  1. I always put my email address on the outside of the cache. That way, if anyone's concerned, they can contact me without having to open it. SimonG.org - now with added blog!
  2. Hi Sparticus, When you go to log a cache visit, there are some radio buttons where you can select 'Found' or 'Not Found', so you can still log your adventure without saying that you found the cache. Saying that you found it when you didn't can cause problems, because people see the smiley face and assume the cache is still there, when in fact it might not be. SimonG.org - now with added blog!
  3. As soon as I can get satellite lock in my living room, I'll post the coordinates... SimonG.org
  4. My ideal cache takes the best part of a day to complete, takes me to an interesting location (there's that word again), involves lots of challenging puzzles I have to solve, and provides plenty of opportunity for entertaining misadventures. I find the cache and make it home alive, but only just. I agree with Pharisee - there should be more hard caches. Easy ones are too, er, easy. SimonG.org
  5. I think I see the problem. Kenmore NY is at N42 57.750 W78 52.120. From there to N42 57.750 E78 52.120 is 6357.7 miles. It sounds like you've got the right numbers in GPXView, but east instead of west. SimonG.org
  6. quote:Originally posted by el10t:If you tinyurl your tinyurl'ed url, and keep doing that you keep getting a tinyurl of the same length as the first tinyurl'ed url. However, when you browse to it you get an error However, this: http://tinyurl.com/782w is a TinyURL of a Tinylink of a TinyURL of a Tinylink of a TinyURL... which works perfectly. SimonG.org
  7. quote:Originally posted by Lance Ambu:Now if you could tell me how to do that in my cache description page I will love you forever Hmm... well, I'll tell you the answer anyway. Edit the page, make sure the 'Yes. I am supplying the HTML.' box is ticked, and put something like this in the description: Important information And you'll end up with something like this: Important information You'll also need to add at the end of each paragraph, or it will all run together. SimonG.org
  8. quote:Originally posted by el10t:Sorry if this is a basic question, but what is tinylink? TinyURL The site doesn't seem to be working at the minute, but basically you give them a URL and they give you a short one which redirects to it. F'rinstance, http://tinyurl.com/60u7 takes you to a Google search with a massive URL. EDIT: The site seems to be back now. SimonG.org
  9. quote:Originally posted by The Wombles: quote:Originally posted by SimonG:Seems to me they're judging us on whether we stick to a rule that hasn't been implemented yet. We shouldn't be introverted in considering if this is a rule or not, but think about what is acceptable to such landowners. It's their land, so they'll decide if they want people leaving food there. If we want an approval then we have to comply. Oh absolutely. I just meant that they seem to be assuming we'd break their rules as to what we can place on their land on the basis that people don't always stick to the current guidelines. I can see their point, but I don't think it's a legitimate comparison, and I'm pretty sure they're wrong. SimonG.org
  10. I've never placed food in a cache, but I don't believe there's a hard and fast rule against it. It's mentioned in the Guide to Creating and Hiding a Cache (the key word being 'guide'), but not in the Cache Listing Requirements. If it wasn't allowed, cache pages which say 'contains ' would never be approved. Seems to me they're judging us on whether we stick to a rule that hasn't been implemented yet. SimonG.org
  11. You mean like this? As well as multiple hard copies, I did a virtual version similar to what Rasstag suggested, but instead of URLs you get passwords to pull the chapters out of a zip file. That way, people with a laptop can do it the virtual way without needing web access. SimonG.org
  12. I've recently started using an excellent program called The Proxomitron, which lets you set up html filters. I reckon it could be used to remove posts by specified users. SimonG.org
  13. Sounds like you're almost there. First, go back into your 'Modify your account' page and enter your password so the change you're about to make gets saved. Then scroll down to 'Photo (JPG files only)' (the same place you went to upload your pic). There's a dropdown listbox on the right which should contain the name of your image. Select it, click on the 'Modify your account' button at the bottom of the page, and you're done! SimonG.org
  14. Crikey, everyone's saying nice things about me! For a nasty moment there I thought I must have died... Here's the log by MarcB that lathama mentioned above. He's right, it's highly amusing! SimonG.org
  15. quote:Originally posted by Morseman:Just tried to get a copy, to make up some cards to leave in caches, but all I get is a blank page. Has the logo moved please? No, but it's rather big! If your browser doesn't auto-resize, you'll just see the corner of the image. If you scroll, you should see it. Alternatively, try this smaller version. SimonG.org
  16. If anyone wants a high resolution version of the logo, you can get it here. SimonG.org
  17. quote:Originally posted by geomania:BTW, would blocking on the IP address work? I wondered about the same thing. The only solution I can see is to have people enter their GC username when they vote. It's still not completely foolproof, but it would help. 'Course, Mark's poll software probably doesn't allow for such a thing, so it's a moot point. It's just a pity this is something we even need to discuss. Oh, and it wasn't me either - as one of the entrants, I kinda feel like a prime suspect! SimonG.org
  18. quote:Originally posted by Mudplugger:Is it possible the latest flash runtime may need to be installed to view this correctly ? I just installed the latest version of Flash, and it works! Thanks! I'm off to play with it now and see what everyone's been getting so excited about... SimonG.org
  19. There are a few 5/5s around, but don't expect prize money! At GeocacheUK.com you can see a list of all UK caches which you can sort by difficulty/terrain. SimonG.org
  20. quote:Originally posted by el10t:Some might argue otherwise but I consider myself a "real statitician" (at least that's what my job title is!) Your job title is Real Statistician? Does that mean you have colleagues who are Imaginary Statisticians? SimonG.org
  21. quote:Originally posted by Daisy&me:Now that we have a winner, can you tell me if there will be any restrictions on the use the logo? Copyrights or whatever? Well, I designed number two, and I hereby hand over all copyright to Mark. It's up to him what restrictions he places on its use. SimonG.org
  22. quote:Originally posted by Kouros:My profile page says that I have been a _Charter Member_ since April 2002 (when I only paid my dues today), and I only joined the sport in April 2002... It does that. It should really just say 'Member since'. SimonG.org
  23. quote:Originally posted by Pooter:ps - how do you do quotes? Like that. Or, for a more helpful answer, you can do it in three ways. a) Click on the above the post you want to reply to. Click on the in the Instant UBBCode section of the Post A Reply page c) Do it manually, like this: [ONION]Painted the bath red, and was delighted with the result.[/ONION] replacing the word ONION with QUOTE. SimonG.org
  24. It doesn't seem to work for me. I say No to a couple of "Do you want to abort the script?" messages and it seems to load. I get to the point where I can zoom in and out and scroll around, but no caches are displayed. Which makes it a bit pointless really. SimonG.org
  25. I wonder whether even well-hidden caches are sometimes discovered by being heard. I've had a big pile of the Hornet's ammo boxes in my living room for the last couple of months, and quite often (I think when the temperature's changing) they like to make noises. If you're walking through the woods and you hear a log go PING!, you're gonna investigate. Having said that, I'd be very surprised if this accounts for more than a tiny proportion of accidental finds. SimonG.org
