  1. I am having a problem with getting a backgroud image to load into a yet to be published geocache listing. Each time I try to add a background image, I get an error message.

    Server Error in '/' Application.

    Runtime Error

Description: An exception occurred while processing your request. Additionally, another exception occurred while executing the custom error page for the first exception. The request has been terminated.

  2. I ran a search for the geotour attribute and the caches in an older geotour I participated in do not show up although the geocaches are still active. They just lost their attribute.

  3. Sorry, I'm not requesting a new cache type with its oun icon, but something similiar to the way favorite points now show up on the map by highly favorited caches. A geotour symbol could be triggered by the geotour attribute, and when the geotour is over and the attribute is removed from the listing, the symbol would also be removed.

  4. I think a group that invests thousands of dollars into setting up, placing great caches in amazing places in their area, and promotes geocaching through television reporting and advertising of their geotour is worthy of a temporary special icon for it's caches on the map. It would be very helpful to newer geocachers who are excited to learn the game, and to geocachers coming in from out of the area to plan their route to a new area and complete the geotour. To me, the convenience of a temporary icon would show support from the geocaching community. A temporary local event that has two geocachers show up has has it's own icon that temporarily shows on the map. Running searches, making lists, and plotting out routes seems very inconvenient, especially to the new geocachers we are trying to bring into the geocaching community, especially when a temporary icon, that you can just see on the map, would help so much.

  5. It would be nice if the icons for the geocaches on the map, that are part of a geotour, could be easily recognised as part of a geotour. Perhaps the standard icons could have a ring around them or something so they could stand out from the other geocache icons on the map. Once a geotour is over, the icons could revert back to the standard icons. It would helpful in finding and planing a visit to be able to easily spot them on the map. Would something like that be possible? Thank you for any consideration.

    Sure I can help. :-)

    First step: create the image

There are several ways to do it. Take an own picture or create one using any tool on your computer. Adding simple text (like the gc code) can be done by simple tools like MSPaint (if you use windows).

There are websites that can help providing "better" banners (google something like banner generator). But in my opinion a simple banner created from a nice photograph of yours is often better than a generated one.

The picture shouldn't be too big in length and width and of course you should have the rights to use it (don't take any picture from the internet).

You can use gifs but step 2 is easier with static pictures (jpg for example).

    Second step: upload the image

If it is a static picture you can upload it directly via listing to the Groundspeak server. If it is a gif (or you need it in higher resolution than the website offers) you need an external website.

You should have the image link, say "http://www.IMAGE.jpg".

Third step: put the image in the listing

    As simple as that: Use

    <img src="http://www.IMAGE.jpg"></img>

in the html of your listing at the position were you want the banner to be. You can add several options like width, alternate text, ... what ever you want.

Give an explaining text that this is the banner for your cache.

Fourth step: the code for others

This seems complicated at first. Usually you want the banner to be a link to your cache listing. So when someone finds the banner in a profile he can directly go to the cache. We have to use something like

    <a href="LINK TO YOUR CACHE"><img src="http://www.IMAGE.jpg"></img></a>

Again, you have possibilies of using width and other options.

The problem is: If you put this code in your listing others don't see the code. They see the image with the link. So we use

    &gt;
    &lt;

instead of the tag symbols. The browser does not read those as < and > and therefore does not show the picture. But as these are the symbols for < and > you see the correct source code in the listing. Add any text and then it may look like:

If you have found the cache you may put the following banner to your profile. Just paste the following html code:

    <a href="LINK TO YOUR CACHE"><img src="http://IMAGE.jpg"></img></a>

The browser then shows the code as desired not the image itself.

Hint: You can copy the code in your own profile just to see if everything is fine.

I hope that helped - perhaps not only you but Burt also? Feel free to ask if anything is unclear.

    Best wishes

    Jochen

Thank you for your help Jochen ! I have wondered how to do this, and today I followed your steps and was able to create a banner. I love learning how to do new things !!

  7. I don't own a smart phone, but I am able to go with another person to find the Adventure Lab caches.
I was wondering if there was a way to view the starting locations on a map, a map similar to the app, on my home computer.
This would help me plan my caching day. I still cache the old "pencil and paper" method of planning my day, writing down the coords to each cache I plan to visit.
I know, I'm a bit behind the times....

    My proposal:

    - 1 statistic point per lab (not per question)

    -  show them on the geocaching map

I don't mind that adventure lab caches do not show up on the map. If they are what you are going out to look for, they are easy enough to find using the correct app.
I do agree with 1 smiley total for completing the full lab cache adventure, not 3 or 5 or 10 per adventure. To me a lab cache adventure is no different than a Wherigo adventure or a multi-cache adventure. A cacher should not be awarded 1 smiley for finding a single stage of any of these types, only 1 smiley for completing the full adventure.
I'm sure there are others, like me, that have failed to complete a multi cache or a Wherigo cache for one reason or another, and didn't receive a smiley. That is easy enough to live with, in fact, it could give you a reason to revisit the adventure again.
I think 1 smiley per stage is ridiculous.

    • Get ready to log the first interplanetary trackable! The trackable will be unlocked sometime on March 10. Keep an eye out for the update on our Facebook or sign up for alerts on the trackable page! Remember, space travel can be challenging; so because of that, the exact time of the camera calibration has not been determined.

  10. I have seen events in areas that are limited to 20 person gatherings due to covid-19. They have been successful by scheduling one or two hour time slots per 20 attendees. First group leaves, next group arrives. This may allow you to have a successful event in your area without waiting for the 100 person threshold.
