I love novelty and this definetly falls into that category.

You definetly need a DB for all that.

The icon is a big plus that I can see. It also acts as a seral number. With the vast number of Coin "A"s out there the one you have that has PCXXXX stamped on it is actually unique. Indeed, trackable over non trackable is worth more because it does cost more to make them trackable. On a personal note... I just look for a design that I like. If it's trackable it just means that I am going to buy at least 2 or 3. 1 to keep, 1 to set loose, and 1 to leave unactivated for trade in a cache or by e-mail.

Excel and Access deal with data in the same way... they list information in tables full of columns and rows. Therefore, if you are only going to use the data for printing labels then Excel is going to be your easiest route. Databases are great, but I think it would be overkill for what you want to do. Anthus is exactly right about traffic. An Excel sheet can become gigantic and if you need to do anything with the data other than print labels it could become unmanagable. Another thing that databases are great for is if you have an easy way to import data into them. I dont believe that this is an easy feat with PayPal payments and it may not even be possible without a direct link to their database. (Not gonna happen.) Here is my suggestion: I have an Excel document and a Word document that can be used to print your labels. I have formated them to use Avery's 5260 lables. You will have to copy and paste the addresses into Excel and move them around so that the proper info falls under the right heading. Also I have made it so that the qty prints on the labels. I have heard that this helps when it comes time to stuff the envelopes. I will upload them soon... but it looks like FTP is down on the server I keep my stuff on. I will post a link once it comes back up.

I don't plan on making any LEs. Sorry. I might play around with other metals on another coin. Want to see how this one goes before complicating the process.

I can't hold out any longer. These coins will be sent to the mint very soon. This thread is not for preorders, just to let people see the design and know to look out for it. I wanted to go with a humorous theme on my first coin basicly because that kinda sums up my attitude. For those who don't know, Dendrophobia is the fear of trees; a fear that would make our little Recreational activity/hobby/sport/obsession pretty tough. I will be minting 500 initially and if there is enough demand I will ask the minters to do another run up to 1000. They will be trackable on Geocaching.com and have this icon. I am going to try to have them available in Feb... but depending on the time it takes to mint them it may be the beginning of March. Let me know what you think of my design and if you will be intrested in them. Once they are available for purchase I will inform you of how to get them by posting an update in this thread.

For this to work there needs to be 1 forum that coin folks can go to or else new coins won't get sold in the quanities necessary to keep making coins, (i.e. Break-Even). This is not an Anti-Groundspeak post (I like these forums, personally), I am just saying that if we want to keep the geocoin hobby alive, and people are not going to use Groundspeak's forums to post their coins, then we all need to agree on where we are going to go to find and post the information about this hobby. We just need a way to tell everyone where that place is... that's the hard part.

I had a similar idea about this type of a coin so I'm glad to se that it will possibly become a reality. As for hazzards, if it were a Memphis, TN based coin you could have the "Cache in the middle of a gang war" coin.

How quickly are coins of the $6-8 variety with 1000 available selling out? The market for geocoins is very intresting to me. Anywhere else a product that is selling this well would be going for $10-15 each, but since everyone deals with each other on a somewhat personal level, the prices are kept at a low level. People don't want to see such comments as, "So why is your coin priced so high?" However, after all coins are sold, the regular market's behaviour takes over. Supply goes way down and demand is way up. Thus folks on eBay are selling coins that go for $6-8 in presales for $20 and up. (Saw one that went for $50 today.) If you are looking for a solution, it is not to price the coins higher, but instead for people producing coins to get a better feel for what their initial supply should be. The only way to do this is for all the people that sell coins to publish their stats on how many coins they sold, what the average coin per sale was, how much they charged for each coin, and how soon did they sell out. Also, you would need to find a way to gauge how many people would have bought coins if there were more available. That last part would be a huge undertaking and require people to reply saying that they were intrested in "X" number of coins and also require you to troll eBay to see who is bidding on what. The easiest way to keep cost down and still ensure that people get what they want is to offer a presale for a limited amount of time and make whatever number you come up with. If everyone did this, however, I believe that the end of the geocoin craze would be in sight. If everyone had Coin "A" then what is the point? "Oh you have that Coin "A"... who doesn't?" It's the rare coins and the idea of being one of maybe 600 people to have a particular coin that keeps this craze alive. Needless to say, I suggest we keep putting caps on the number we are willing to produce. This is a fun hobby and I will do my part to continue supporting it. Maybe we need to tweak it a little, but not offer an unlimited presale.

The Memphis Zoo's Conservation Action Network. They make sure that those Lousianna Pine Snakes will be around to bite cachers. In all seriousness, caching is just an extension of my love for the outdoors, and one of the things that makes caching an adventure is taking in the various flora and fauna while on the way to the hide. C.A.N. is there using technology and science together to preserve the lands and animals that we enjoy, and sometimes take for granted. I think Groundspeak's initiatives such as CITO are doing a great job in helping clean up the only planet we have for a home and I believe that C.A.N. will help make sure that we have an environment to protect. Thanks for the complement, F&H. I have been pretty busy lately but that just gives me more time to come up with ideas. I have 2 solid ideas and also an idea for a series that will benefit a charity that I want to work with a fellow geocacher on. Another thing that is keeping me is that dang Database that I am trying to make for the front end on my website so that I don't oversell the coins. Anyway, this is the obverse that I have decided on for both of the coins I am working on. I hope you guys like it.

Ok... my new mission is to create an animated GIF of a coin being placed in a cache in bullet time (i.e. The Matrix).

Basicly if I want to do something quick and easy I'll do it in PSP. It's nothing in particular that I can't do with it... I just end up working on something and if it doesn't look right I'll play around with it in PS to see if that works better for me. At one point (like way back in 2000) I had to use PS for any layer work since the version of PSP I had did not have that functionality. But that's all been fixed now.
