  1. Thanks for your reply. you cant stop just "anywhere", but there are misc unofficial Pulloffs - 2 I am aware of that have caches. as far as making PQ's centered on reststops, then I would need to know where they all were in advance for each route I take through many states and many roads. Too much work for that. I was hoping a routable PQ was just that, but I guess not . Any idea how many segments are allowed or suggested max mileage to keep the segments on the road? the route I used in my example was only 250 miles and that was really bad, I cant see making a new routable PQ for each 20-30 miles, again. too much work. Im starting to think gsak might be the best solution.
  2. How do I go about getting an ACCURATE route pocket query? for example when planning to drive a long toll road, I would like to know of the caches accessible from that road and dont really care about the others close by. I create a PQ and give up to .2 distance ( which should include rest stops) and when the query runs it can be WAY off depending on the curves of the road. it seems the query doesn't really follow the exact road just point to point LARGE distances apart on the road so unless the road is straight alot is lost. I'll a link to a couple screen shots of a random spot along the NY State thruway. I looked at the same spot on the normal map and a couple caches should show within the .25 that I used for this query, but due to the "blue line" not following the actual road, they do not. Am I missing a setting or how can I fix this? Thanks CLICK HERE for a couple sample route PQ not following road - then click that picture for a larger picture
  3. OK, I dont know why this went the direction it did. Everyone has their own " I Like xxx" or "I hate XXX". Personally I LOVE biking 20 or 30 miles of rail trails grabbing caches tight along the edges jumping back on the bike them zooming to the next and repeat. I know most of you dont like that. What I hate is urban caches. I cant stand looking for caches in cities, around businesses, or near houses. BUT I understand lots of people like those. Thats OK I dont get all over those people or the ones that place them. The 35 I want to place are along a 8 mile section of "rail trail" that has not been "developed" - That is to say, the ties and rails were removed years ago, the "trail" is closer to a 2 foot wide overgrown foot path that people Bike, Walk, and Ski on. this is located out in the middle of no where, so there is no "story" to tell that I am aware of. Also placing 35 in 8 miles DOES leave room for other to place in the same area if they choose SO, ONE of the reasons for me placing this "Boring" series is for Winter access. How many of you have gone caching on Ski's (or snowshoes which I find much easier)? if the caches are not all above a few feet they will be buried under a couple feet of snow (which is the reason I said all the same height-but thats boring?). also imagine trying to manipulate ski's in/out/around trees up/down steep hills to either side of the tracks ( Im sure you know how they loved fill and rock cuts when laying tracks). Another reason I wanted to place these is to let another cacher that has placed Hundreds in this same manor a chance to FIND instead of placing.. Since everyone was voicing their "do's and dont's" I just wanted to let you know my why..
  4. Uhhh.. Sorry I asked. So you guys dont sound in favor of the 3,765 bison tubes I hid in every 7th sidewalk crack through out the city? -- Just kidding. I'm keeping it at the 35 mark on an old train track section. Thanks for the replies though..
  5. I'm in the process of placing 35 +/- caches all the same container, height, hint, ect along a rail trail. the only thing that really differs from each placement is the name. Is there a way that I'm missing to bulk List these for publication/review or do I really need to go through all the same steps/pages for each, one at a time?
  6. I'm still getting daily emails for the discovery of these. Here is a good one I just got. The day this guy "discovered" my TB's, which were at the event in Wisconsin this guy also Logged finding a cache near Reno Nevada.. WOW!! that is one VERY active person caching in Reno NV then getting to the all Day event in Wisconsin the same day!! Unfortunately it seems he was so Busy writing down TB numbers that he didnt get ANY caches at or anywhere near the event-- Even Better is he has just short of 3,000 cache finds and 9,000 tb's!! thats AMAZING someone can average about 3tb's in EVERY cache they find!!
  7. As an owner, I find the PROPER USE of discovery helpful. A lot of people dont like to move TB's or if the TB has its "goal" written on it ( which my opinion is they should) and the cacher isnt going that direction, then they should discover it. This type of discovery helps by letting the owner know the tb is still alive and well and the finder still gets a 'found' point without taking the tb off in the wrong direction (another of my pet peeves) just to get that point.
  8. That is sad, but at least by using BaseOverApex's "discovered" list, we know who used the list's with out actually seeing the tb's in person. I clicked on 1/2 dozen of those names at random, the lowest TB's they had "found/discovered" was 950, which makes me wonder how many hundreds of tb's were in the list?? If I only had the time to copy all those names in to a list, that could be emailed to the owners of the other 'discovered' tb's and we could All delete all those entries.. or maybe if those people own caches we could log "DNF at West Bend Bash" for every one of their caches -OK, I'm only kidding about that. Dang Cheaters..
  9. I am STILL getting emails of discoveries, and unfortunately for me, somehow I was UNluckily enough to have a COUPLE of my TB's at that event. My phone's email doesnt stop buzzing.. It has really rubbed me the wrong way now. Does anyone know of a way to Bulk remove all these discoveries? I want them gone now, although I will feel bad for any who actually did "see" it. if no Bulk deletion, can I "disable" the tb's?
  10. Is it normal practice to give out a file containing tracking numbers at an event? for days now I have been hammered with nonstop notifications of "discovery" from "West Bend Ca$h Ba$h" some of these logs state they were given a file list of tb's while attending, others state they got the numbers from "online trackables site of trackables that attended the 2013 West Bend Cache Bash" -- I'm not overly happy that either of these lists exist. I feel if you "discover" a tb you should actually see it in person and note the number yourself. ( if not, Hey I have a list of many thousand caches, so can I log those as found?) I assume nothing can be done about this? I would love to delete all the logs, which must number well over a hundred, but that wouldnt be fair to those that may have seen tb's in person.. Just looking for others thoughts on this practice..
  11. I dont have mapsource or Basecamp, so GE it was. that seems to work good. Thanks for the suggestions. Often I find myself looking for a hike on the spur of the moment So I would still like to find someway to do it "live" online vs downloading caches and creating a KML for GE but until I find that solution, google earth it is. Thanks!
  12. Thanks, but I would like something where I can click each cache on the map and it continually updates the distance. I know thats not extremely accurate but in cache maid its usually is pretty close so I thought there might be other programs/plug ins that do the same.
  13. Is there a way to calculate total distance from cache A to Cache B to Cache C Ect online? I like to know a hiking distance before starting ( or even to determine if I want to go) and so far the only way I found is using CacheMaid on my android which works great but requires downloading a PQ or waiting for all the caches in a search area to download and process. I would prefer to find a way to do it from my desktop while online, or maybe GSAK or an iphone app? (I dont use the android anymore, and just dig it out for the distance calculations)
  14. I passed that on and he said thats works.. Thanks!
  15. Thanks, I looked at both of those on their websites and youtube videos, and I dont think either looks very promising. How about software that just reads the 'founds' from the gps and allows logs to be written from that list, and other features, if any, would be secondary. trying to find a way to log found caches downloaded from the gps is the most important.. otherwise I'm thinking of having him check in to a cheapo used netbook that I hope would run GSAK
  16. I have a friend that has a MAC book and just got a Oregon 450T. Is there software that will allow him to drag a box on a map then load caches within that box and send to the Oregon AND most of all, download the caches he has marked as found on the Oregon, then enter his log info then upload to Geocaching site. (both like GSAK does) I know NOTHING about MAC's so sorry for this basic question.
