  1. I'm sorry to hear about your problem, and I'm not really sure of an answer. My German teacher once taught me that "If you don't have access to a character map to put an e after the vowel that requires umlauts." ex. Schön Schoen = Same thing. I don't know if the site will recognize this or not, but you may try it. Who knows? I'm sure someone else will have a better solution to your problem. t_h
  2. It would probably be cheaper "easier" to make an option for a shortened email notification.
  3. That would be a good thing. I mean, just last week I was in Nashville, I got 32 messages for 8 new caches. I mean seriously, with a new event coming up in my area, Im thinking I may have to disable my notifications until the event so that I still have some for all the new caches.
  4. Hey guys, I posted a thread for the "Hazard/ Perry County Tour II"(GC14H9K). It doesn't look like anyone has even bothered to open the thread. Check it out, we would love to have some fellow Kentucky Geocachers there.
  5. I would like to invite everyone and anyone to attend the 2nd annual Hazard/ Perry County Tour II (GC14H9K). This event turned out great last year, and everyone who attended last year seemed to enjoy theirselves. We had cachers from the Lexington, KY area and the Louisville, KY area. This is only a 3-4 hour drive tops. The event is only around 3 hours from Knoxville, TN. There are plenty of places to stay. Both hotels and campsites are available. There is an entry fee of $10.00, this covers an event T-shirt, event coin, and 1 meal. The event is stretched over a 3 day period. October 19, 20 and 21st. Check out the cache page: Everyone, Mark your calendars!!!!!! October the 19th, 20th, and 21st, is the “Big” Geocaching Weekend Event in Hazard City/Perry County, Kentucky in Eastern, Kentucky. The event is going to be called “The Hazard City/Perry County Tour.” I, Kentucky Trio, and other members of The Big Sandy Area Geocachers, are working with The Hazard City/Perry County Department of Tourism to host this “Big “ weekend event. We currently have 85-90 caches in Hazard and Perry County at this time and will have more, which will become permanent on October the 19th, 2007, and some temporary caches for you to log. These caches will be located throughout Hazard City and Perry County. Perry County was formed in 1821. It is located in the Eastern Coal Field region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 700 to 2520 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 29,390 in a land area of 342.15 square miles, an average of 85.9 people per square mile. The county seat is Hazard. Perry County is a long county with a lot of distance in between the two ends. These 85-90 caches are located around some places of historical significance to Perry County and Hazard City as well as other places of significance, interest and/or scenic areas so bring your cameras to take a lot of pictures. Our new caches will also be located around some places of historical significance to Perry County and Hazard City as well as other places of significance, interest and/or scenic areas. We will have prize caches with the prizes in them or cards with with a number. You get the prize that corresponds to that number. We are having a coin made for the event as well as t-shirts for the event both of which will be different than last years. There will be a small entrance fee for a geocaching team of $10.00 per geocaching name. Example; a family that goes by one name will just pay $10.00. We are going to try and do some things the same and some a little differently. If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to email me at rmm879@windstream.net. ******The beginning coordinates for the event will be changing as the building we had planned on starting the event at is booked up/ filled up for the weekend. Will post new coordinates soon!!!! July the 26th, 2007 Remember, the cost for the registration is $10.00 per geocaching name. You may preregister online or at the event the same cost of $10.00 but we would prefer that you notify us before the night of the event so that we will know approximately how many to expect in attendance. Also, please post on the event page that you will be attending. Thank you, Kentucky Trio.. We are also working on getting those that come to the event discounts at some of our local hotels, discounts for staying and eating at The Buckhorn State Resort Park Lodge. We are also working on getting discounted rates for those that want to camp at the Buckhorn State Resort Park Campground. There may be some available camping spots within the county that would not usually be used for camping, some with electric and some without. We are working on that. Then, they will meet back at a specified location where they will be served a small meal. During this time, prizes and awards will be handed out. The event will be scheduled to end about 3:00pm. October is a great time of the year, especially here in the mountains. Leaves are changing colors, wildlife is stirring, the air is cool, not real hot, and the nights can get really cold. While here for this event, we do not want you to just cache but enjoy the scenery, wildlife, and what the mountains of Eastern KY has to offer. Keep checking back to this website caching page as I will add details and updates as this event is still being planned as they become available. For those of you that do not have a laptop computer, be sure to bring your USB cable support so that we may or you can download all of the coordinates for the permenant and temporary caches to your GPS for you. 6. No, I know what I am talking about, and I have searched this topic before. It seems that you haven't done your homework and seen that everybody else who has posted a topic similar to this one are asking for coordinates to be added to the notifications. I do believe the OT was to get the notifications shortened so that they fit into the 160 character limit on most phones with texting capabilities. I see no threads with answers to this topic. If I am missing something, do let me know.
  7. I prefer to go back and either delete the Will Attend log. Then log attended.
  8. I say, we first ask to have the alerts shortened enough so that they will fit into 1 text message. 160 characters. I don't want to push the staff to put the coordinates in them "yet". That may be a future add-on. I think the main thing is to just make the alerts fit in 1 message. I'm not disagreeing with you, just saying we need to do 1 thing at a time.
  9. Well.. I just got 12 messages for 3 new caches today. I couldn't even read them fast enough, I kept getting new ones. lol
  10. I think I am going to have to agree with the OP, this may not be the best idea. In case you have to read the cache page for some important message, etc. I mean, I could go either way. It doesn't matter to me. All I ask is that there be a text friendly alert added. That fits in the 160 character limit. As for the coordinates in the text, it's not a must, but would be a luxury.
  11. Judging by what I have read, I think that if you work with the reviewer, you will be able to get this on published. You said that you must travel .21 mi to the next cache due to the creek. Just ask nicely, and you will be amazed what a little time and patience will reward.... Trust me, I have had similar experiences. Just my 0.02
  12. I sent off an email to the big man himself yesterday. Lets Hope at least you and I see this in our profiles as test subjects. Wouldn't that be nice. Become guinea pigs for new things at Groundspeak. That'd be nice. Ohh and on another note... This is my 100th post to the forums...! The Steaks I hope that we can have it altered. I would be willing to be the test subject! lol btw congrats on the #100
  13. Your right, I understand. I don't think you should include the coordinates for safety reasons, along with others. Anyways, that would just be that much more saved space. So, where are the moderators? Any chance we could have this feature altered?
  14. I'm not really sure about all the steps taken by the reviewer, but I know of a few. 1. The distance from the nearest cache. 2. If it is in a Park that allows Geocaches 3 If it is near a railroad. 4. Commercial issues. 5. Cemeteries/ other places that require (No disturbing). 6. It is is a puzzle, the checksum.
  15. Could we possibly even do without sending which reviewer published the cache? .. It's just a thought, I mean, I'm all about giving them their deserved credit. However, you do see the reviewers name on the cache page when you go to log it. ex. GC(XXXX) "Cache Name" was published on. 07/29/07 Distance 1.2mi (N37 14.234 W 86 10.352) <-- "Possibly coordinates pending the 160 character limit, this is not a necessity. It would just be something extra." See more <link>http://wap.geocaching.com/</link>
  16. I think you pretty much nailed the solution on the head. I mean, just as long as it's under 160 characters.
  17. "One possibility might be to ask for a new feature of a "text-friendly notification e-mail". This would be a super-stripped-down notification mail without padding like "This is an automated mail from Geocaching", etc. You could then opt for this in your profile ("Send me really short cryptic e-mails, they're going to be sent on to my phone")." I like this idea, lets work to see if we can't make this a reality!
  18. I recently purchased text messaging on my cell phone. I get a limit of 200 messages per month. (Overage = .10 per recieve .05 per sent). I got the notification set up through my profile, but there is one problem. The notifications come via "email" to my text messaging system on my phone. These alerts are so long, I sometimes get 1/4 1/5 per listing published. This really eats away my allotted messages. I was wondering if there was any way to either shorten those messages up a little, or simply create a feature for recieving notifications via Text messages besides email?? I am afraid I am going to have to disable the notifications if I keep getting so many messages. At first I had the radius set to 40 miles, I have now lowered that to 25. That is pretty much the maximum distance I would travel to attempt a FTF. Is there any hope of having the messages shortened? Or possibly another add-on feature just for text messages?? Thanks, treasure_hunter
  19. I'm from the 02' era, when I first joined, I was pretty active. I guess as time went on, I kind of lost interest. I came back for a week or so a year or two ago, now I just drop in every now and then to read whats new!
  20. Whenever you place those caches, be sure and let me know! Im coming down to Charlotte! lol Nicely done!
  21. The Big Sandy Area Geocachers are sponsoring and event on 7/7/07 and it looks as if a couple of our local cachers will be on vacation during this time, and the attendance may be a little low. Please, if you can make it, come and join us. Here is the link to the Event Thanks, treasure_hunter
