  1. This is not as much a topic as an announcement, but I thought folks in the local geocaching community would want to know that my husband of 27 years, Bob Newell, and 1/2 of the Puppers Team, had a massive stroke last week and did not recover. He was only 54. We are planning a service/reception at the Newport Shores Yacht Club in Bellevue starting at 2pm on Sunday November 6th. Anyone that might want to attend is welcome. I don't know that I will be back on the trail anytime soon but wanted to express my gratitude to all of you that enriched our lives through this wonderful sport. You are a special group of people. Cristy (the other half of Puppers)
  2. How funny you noticed, hubby went out on a couple of evening finds so we could have our one nanosecond of geofame. But it won't be a week or two before Rey del Roble overtakes all!

  4. I hate to say that I bought a GPS 38 by accident (thinking I was buying a GPS 12) and it wasn't very effective in the PNW. But perhaps if you live in an area with less obstructions it would provide a clear signal.
  5. I had the same experience as Totem Lake's wife, 4 hours to get from Kent to the Woodinville-Duvall area last night (finally arriving at home at 9:10pm). Tonight wasn't nearly as bad except I slid from the the left turn lane at the Woodinville-Duvall Road/Paradise Lake Road intersection to the straight-lane, but what's an 8' detour?!! Although I expect it's illegal to make a left hand turn from the right hand lane...
  6. I hate to be cynical, but this cacher shows no hides or finds on his/her profile which makes me question the legitimacy of the posting.

    Key for Cache

The 91Turbos graciously offered to take this key off our hands. Clsoing post!

    Key for Cache

Hi - we found a key to this cache in a Seattle cache a couple months ago. We thought about making the trek, but got concerned at what appears to be a 4x4 requirement. Tried emailing the owner for advice and/or address where we could return the key but got no response. If anyone would like this key or could place it closer to the Canadian locale we would sure appreciate it! Cache is GCNBG0, here is link: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...16-c50db1b90499 Puppers Woodinville, WA
  9. While this is only distantly related to this thread, I wanted to put a plug in for PNWAdmin who approved a cache of ours on Thanksgiving Day less than an hour after we had submitted it. The cache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=15adeb4d-74ca-4b7e-b1f9-3f4f0a744e6d) is in memory of our geopup (and namesake for Puppers) who passed away the Sunday before Thanksgiving. We never expected the reviewers to be working over the holidays and this speaks volumes to their dedication and service.
  10. This really distresses me being a recent finder also.
  11. Took me three hours to get home tonight - yikes! Can't remember a commute this bad unless I go back to the 80's, the year when folks abandoned their cars on the floating bridges and I was commuting from Seattle (at the time). Can I call in sick tomorrow?
  12. It makes us really sad as we previously thought the best of the geocaching community. Having picked up a couple of coins that later went missing (including Markta's SAAB coin which I still fret about [http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?guid=feb9d677-aa3a-4313-88ad-8e5243d800a4]) I am now reluctant to pick them up in the first place.
  13. Are we the only ones who noticed that Wienerdog and Lucyandrickie both hit 4000 this weekend?!! To two of our most admired caching duos (or trios, if you count Chloe), congratulations! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...91-032e923416a8
  14. Since I have a habit of losing/breaking GPSr's, I'd like to have an inexpensive model as a back-up should I be "in-between" GPSr's. Current Ebay selling prices seem to be (for used units) ~ $50-70, I'll entertain any fair offer (new or used).
  15. We actually had a GPSr before we knew about geocaching (I had previously gifted a Garmin 12 to my hubby just for hiking purposes). Then we happened to be down in S. CA in June 2002 for one of my business meetings when my sister (Ratdogs) took us on our first cache. We weren't really bitten, but on the day of our return to Seattle, hubby had a catestrophic tear to his retina and he was transferred to Swedish for emergency surgery. We found, in the MANY weeks ahead of recovery (where he was mandated to literally be "face down" for healing) that geocaching was something he could do (that and strawberry picking ) and being active helped maintain his sanity. From then, well, it was history!
  16. Our TB - initially logged by Krew on 10/31/05 - is still showing with him, nearly three months later.
  17. Thanks Landrover & Fledermaus for your responses. In looking at Krew's Groundspeak profile, he last made a visit on 12/14/05 (even though his last cache log was 10/10/05). So I'm assuming his profile email is current and that he would have (or soon will have) gotten my message. Perhaps he was just hoarding the TB's to give them a big trip to Europe? Groundspeak has been alerted as well, and they have sent a message also.
  18. Our "Postal Bear" TB went missing on it's first find, but what makes it more concerning is that the geocacher who picked it up ("Krew") appears to have a total of **42** some-odd TB's attached to his account, dating back to last summer. I've tried emailing him but have received no response, any ideas on next steps?
  19. I dropped it at "Liberty's View" (GCPWGC) over the weekend, unfortunately it expires on 12/31/05 (also keep in mind that it's based on "availability", and with airlines these days that means a longshot! )
  20. We would be interested, but our email came back undeliverable? If you guys are watching this thread, could you contact us at cristyj@comcast.net? Thanks, Cristy (of team Puppers)
  21. Thanks to all of you who hid the many caches that made our milestone possible. Couldn't have done it without you!
  22. OK, so I'm not a newbee...in fact, we have been geocaching since 2002 and have a bunch of finds. I figure I have found probably half, despite my handicap (a Garmin 12 compared against hubby's Garmin 76S). Problem is, I lost my Garmin 12 a couple of weeks ago when I was unexpectantly stung by a number of bees, and tossed the GPSr in the process (you have to understand that I had a serious allergy to bees as a child, and as a result am paranoid about them). As I ran down the trail, hubby tried to recover the GPS but got stung twice himself in the process. Sooo, until the winter freeze steps in, and there's a chance of recovering my 12, I'm GPS-less. In reading this forum thread, I see a number of suggestions for a replacement. But I'm hoping that I won't have to repeat the research that others' have done and someone can lead me down the right path, knowing: 1. I don't need sophisticated mapping capability, since hubby has the 76S 2. I DO need accuracy capability equal to or greater than the 12 (I bought a "disposable" Garmin 38 on Ebay as a temporary substitute, and have found that it has neither accuracy nor reliable reception). 3. I would ideally like to be able to download caches into the unit, so that when I am traveling, don't need to hand-enter the coordinates nor have to guess at which caches are closest to me. I know you are all going to think that I am techno-backwoodsy, and the fact is you are right! I just need the minimum technology to get me to the cache site and then rely on my geosense to take over. Thanks for any help you can provide! Cristy (the less techno-savvy half of Puppers)
  23. Thought you might be interested in this email, which I received from my sister (who not only introduced us to geocaching, but happens to be married to a Professor at the University of California, Riverside). This email was sent to him in his faculty position, and ultimately sent on to us. We're assuming the people "playing games" were geocachers. ------ Original Message -------- > Subject: [Faculty] Community alert regarding a > suspicious package > Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2005 10:29:11 -0700 > From: Lane, Michael > Dear Community, > > Yesterday (08/25/05) at about 6:00p.m. UCPD > responded to a report of a > suspicious package near the new Physical Sciences > building.
