  1. quote:Originally posted by Marty Fouts: Good luck. Don't forget that there are two caches in the park (if you haven't gotten them already) Thanks! We did those, and the ones in and around Alum Rock Park, this weekend. It was a great weekend to be outdoors. Just three more to go before Saturday. --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  2. Well, seeing as we found our first cache on the 5th of July of 2002, and we are just 4 away from 200, I'd say we are at *least* as addicted as you. Fortunately for me, my wife is just as addicted. --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  3. This sounds like so much fun, I wish we were down in that area so that we could participate. Hope the weather and company are nice! --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  4. I would say that 99.9% of all caches would not fall into the category of "extreme scavenger hunt". Most are just a "walk in the park". It would be a shame if this was tied to geocaching because it in no way represents the sport/hobby. --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  5. This happened to me on all my computers. Once I figured out that I just needed to logout and log back in, all was right with the world again. --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  6. I think trying to reinstall a removed or damaged benchmark would be pointless. There is no way (unless you are a surveyor) that you could put it back in correct location. Having it back in the ground it the wrong location would be a "Bad Thing". Kudos to you for calling it in and getting permission to keep it. --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  7. quote:Originally posted by ArtMan:One of the nice things about benchmark hunting is that it is available to those without GPS gear, since directions to the marks are given with respect to physical landmarks I learned early on that the GPS is darn near useless and misleading for finding the benchmark. It's value is in recording the current location. --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  8. I personally am out to be the first to photograph a benchmark. If I see a benchmark that already has photos posted, I won't 'find' that one. If I see a benchmark that has been found, but there are no photographs, I'll go ahead and 'find' that one. The photos give validity to the find (much like they do for virtual caches, which is why they are usually required). They also show the condition of the mark as of that date. --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  9. >Marker Type: cupola I never knew what a cupola was before (or a finial of a cupola, for that matter). Rog, what kind of trouble did you get into? --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  10. >Stability: Mark of questionable or unknown stability. >Designation: TAUNTON INSANE ASYLUM 1889 Well duh! --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"

    Form letter

Why not have the geocaching.com system mail out the form letter automatically. That way, there is nobody to get mad at. It's just a 'ping' from the system reminding you that you have a bug in your possesion that hasn't been logged in X days/weeks/months. What do ya think? --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  12. quote:Originally posted by Centaur:Now, if i really had my druthers, i would wish for there to be a way to draw a bounding box in the MAP display and have the server list all caches within that box. For example, when doing a vacation along major roadways, like I did in September, it would have been nice to just draw a rectange along route 80 and have the server list the caches, etc. (This opposed to the current pan, zoom, identify method.) One easy way to do this (but not so graphically oriented) would be to allow two coords to be entered, and then report all the caches within the box described by the two coords. It would even be easy to limit the size of the box to reasonable dimentions. --Marky "Everyone spends time in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr"
  13. I believe what you get in that situation is a big arrow that points north, and a track arrow (if you are moving) that points in the direction you are travelling. If you are using the magnetic compass, you should be able to turn the unit sideways and the track arrow should still point in the direction of your travel. --Marky
  14. I find that the more devious cache placements are ones where there are a bunch (or at least a few) good candidate hiding spots, but the actually cache is nearby, often well hidden in an area that looks like you couldn't hide anything. Those are the ones that give me fits...
  15. Yeah, I've been e-mailing people who have logged finds on my caches to see if they were interested. --Marky
  16. We're going to try to get 8 more finds in before the picnic so that it will count as #200 for us. --Marky
  17. I have 2 left to go on my third page. They are 9.5 and 9.9 miles from home.
  18. My numbers are: 1. 150 physical caches found/185 total finds= 81% 2. Average difficulty - 1.74 3. Average terrain - 1.71 --Marky
  19. The benchmark upload does automatic resizing so that if you submit a 3 meg image, it will reduce it down to >150k (the benchmark limit, I believe). I agree that if an image is already below 150K, it should not be resized/resaved and should be left as it is.
  20. Mine has the same problem, but it wasn't really bothering me. I guess I should return it, especially now that we have an E-Trex (that I got at Fry's for $89 as a back up). 7 Days is a long time to be without a GPSr. --Marky
  21. From the 'ad', it was only used once and has been sitting around collecting dust. --Marky
  22. The only problem I have with that is that it wouldn't be able to snap into my winshield mounted car cradle without removing that first, and I use the car cradle all the time (it has external power ). I don't think there is a solution for me, unless it is some type of snap in/snap out arrangement like the car cradle is... --Marky

Plus, I don't want to end up looking like your avatar. I don't know if that has anything to do with Platypus bladders but I don't want to take the risk... --Marky
  24. You asked if we would like it more/less, but then make us pick Yes or No. Yes means I do like it more/less? And no means I don't like it more/less? I think you should change Yes to More and No to Less in the poll. --Marky
  25. quote:Originally posted by dthigpen:$30 or $100... So, you're saying that we should not buy the pass, and hope we get caught, so that we will be donating $100 instead of $30? --Marky
