This whole thread has been very enlightening. Thanks to all the experienced geocachers out there who took the time to answer.

Hobby stores are a great place for swag. I usually go to Michael's where they always have stuff in bins that has been marked down. I have bought a set of mini colored pencils for $0.15, a set of mini highlighters for $0.60 and award stickers for $1.00 as examples. I try to stay on theme with trail walking and cache seeking items such as compasses, mirrors, pens and pencils, etc. I also try to carry a miniature cache log with me in case the log in the one I find needs replacement: My link But my favorite swag to leave is my signature - a small greyhound charm.

Thanks to all who posted to this topic. As a NeoCacher, I appreciate experienced cachers' recommendations. As a result, I will go back to my first find and maintain it: the cache container had no lid, (so items were wet including a faded scrap of paper for the log) and the only swag was a golf ball. I will put the original container in a zippy bag and add a log and a few swag items. I plan on carrying small logs, pens, and swag items for future hunting.
