Would anyone with experience be interested in viewing some screenshots of my unpublished cache? I would like some input or advice from somebody before submitting it to the land manager for viewing. Please email me via my profile if so.

    Ry Dawg,

If you scroll down the earthcache page we actually created a thread for this a while back!

    Hope this is helpful!

  2. Just booked a small European vacation for the Mrs. and I; our honeymoon (though delayed two years) will also net me four new Geocaching Countries (though only one of those is actually a new country for me).

    1) UK

    2) France

    3) Italy

    4) Vatican City.

Looking forward to getting out of the US again - it's been too long!

If you identify a potential earthcache subject, I would recommend you run it by the geoaware that covers Antarctica beforehand, GeoawareANZ2, to scope the lesson and make sure they are on board with your concept.  It may help speed along publication later.  But looking through the unpublished earthcaches for Antarctica, the main hurdle appears to be that some folks who submit earthcaches for Antarctica have never been - so showing up is important.

I own an Earthcache in the frigid south... I'll add my own two cent to this as well: the Geoaware I worked with was exceedingly thorough and wanted some proof that you had been to the location. No issues there, but make sure you're ready for that. Additionally if your'e setting up an offshore Earthcache while it's POSSIBLE to do, you'll also have to prove the uniqueness of that location. That was one of my biggest hurdles to my cache publication - how was this one location unique in the geology/cryology vice a location 2 miles distant?

Just things to think about... feel free to join us over in the earthcaching forums if you want to discuss it even more! Also, welcome to the Polar Explorers club!

Which souvenir would you be more proud to tell people that you had earned? The United States one that 2.7 million cachers have, or the Antarctica one that only 339 have?

While rarity is certainly a factor, at the end of the day it's more about the story you have. Anyone can fake a find and "fake" a souvenir; but nobody can 'fake' the memories!

Total counties is available on project-gc

    https://project-gc.com/Statistics/TopCountyFinders?profile_country=United+States&country=United+States&submit=Filter

There is someone listed with 3141 out 3142.

I am assuming they are missing Kalawao county in Hawaii.

(oops - too slow on the link so more info)

    Summary:

148 at over 1000 US counties

876 at over 500 US counties

1966 at over 341 US counties

Note - it has the original poster listed at 340 counties.

Huh; this was an interesting statistic! The numbers are much lower than I might have guessed. I'm sitting at 935 counties. I figured there would be at least a couple thousand people with more than me (based on general interest in the hobby) but I'm sitting at 176.

New goal for 2020... break into the top 100!

I am pleased that the UAE has now been given a souvenir. Although there are not that many caches there, lots of people make stopovers there, as it's one of the world's busiest airports.

I have found ten caches there over two visits.

Technically not its own country, but Antarctica received its souvenir yesterday! I'm excited that the Frog is still planning to continually roll out souvenirs (and that they're retroactively given).

    From the cache page:

Barely even a Virtual cache. There's nothing to visit. All the work can be done from a computer using Google Maps.

Having gone to school in that school district I can tell you even using google earth is a stretch for most people because the answer/location is fairly well known.

Heck I even found the answer in about 2 minutes scrolling through old logs...

It looks like GC42JW9 started out with a log (and a container), but then the CO decided to turn it into a virtual cache after it was repeatedly muggled.

In contrast, GCK9CV seems to have started life as a type of codeword cache, with a container, but no long, and finders were supposed to send the codeword (details of the item in the container) to the CO.

An interesting observation on yet another cache (also in Kansas, though this one is a mystery) GC1K1N0.

In GC42JW9 you can see the Owner's Maintenance log where the CO decides to shift the type from "physical to virtual." Whereas in this new example, the very first logs mention the ALR/email requirement (and none mention a log!).

But not anymore in 2019. At least BC Ferries don´t service inland passage during wintertime wich started in mid september. I wanted to sail from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy3 weeks ago, but the scedule for this time of the year is blank ;)

Prince Rupert has officially been removed from the AMHS schedule due to issues with getting further RCMP support.

In general the AMHS is on its last legs for better or for worse due to a lack of funding. Which is sad because its a great way to see the inside passage for cheap!

I’m looking to put my total “county” count up into the quadrouple digits this year.

Additionally I’d like to complete my fizzy (three away!) and my Jasmer (dang November 00)!

Well Im closer on the counties now - 935 counties total. Not sure I have enough time for another roadtrip to break 1,000 this year.

Completed my Jasmer this summer with a side trip to New York!

    Fizzy... still 3 away.

One day I'm sure I will figure out a cost and time effective way of hopping through all the cool little island nations across the Caribbean...

Potentially considering a cruise (shudder) to get through a half a dozen of them, out of Miami.

I hear cruises have their upsides, but having just spent two years living in a cruise port town... I shudder at the idea of taking one of those.

Nice! How was it? I've been considering adding the former Dutch Antilles to my flag collection, but haven't quite convinced myself yet.

Only got two caches; and stayed primarily in Willemstad; but it was pretty nice. Enjoyed some beaches, had some fairly good food and really loved walking around and viewing the architecture. It's like an old style dutch town was dropped in the middle of the Caribbean. The crime rate is a bit high but overall it's a fairly safe area. Wish I had been able to get out of the town more but it is what it is.

I´m also finding it pointless to host an event only fpr [sic] yourself. It might always be possible that some people show up, but this cruise ship stops are verry random events.

I´d kinda like the idea, that a published event, where only the owner attended will be deleted. I can have events with my self every day, on the toilet for example :P

So I realize I'm bringing up an older friend (though by no means close to "zombie" status) but I recently had a similar experience with an event. As it's an event I hosted and I'm the CO I'm comfortable sharing the GC code here - GC88RCE. This event was planned in a well populated caching area with a pretty active community, I would however qualify it as a "vacation event" as I currently live several thousand of miles away. To that end I have to agree... if no one shows up can you really call it an "event?"

    Now with that being said...

While I agree with much of what you've said, I can also see why this particular one was rejected. If nobody showed up the year before, it isn't unreasonable to assume that there's a good chance the same would happen again.

Here's a quintessential case where you have the self-fulfilling prophecy. Just because nobody showed up to an event in this park this time, does that mean next time in Waterford I should be blocked from hosting an event here, because my last one was unsuccessful?

    Just food for thought.

Geocaching HQ, the Geological Society of America, and the EarthCache Reviewing Team have worked together to bring you a new update to the EarthCache Guidelines, for logging tasks.  We have updated the Help Center with this guidance too.

Effective immediately, photo requirements are permitted, but can only be included as an addition to well-developed logging tasks.  The standard for these is the same as with the new virtual reward caches, i.e. a personal item must be an option for those who do not want to photograph themselves.

The same high standards for EarthCache logging tasks still apply.  This task is acceptable only as an addition to well-developed logging tasks, not as a substitution.

This update should make it easier for cache owners to monitor the integrity of the logs on their EarthCaches.

Can this be retroactively added to already published Earthcaches? (In other words can I remove the word "optional" from all of my photo requirement logs on already owned and established Earth caches?)

Hmm, I kinda suck at non-caching recommendations.  You'll want to see the Icefields Parkway of course, between Jasper and Banff.  But it'll be full of tourists, and accommodations will be pricey.  You're from Alaska I gather, so maybe you have similar scenery at home.

The badlands around Drumheller are cool, and there's a nice simple campground just north of town beside the ferry.  And though I haven't been, I hear Liard Hot Springs are worth a visit, right up at the top of BC.  On a similar note, I've enjoyed Lussier Hot Springs, and Halfway Hot Springs.  The latter was a hippy village when I visited; a culture-of-BC experience, a delight.

I definitely had Liard Hot Springs on the list. I think we also are going to take some time in Carcross to see the "World's Smallest Desert" as well too.

The glacier retreated a lot too. ☹️

We have the Mendenhall Glacier here in Juneau. Our unofficial motto is "It used to be bigger." The rate of retreat is really quite sad and impressive.
