  1. I use mine for caching when the kids and I can escape. Not as often as I would like. This unit is great.
  2. Battery saver mode will affect your accuracy in a situation with marginal signal. Because it only polls the sat. every 5 seconds. This can make a bigf difference if you are getting poor reception to begin with.
  3. I got the V based on a number of peoples comments on it being a great all around unit. It does blue charts, it route, etc.The only thing that it doesn't do is float but you can't have everything.Anyway routing was cool but I didn't think I would use it that much. But after my first trip with this unit into parts unknown, I am hooked. Watching the little maps on the screen is fairly hard to do when you are driving at least if don't want to run into oncoming traffic.Having the unit beep at you and show you the next turn is terrific. Also if you get off course some where , it will auto recalculate the best route from where you are. Can't do that with a preloaded route. I have used mine in the wood for hiking quite a bit and have never had trouble getting sat lock as long as you remember ant. orientation.(pointed upheld in front of you). Its a great unit Cat-n-the-hat
  4. Just checked the garmin site and a new beta version is out for the V. 2.09 beta was posted on the 13th. Haven't had time to us it yet. Looks like they have added another game(what a waste of time)I would rather that they work on giving us the option to note download poi's to our V Or maybe even select which type of poi's get loaded. cat-n-the-hat
  5. If you don't have the detailed city select maps or the maps you are using don't have all the roads in the area you are traveling it will take you back to the main route because that may be the only road that it has info on to do auto routing.
  6. If that is the measurement of how far you are above sea level. Then yes it does on the compass page. The number of feet above sea level is figured out using sats.
  7. I found it under the software update page linked from their home page. just a few minutes ago, so it must be back.
  8. check out the northwest forum under "park district approval". The Thpr has a Parks person who seems to be active in caching and a great help.
  9. Is it just me or would it be nice to have our gpsr temp. disable waas corrections while our V calculates or recalculates routes. Waas seems to really slow down route calculations to a dead crawl. esp during off route recalculations. My V takes forever during these off route recalcs with waas on, but if I do the same off route recalc with waas off it only takes seconds. It sure would be nice to have an option to temp disable waas corrections during a route calc and then have it automaticly start waas corrections after the recalc is done. cat-n-the-hat
  10. Just a thought do you have it in battery saver mode. My came out of the box that way. I quickly turned that feature off after reading posts about how it can affect sat lock under trees. Since the unit only updates every 3-5 seconds instead of every second. cat-n-the-hat
  11. sorry didn't work the first time

  13. I forgot to mention this in previous post the base map built into the V will do an ok job navigating on major highways between cities. In my area I have Portland loaded and also seattle/tacoma loaded and use the base map for the area in-between since I only drive the major highway between those two cities. Cat-n-the-hat
  14. I was able to get flint south to tecumseh and alittle west of lancing thru detroit into 18.2 meg using cityselect 4.01. Couldn't get to the ohio boarder though because the next map south of tecumseh went way over the boarder into Ohio. It sure would be nice if there was an option to remove poi when down loaded to our gpsr so we could squeeze more map in.(I sent an email in july to garmin cartography about this already). Also you might be able to squeeze more maps in by using a combo of city select and metro guide maps depending on the detail you need. Both maps sets will allow for the V to do street navigation. I do this where I live because some of the metro guide maps are small in size(but offer less detail) and I use those in areas I don't need the detail in. Hope this helps. Cat-n-the-hat
  15. Thanks for the replies. I just realized that during the 2.08 update that WAS got turned on and that really slows down the routing calculations. I have never seen a need for it while navigating so I leave it off and only turn it on if available when looking for caches... etc. Thanks cat-n-the-hat
  16. Ever since I installed 2.08 on my Garmin V I have noticed that when I go off route the gps fails to recalculate a new route or takes forever to come up with a new route. It didn't seem to do this before the upgrade. Has anybody else noticed this? Cat-n-the-hat
  17. I believe the japanese models use different model numbers. but they are the same model. I use a 615c but in japan I believe it is referd to as 600c Cat-n-the-hat

  19. I have a garmin V. I have used it for dirt bike riding all summer haven't had any trouble with it. No shut offs or anything. I did get a touratech mount for my handle bars for vibration damping. It works great cat-n-the-hat
  20. I see this also in 2.07 it seems to happen at the boarders between the base map and mapsource maps that you have loaded in to your unit. It only seems to happen when you are at a zoom level that is greater than the base map will handle(overzoomed). but the moment you cross into the base map area the cross hatching goes away. I guess its the "V's" way of letting me know I am about to move outside the area where I have downloaded maps for.
  21. The files have really gotten a lot larger some of it seems to be from more mapping but there is also at least 3x the amount of poi. Surely the is some industrious person out there who could whip out a program the could strip the poi info off of the garmin files?
