Plus all the swag we have to buy for our base caches will depete some of the money that should go to weapons. But when we wipe out the muggles, it'll be all caching, all the time, everywhere!!! Muhahahaha
  9. It all depends on how high up the GPS satalites are. The more into the earths magnetic field they are the more protected. However, if they are in danger, the satalites will be turned off, so they don't get damaged. I have not heard this happen, although I could be wrong. All in all, I am of the opinion that CME are of no consequence to GPS satalites. The exception being huge ones, like last year, that have the power to even knock out ground electrical systems. That's my opinion, anyone know for sure though?
  10. I don't see the big deal. You emailed the owner, that's enough. He's the one that placed it, it's his problem. If he does nothing, it's no skin off our noses.
  11. There is something on the geocaching.com front page, most of the way down. But I think that's how many have logged a cache in a certain time period. Although it does bring up an interesting thought. I would like to see some more stats, I'm a stat freak. Number of active caches, total caches since the site started, total members, number of logs, peak number of logs in a day, and all sorts of other useless info.
  12. No second account, just this one. The caches were: "Cache with a view" (GCMZM6) the log date is January 14 and the log is by gargath (I do have this cache on my watchlist, but I wasn't even signed up in Jan. Proposed earlier it could be a late logging.) "Winter Wonderland 2" (GCM0G4) the log date is May 23 by jeepand5kids (This cache was on my watchlist, but hasn't been since the 15th or so) If there is a bug in the system, I hope this helps.
  13. This could be easily explained. If someone just got around to logging a forgotten January find (and backdated it to the actual date) you would certainly get the e-mail. Sometimes it's a new Cacher account by someone that had previously been included in their parents logs. When they get older they often want to create their own identity and record. All backdated of course. You could easily receive logs that seem years out of date, instead of merely months. Could be, although this cacher isn't new or anything, but maybe they were just logging the find now. Why an experienced cacher would be logging a find this late, I don't know, but it's possible. I think it's more likely it's a bug in the system personally though. I'm not a premimuim member, so I don't have bookmarks, not that I know of anyways.
  14. The last two days, I've gotten errors in the emails I've gotten from the watchlist. One was a cache on my watchlist, but it was a find from January, before I even signed up and started geocaching! The other is from a cache that was found recently but the cache hasn't been on my watchlist for sometime now. Anyone else getting this? Does GC.com know, and/or are fixing them?
  15. One way to test how accurate your GPS is is by using an absolute standard for comparision. IN the US we have "Benchmarks" surveying markers that the government uses. Maybe in the UK, you have something similar? Find a marker, compare what your gps says with what the marker is or says.
  16. because it doesn't have WAAS to hone the error box down. It's less accurate then the new ones with WAAS. I don't want to get a new one, too cheap, and the model doesn't allow updating to get WAAS.
  17. I'm planning on doing my first cache hide soon. However my gps is old, and I am not sure how to get the most accurate coordinates for posting. Any tips.
  18. That would work, that or have a key in the decrypted text, instead of "A" = "N" you could put a little note in the hint for the second layer saying that "A" equals whatever you want it too. Each letter would then be offset. They then would have to decrypt the second hint manually. I for one, don't look at the hint unless I absolutely can not find the cache at all. So I want them to be pretty exact.
  19. and does anyone have an example letter to send? Something that won't make me seem like a pushy jerk?
  20. if I understand it correctly, it's like a geocaching phone book?
  21. I have a couple people holding a couple of my bugs. They have had them since may 3 and may 8th. One hasn't done any caching since, and the other has found one. I want to email them and see whats up. I realize that people get busy, etc, and don't want to push them, but at the same time, I don't want them to forget my bugs. What is a reasonable time to wait before emailing them? What should I say? Anyone have a form letter that doesn't sound like it's pushy?
  22. Let's see if he's still saying that 20-30 years from now!!!
  23. Well, sucks to be me. No 5/5's within 100 miles of me. Can I join the club if I pay 15 5 dollar bills?
  24. I love the idea of making a cemetery a virtual cache. Someone mentioned all the old ones that aren't even taken care of anymore. Make it a virtual, list coordinates of interesting graves, do research and list facts on the cache page. I don't think it would be a bad thing to have most if not all graveyards listed. Ask those that visit to bring a flower and pull some weeds. This whole SC thing started (as I understand it) because someone found one of our caches that found it offensive. Why do the damage (and eventually damage will be done) to the yard, and why give opponents ammo?? Virtuals won't hurt us; and we have SO many other places to put regular caches.
