  1. I heard the egg thing on Paul Harvey today. HE said that NASA has also received an alternator off a chevy and several mud-flaps from a Peterbuilt Truck. I know some of these people want to help but can you say "shallow end of the gene pool" Cachercarry Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches
  2. Thanks for the information. We just bought 40 acres in Lawrence County. It has several creeks and small waterfalls & rock formations. I can personally say that this part of TN is beautiful. Cachercarry Lane & Joy Smith Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches
  3. Just a note to all interested. There was an article printed in our local (Jackson, MS) paper about geocaching. Archiedh & Supersquid are "Stars". I was the finder in the article, The cache was a fun find and I'm glad I didn't step on my crank while finding it. 4. I am looking for a new GPS and need some opinions. I would like to find a unit that can be set to read out in feet only. My Mag-315 will only read feet when the mileage to the waypoint drops below .1mi. I am also looking for opinions on best units for accuracy (WAAS?) and use under tree cover. I am not brand specific since I have or have owned units from the big three. I have looked at specs on the sites till I'm crosseyed. I hope that there's a unit out there that meets my needs. Thanks Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches
  5. I think that I can make this meeting, Lord willing and the river don't rise. If the weather looks good we might even tote the camper to Paul Johnson State park. Cachercarry Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches
  6. Well guys, I guess I need to figure out how to get the time to start chasing the leaders. If my customers will quit breaking stuff on the weekends, I might get time to at least make a respectable showing. I haven't seen a green ammo box in several weeks now and my palms are starting to get hairy I need to cache more and sleep less. 7. I drove back from Houston this morning and crossed thru the middle of LA getting back to Jackson. I didn't see much rain. Although Winnsboro aparently got beat up. I didn't see many trees or limbs down. Went right past the Kisahatchie NF and didn't see any damage or high water. Maybe they will open up the campground. Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches

  11. I am, like UMC, new to Geocaching. This is what I see. A newbie that is excited as a kid in a candy store. Anxious to talk to anyone who will listen to his chatter. I personally know this feeling and I don't see it as a big problem. Once the new wears off, I believe UMC will be a valuable contributor to this sport. This is my personal opinion. Pipedreamer has some legitimacy to his complaint, but maybe understanding is the rule of the day. Yes some of the posts may seem inane but remember, we have all been considered an annoyance to someone at some time in our lives. UMC has been informed of this and I personally am satisified at this point with open & free speech and self policing on this forum. More rules imply more beauracracy and ultimately a loss of some personal freedom. Let this thing run it's course and see what happens. Remember, if it is offensive to you the delete key is your best defense. Lane Smith Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches

  13. OK, I know that this topic has been beat to death but I want some specfic opinions. After discussing the merits of containers with fellow cachers I have developed a container protocol that I hope makes sense. If I am placing a cache in the woods away from civilization I would perfer a ammo can. It is waterproof & durable. If I am placing an urban cache or one in somewhat close proxmity to civilization I would use a clear container to help avoid a possible "Bomb Scare" or other difficulties. Also I personally don't like garbage bags to wrap caches in but I have seen several camo bags in my area and have a better view on them. Any opinions pro or con? 14. I live south of Jackson, MS and am within 35mi of Vicksburg, And even closer to Raymond, Edwards(Champion Hill), and within 40 min of Port Gibson. I travel the state extensively and would be glad to help on a virtual cache. Lane & Joy Smith Jackson, MS Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches
  15. I asked Buck8point in the monday night chat if MS cachers could crash the party. He said OK but I want to be sure that we are welcome. If we can come we will probably set down at the KOA with our trailer unless I can dig out all the old tent camping stuff Lane & Joy Smith Jackson, MS Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches
  16. I emailed Jeremy and explained the problem with the cache and he has transferred it to Me. He could only place it on one account so I let him use mine, but please understand, Archiedh is as much the keeper of this cache as I. We will both be responsible for the care and feeding of this cache and we will maintain it as long as it remains in place or until the original owners return to claim it. PS: Jamie, we really didn't see much trampled vegatation, but in this area it could be subjective. I would think that trash on the trail would be a bigger concern than anything else. We saw a good bit of that and packed it out. L. Smith Jackson, MS Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches
  17. Archiedh and Joy & I went out and fixed up this cache today. The Cache is now in a ammo can and has a new logbook and additional goodies. The bottle was full and not another thing would fit. I have the bottle and the first log (accually just some notebook paper) The Cache in the same place but hidden somewhat better and I have parking coordinates and hints for the cache now. If the original owner is still around contact me and I will get you the bottle back and if you want to maintain the cache that's ok too. If not, I need to find out how to assume ownership of this cache. Archiedh and I are willing to keep it up, but we need access to the cache page. 22. As you read, Martin Strel made it the full length of the Mississippi River. Four Geocachers were there to see it. Me & Wife, (Cachercarry & Joy) and JamieZ & Clayjar. Joy & I went out on the crewboat with the rest of the crowd. Jamie & Clayjar paddled along side Martin & his escort for the final ten miles. Martin touching the piling at mile zero was an emotional moment for all present. Here is a link to Yahoo Photos of several shots. 23. I own Delorme TopoUSA 4.0, Mapsource Topo, & Maptech Terrain Navigator. Here's my 2 cents worth: The Delorme Topo is good but has limited terrain info in my opinion. The search is good and road info is fair to great depending on the area. The price for the whole country on 5-CD's was about $125.00 if I remember. The Garmin MapSource Topo is a fair program and I think it gives more information than the Delorme product and it works well on my Street Pilot. It costs about $100.00. Finally my personal favorite is the MapSend Terrain Navigator. I is kind of pricey @ 150.00 for a region (Not the whole US) but it is true USGS topo maps scanned and somewhat searchable. The GPS will interface to it for downloads & uploads of waypoints. I like the USGS quads and since it costs me $5.00 per map at the Geology office to get a quad, having three states worth for $150 and printable on easier to handle 8.5x11 paper is a deal. I generally download cache locations from EasyGPS into my Magellan 315 then upload them into the Terrain Navigator. I will edit the short names sometimes to give a better description on the maps. Again Just my opinion Lane Smith Jackson, MS Be verry verry quiet we're hunting caches
  24. JZ, I will check out the cache next weekend if Archie doesn’t get there first. Or if Archie wants to meet up and inspect it together we can do that. I remember that there is a trail from Lefluers bluff to that area but I don't know what shape it's in. It's been years since I ran those trails. See you in Venice this weekend! 25. I just got off the phone with the folks I spoke to you about. They are both stuck working Monday. I will definitely be down there with Joy and We will hook up somewhere. We are going to escape that direction this weekend and maybe hunt some S. Mississippi or LA caches as well as play around. I will call Guy tomorrow and finilize plans for the boat trip.
