  1. I went to brighthand and registered and posted my question. I go one reply right away. It did not solve my problem per se, but it did give me another ideas, like 'read the manual'....(online). Here is a copy of my reply about the problem... so simple, but I could not have found it without all your help... I had kind of tossed in the towel on this, thinking it might have been a problem that needed a repair to the unit.... anyway, thank you for your notes. I am now back caching paperless.... still don't know how the problem occurred, but it has been resolved. ---------------------------- First, I don't know how this happened. Second, your advice was a big help in keeping me going on this.... I tried the reset, but no joy. I went to the manual online and went to the problem area at the back and something like 'can't sync sort to pc'. I found my check mark missing (I don't know how it disappeared), and I put a check mark in and it fixed my problem. Thank you for your kindness in replying.. I can now go back to paperless caching.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Click the HotSync® Manager icon in the Windows taskbar in the lower-right corner of your screen. Make sure Local USB has a checkmark next to it. If not, click it.
  2. No, it is a tungsten E2, 2-3 y/o, with a usb cord. No serial connections....
  3. I've been using paperless caching for about a year. I've used my palm and used sync sort about 2 dozen times. Today, when I push the hot snyc button on the palm sync sort cord, my computer made the usual connection beep sound, and the palm gives the 'connecting with the desktop using cradle/cable' message... Then I get a message on the palm saying the connection between my device and the desktop could not be established... and it says try again. So, I tried about 8 times. I rebooted the computer, I have the syncsort icon in the tray and everything appears to be normal, except there is a connection problem. I tried different usb ports, but to no avail. All this stuff is magic to me, so I'm not sure what to do next. Any input is appreciated....
  4. I have a Palm Tungsten E2, about 1 year old. I used to be able to use it and leave it idle for a month or more and turn it on... now, I have to charge it, then after about 3-4 weeks, the battery is so dead it won't turn on. I have the quick start guide, but not the manual (can't find it). I thought it might have a li-on battery that should last for years. Anyway, am wondering how others have made out with this unit. I have the auto shut off set for 15 seconds, so do not turn it off using the on/off switch. Any helpful comments are appreciated.... Thanks, Arne
  5. great, thank you... I'm going to give it a try right now..... -------------- edit: thank you both... finally, I can just see what I want to see... took a bit of fumbling around, but I got it to work and it is GREAT.....
  6. When I do a pocket query, I can choose not to display caches found and ignored, they do not appear. But, when I go to hide and seek caches off the main screen, they all appear. Some caches, specifically puzzle caches, I don't want to do.. but I have to wade through all the caches I've found and ignored. Is there anyway to keep found and ignored caches from displaying when using hide and seek? Like yesterday, I just wanted to get out of the house and do a cache or two, so went to hide and seek, and had to ferret out a couple to print out...
  7. Thank you for the information... Since my total was over 1,000, with parking points, it could be that I just hit the 1,000 limit... I looked up points of interest. Can gsak save a list to poi instead of way points? I think I can live with the 1,000 limit, by being more selective, but it would be nice to know if I ever wanted to store more. Especially on a longer trip, with many destinations. btw, never knew about the 1,000 limit, though it may be in the manual and I just missed it.
  8. I tried to load an additional 500 caches for a trip I'm taking (in addition to the 500 I had on it) and I got a message saying it was out of memory. So, I deleted all the caches and only loaded those for the trip. Is there any special problem with just finding a micro sd chip and installing it, or are there other things I should know before I order one?
  9. Well, it's working.. thank you for the help.. Not remembering how I did it the first time, as someone helped me, I did not have the check in the usb connector box... I installed the software from the garmin site and now it works.... after a bit of fumbling around.... -------------- One other thing if you have the patience.. I was getting the gc numbers displayed on the garmin... a friend told me what changes to make in GSAK to get the cache name displayed... So, I am getting the cache name displayed, but only 7 letters of the name. Can someone explain where in gsak I make the changes to make more of the name display on my garmin? I think I should be able to get 14 letters. I think the change he gave me was divided into 12 characters followed by 2 more, maybe for names with numbers at the end, like cache-hide-1 and cache-hide-2 etc... I appreciate the help you've given me.. it has worked out well....
  10. This might seem like a silly question, but can anyone tell me if my garmin 76csx came with an installation cd? I'm trying to get the gsak waypoints to download to my garmin, and it isn't finding the garmin. And, I can't find a cd, and can't recall if I got one with it.... after the crash, everything has to be reloaded, so I want to get the garmin hooked up again via the usb port to do the download.
  11. Thank you.. I saw, but did not understand.. My brain just told me I had to register on the net, not in the GSAK program itself... It is all done and your help is greatly appreciated...... now I can move onto the next problem.. Have a great day.... Arne
  12. Unfortunately, my hard drive crashed and I'm having to reload everything... I'm at gsak and cachemate, now. I got a url from Clyde about reloading it.. I have the name and serial no., which I saved. But, I'm going in circles trying to register is... I'm supposed to go to 'register now', but can't find it. I go to registration, and it wants me to go to pay pal... I go to help/register and it sends me back to 'registration'.. Can someone give me direction, and preferably, the url I need to get to to enter my name and serial no.? I've tried to join the gsak forum, but need to be approved (that could take at least a day), so figured I would start here... This is what I've tried, but I'm missing something to get it to work.... I just can't find the 'Register Now' button, no matter what I do. ----------------- 1. Start GSAK 2. From the main menu click on Help=>Register 3. Click on the "Register Now" button 4. Enter your name and serial number 5. Click on OK
  13. I have a lot of stuff printed off and in my caching folder, but did not look at it, yet. I was concerned especially about lack of a cd for the palm, and my bad memory about whether or not I even had one... so my plea for help was kind of a getting ready for when my desktop gets back. I just wanted a head start on what type of problems I as going to have.. I had to get my laptop up to speed after a year of non-use and am a bit strung out on the whole mess I created for myself.... But, it looks like I should be in better shape than I first thought.. thank you for the input.
  14. My computer is in the shop getting a new hard drive install. nothing was salvagable I need to get cachemate back. I also need to get my tungsten e2 connected again, and it was so long ago, I need some help. first, on cachemate, do I just try to contact the owner and get another download? On my tungsten e2, I don't recall getting a cd to download any software, and I can't locate one in my software collection.. can someone tell me if I need a cd to do the sync function to get the pdb file downloaded from my desktop to my palm? ---- short version is it was all my fault. I had an external h/d sitting in my office and I had acronis loaded, but could not do the image copy because I had no fire wire board... that is being installed so I can do an image copy, but I have a lot to fix in the meantime... thanks for any help getting this back and working.
  15. Garmin maps are not locked.... if you can find anyone near one with a garmin who has a copy of metroguide, you can download them..... I bought a combo package 4 years ago for my 176 and was able to download them to my 76csx a couple of months ago... I had checked with garmin about it and they said, no problem.... I have just started building such a list. Early, but the top few links should get the journey started.
  16. thank you very much.... now I can stop looking/g/.... and start caching.
  17. With the garmin 76csx, do I have to change anything on the unit to tell it to use the external antenna, or does it just 'know it's there'??? I've looked at the menu and the manual, but see nothing about having to change a setting on the unit itself. Thank you.
  18. I use gsak to create a file to download to my palm, where I view it using cachemate.. is there any advantage to uisng the .prc file and Plucker instead? The .prc is neat if you want to go paperless. I have a Palm z22 (low end) and you can use either Mobipocket or Plucker. Plucker is a bit difficult but I love it and the indexes it generates. It is easy to install apps to palm. http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/paperless.html
  19. Thank you... yes, it was checked, though I do not remember ever changing it... I've unchecked it and will see if it gets rid of the file, but affects nothing I already do...
  20. I could, but don't want to mess up anything that is on there now. Since I can live with what I've got, I don't see that I would gain anything.. thank you for your reply.. .prc can be a generic extension for palm apps, among other things. You could do a Quick Install on that file and see what shows up in unfiled.
  21. I use a palm and for software, GSAK to get the data via pocket query, as mentioned in the previous note, plus Cachemate on my palm. Here is a link that should help: http://65.34.18.106/content.php?article.15
  22. I have the 76csx and am quite disappointed with all the float I get. Sometimes it gets me right there, but I can stand still and it will then tell me to go 25 feet in some direction.... Lots of wander... Seems best to follow it as I walk in and get to ground zero... if I walk around when I can't find it, I think I get more float. And even with the canopy gone in winter, it has not been that much better. I am in CT and from what I've heard WAAS is not functioning here... and there was something about sattelite relocation going on.. I'm not sure why that would affect my unit if I have 8 sattelites, but then I still think it's magic anyway...... I like the unit, but it sure ain't perfect in that regard...
  23. Recently, when I unzip my pocket query that comes via email, I not only get the 2 .GPX files, I'm now also getting a .PRC file... I use GSAK and Cachemate and use GSAK to create a PDB file which I hot sync to my palm. I did a google search on the prc file and it looks like it requires addtional software if I try to use it on the palm... so, the question is, is there any use or benefit for me to use the .prc file?
  24. Same link I used.... very good and walked me right through it.... just a note.. print it off and save it... much easier... I did it with 'caches along a route' as well.. so I can refer back it easily if needed.
