  1. If it's not too late, I would like my avatar to be considered. I would love to show up my brother (jeff35080). My avatar is much better than his. "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  2. My brother and I found one of the oldest in Alabama today DH2455. We are not sure if it is the oldest in the state but it must be close. The original point was placed as an old beer bottle in 1887. In 1939 some concrete was crudely placed on the bottle and a disk set in its place stamped 1887. Jeff35080 will be posting pics later this evening. We were certainly pumped to discover this one as well as a 1939 reset 62.2 feet from the 1887 disk. "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  3. The flagging was orange and was tied to trees through the woods. Does being tied to trees mean anything significant? I have also noticed flagging nailed into the ground. Is that just a way to keep the flagging place? "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  4. Since I have gotten into benchmark hunting I have become, let's say, overly aware of survey flagging. I have a fw questions regarding survey flagging: 1. Is there any significance to flagging color? I have seen orange, pink, red, blue, and green. Do the colors represent anthing or is it just whatever ther surveyor picked up at the store? 2.Today I was riding my ATV at a popular area near my home. I observered rows and rows of fresh flagging through the woods. The flagging was in lines that I assume denotes property lines. Can anyone speculate why the flagging was in rows like this through the woods? Thanks! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  5. I recently found a Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) marker on a large bridge over a river near my home. It is stamped with the year (1978) and states that it is a Station Marker. Is theis the same thing as a benchmark or is it a ACE "signature" marker? "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  6. Sattalights, huh? My teachers would have given me a -5 for spelling. "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  7. I also use the default crosshair symbol for benchmarks and The Skull and Crossbones for caches. Choos! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  8. I agree with surveytech and webling. As an avid benchmark hunter i enjoy the hunt but dome of the desriptions written almost 55 years ago are not alot of help today. Some are right on with lat/long coordinates and some are not. Those that are not can usually be found with the help of the desriptions. Updated desriptions or accurate logging should be encouraged. "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  9. I plan to cache/benchmark hunt today and the high supposed to be 27F. That's darn cold for the middle of the day here in the Heart of Dixie. I'll be sure to wear my down jacket. Cache on! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  10. I also received my rebate yesterday but it was from Sam's Club. It only took 4 weeks from time of submission. I was pleasantly surprised. Can we now send it for the $30 rebate from Magellan? "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  11. I could not find anything on this subject in my searches so here goes..Has it ever been propsed that we could have a place on My Cache Page to log benchmarks that we have found and documented that were not in the NGS database? I think this would be beneficial. I have found several local benchmarks and logged them with the data on the disk and the lat/long. Any ideas on this one? "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  12. I really like the card CR N Siisy came up with. I would be VERY interested in some of those. My only "2 cents" worth would be to change Global Satellite System to Global Positioning System to be accurate. Again, I love the fomat and layout and would be interested in the cards themselves or the file so I could make my own! Cache on! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  13. I have found several, what I am calling local, BM's on older bridges in the central AL area. I found 2 today. Here is an example of one of them: "Jefferson County Benchmark BM3998". I marked the spot and the searched this site for BM's closest to these corordinates but found nothing. Will Local BM's be in the database? "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  14. I have also seen these in the format of a large V which I assume is pointing to a specific spot. I recently noticed in my ATV riding some stakes on either side of the trail labeled 'Picture Point' with a big plastic X across the trail. The are did not seem fit for aerial photography because of tree cover but I assume that has to be what it's for. "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  15. Good one Rog. As far as the rods I have found I would say that they are closer in resemblence to rebar. No caps or etchings. Rarely there will be an old pice of orange survey ribbon tied on. "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  16. In my hunting I have run across a few metal rods driven in the ground. Some were properly marked and those were typically in a concrete monument or in a covered cylinder in the ground. What about the others I have found that are not marked? I have searched by zip code and can't find them. Could the be corner markers for property or just some random alien rod placement? "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  17. I recently found a virtual cache. I emailed the owner, like I was supposed to, to tell them the right info about the site. I never received a response from them (it's been about 3 weeks). I logged the virt anyway because I knew I was at the right spot. Shouldn't a person be responsible enough to respond to fellow cachers when a virt is placed with specific instructions? I don't want to list the name because I feel that's inappropriate but the next cacher to the spot may not know they are in the right spot and need the confirmation from the owner. Cache on! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  18. I also have a SM. I like the user interface and that the keys are on the front of the unit. I like the features and the ease of uploading new map regions. I recently upgraded my firmware to 4.03. I highly reccommend you do so. It gives you even more features. Cache on! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  19. I recently was searching for an address on my SM in an uploaded region. I found the address I needed but instead of selecting VIEW I selected OK. By doing this it has now permanently placed this address in my 'Nearest To' feature of the User database. Is there a way to clear this without clearing the memory of the unit? It is not a huge deal but it does clutter things a bit. Let me know if there are any ideas on this one. Choos! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  20. I may be moving to South Florida, specifically the greater Ft Lauderdale area (Sunrise), my late summer. Are there any active geocachers that I could email chat with about the sport in the area and about the area in general? "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  21. South of Bham (Chilton County) here. I think a get together would be a great thing for geocachers in the area. Keep me informed!! "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine."
  22. I am about to place my 1st actual cache but there is a great possibilty of a virtual cache near my place of employment. Are virtual caches true to the sport. I have found 1 virtual cache and I logged it. I think they can be fun if they are worth traveling to. Please give me your opinions. "What tha hell?" Hank Hill
  23. 2 weeks ago I called Magellan on their toll free number. I was put in a queue and told my max wait time was 3 minutes. I held for approximately 10 minutes. The a recording came on to tell me no one was available (duh) and to leave a messsage. I left a message with all pertinent info but never received a call back. Next I emailed cutomer support through their website. I ststed that I had called but no one called me back. I never received an email response. I like the Magellan product I have but the customer service, in my opinion, sucks! If it wan't for this forum, I guess I'd be SOL. I can get all the help I need here. Has anyone else experienced this with Magellan? "What tha hell?" Hank Hill
  24. Does the SporTrak have these codes? "What tha hell?" Hank Hill
  25. So my uploaded topo lines are the best measure? If so, I will rely on them when on Earth. I will guess that I am close when flying. I know that cabin pressure, atmospheric pressure, etc greatly affects altitude. "What tha hell?" Hank Hill
