  1. I realize there are a few rare cases where duplicate logs might be appropriate. I have some from years ago when a monthly event went under the same GC code for a couple years. Why not have a tab that the CO can activate that prevents more than one "found it log" from the same account to be entered on their cache?
  2. I've been seeing duplicate logs on lots of caches over the past year or more. Those that appear on my caches get deleted and email the "finder" that I've eliminated the extra entries. No one has complained. Tonight, while looking over some caches to do later this week, I found my first "Double Duplicate". Yes, four consecutive found it logs on a cache by the same account. This was not an equipment malfunction... Each of the four "found it" logs have a different comment. I realize there are a few rare cases where duplicate logs might be appropriate. 3. I've just started seeing "finds" being recorded by owners doing maintenance to their caches. App problem or lack of understanding????
  4. Keep in mind it is the scout leadership, not the kids that ultimately set the standards. Here is the final "requirement". c. Set up and hide a public geocache, following the guide- lines in the Geocaching merit badge pamphlet. Before doing so, share with your counselor a six-month maintenance plan for the geocache where you are personally responsible for the first three months. After setting up the geocache, with your parent’s permission, follow the logs online for 30 days and share them with your counselor. So after 90 days he is "done". Maybe it would be better that it be archived and removed as a final requirement before receiving the badge.
  5. I just enter the coordinates at the beginning of my trip and go to that map. Pick out a couple to do there, then move about an hours drive toward my destination and find another group to do there. Continue as necessary. A quick stop and a short walk every hour or so is a good even without the added bonus of a cache or two. Another angle, if you are interested, is to try to get one in every county that you pass through, but that may take more time than you have to spend on your trip.
  6. Yes the Orienteering Merit Badge will take a little work and if done properly, does teach the Scout all the skills needed to be successful at the sport. Several of us in the Orienteering community spent a lot of time in the beginning working with BSA to modify their initial pamphlet and requirements to fit the standards of the sport. It may take a similar effort by the Geocaching community to modify their program and also add a section describing in detail the responsibilities of owning a cache. The current edition simply says to "Maintain" it for 3 months, without defining "maintain".

    New Maps

Biggest problem I have with the new maps is that there is no option to eliminate the background noise from the satellite images. The road names and "Googlized" interpretation of their location often hides good & accurate data.
  8. Thanks for keeping those up. But the truth is, most cachers go after 1.5/1.5 LPC's caches, not quality caches in the woods. Again, the numbers back this up. Agree and this is what is causing many of the "old-timers" to find other things to do. We often have to choose between taking an enjoyable walk in the woods where there are no new caches, or taking a suburban tour of shopping malls where the new ones are located. I can still drive to some good areas, but the days of a short drive to a couple good hides are gone.
  9. I usually log it in a less confusing way as in "My GPS says it is 35 feet SW of the posted coordinates".
  10. Isn't that the point of the game? Agree... anyone can use a GPS. Learning to read a map is a skill that will help you in many situations even after the batteries die.
  11. As long as duplicate logs can be entered the CO should have the ability to delete them.
  12. Just noticed this today.. Was looking at my state souvenirs and noticed that the date of issue seldom agrees with the date I found the cache.
  13. Should have a way to turn off the icons of your found caches to lessen the clutter in dense areas. Never mind.. found it. The update must have sent me back to default settings.
  14. Just did another "great" example of a unmaintained water filled Scout cache with the added twist of 50-60 ft coordinate error. Thankfully someone added a huge spoiler so it can be found.

    CUB SCOUTS

Actually following "just a map" is called Orienteering and is much more difficult than Geocaching. To compare.. find 10 caches in an hour covering 3-4 miles of off trail running in about an hour.
  16. Really stinks.... in Australia and unable to access the site to get lists of nearby caches. Glad I had already downloaded a few nearby ones.
  17. Can't access my account nor can my wife. We are currently in Australia, but were able to search the site this morning when we planned our day but now can't log our finds or plan tomorrow's walk. But we can get to the forums????
  18. I'm a bit of a "II" for about a 10 mile radius from home, but turn into a "V" once I'm traveling.
  19. I've seen one listed as a two stage puzzle with some gallon jugs available at stage 1. The route to stage two takes the searchers past a dependable water source. The puzzle is to realize you'll need the jugs of water at the final. I had to walk back for them.
  20. My first cache hides were in 1 gallon plastic mayonnaise jars. I listed them as "regular" but added a disclaimer (Cache is my standard camo PE mayo jug with a 3.75" opening. Plan your trades accordingly. ) because the opening was under 4inches in diameter and some people were accustomed to leaving trade items that wouldn't go through that opening. Can't imagine that as a problem today.
  21. Just noticed a local cache that has 5 consecutive logs by the same cacher. The wording of each is unique so they were written and submitted as separate log entries. I would have deleted all duplicates if it was one of my caches.
  22. It used to be that cachers looked for interesting places for people to visit, then found a suitable spot for a cache and placed their cache. Now it seems like they look for a spot that is far enough from all the nearby caches to be "legal" and drop a micro on the ground or hang a bison tube in a tree. In my area caches that are off trail get very few visitors after the FTF is taken.
  23. Well, I just hit #1000 yesterday. Onward and upward.
  24. Anyone else keep track of the letterboxes they have found by accident while geocaching?
