  1. I am quickly approaching my 3K cache and will be in the Kingsport/Bristol area about the time I reach it. Can someone suggest a really good cache in that area that would be 3K worthy? I am not a big hiker but do enjoy visiting caches that take me to interesting and beautiful sites. I think Max Patch Bald was one of my milestone caches.
  2. I had a similar experience. A new cacher posted a "should be archieved" because my cache was not available 24/7 even though the hours were clearly stated on the cache page.
  3. I turn off the compass on my 60CSX so that would not be an issue in my opinion. I cached with an Etrex for a couple of years until it came apart and then I bought the 60CSX. It did the job good enough unless you were under trees.
  4. Don't make her do the driving if you want to make a good first impression. Pick her up in Mobile and drive on over to Fairhope. The caches there are fun and easy for a newbie.
  5. I downloaded this software and it has said "Getting your location. Please wait..." for over an hour now. Is that normal?

  7. Anyone caching with a Samsung Delve?
  8. My biggest problem is that I just don't have the spare time to devote to two hobbies. I had to make a choice! Sure, I miss the virtuals which I loved, but now I spend all my spare time geocaching and if I added Waymarking, I would have to take time away from geocaching. With the busy lives we lead, one is all I have time for.
  9. The easiest way that I've found to make a living geocaching is by levying a tax on gasoline used for caching.

  11. This is a direct quote from "www.dummies.com" in relation to geocaching. [A signature item is a unique item that a geocacher leaves in a cache that's his or her way of saying, "I was here." It's sort of like the Lone Ranger and his trademark silver bullet. Signature items can be anything from a printed business card to a handmade clay sculpture. (To give you some ideas, the Michigan Geocaching Organization has a database of photos of signature items on its Web site.
  12. There have been some Silver Bullets (fake gun bullets) that are Geocaching swag placed in caches around here. They are ordered from a geocaching supplier. They have no value or trackability, but have geocaching written on them. I don't know the purpose of them either, other than just something else to add to your collection of geo stuff.
  13. OOPS.... First of all, let me encourage you to hang in there. Most of us did not have good experiences the first time unless we were with a "seasoned" cacher. Believe me, when you do find that first one, the excitement will be worth all the trouble you've had. Second, I'm not familiar with the GPS you are using, but it sounds like you made need one that gets you closer to the cache. Is your GPS more for road navigation? Do you know a cacher who could go with you? Also, you might like to go find a few without your grandchildren so that they do not get frustrated with the game. Then you could take them back and let them find them. Welcome to the game. In a year, you'll look back at your first experiences and laugh at yourself!!!
  14. Personally, if someone is going to contact me about a cache, I would prefer it be through gc.com unless it is one of my close geofriends. And I don't think it is inappropriate if you email someone kindly and just say, "I am going to be visiting your area soon and was wondering the status of this cache. It looks like one I would really enjoy." That makes the cache owner feel good about his cache and not personally attacked. I think it is all in how you word it.
  15. When you get out of your vehicle and try to "zero" in on a cache, you are going to want a handheld device. I use my computer in the car to get me to the location, but then a handheld is usually needed to get me to the exact spot. I used a cheap Garmin Legend for several years before upgrading.
  16. So are any still active in the US?
  17. If I have helped one toward his goal, I like to see if he ever reaches it.
  18. Definitely the AGA--Alabama Geocaching Association This group definitely has been a lifesaver to me. After my husband died, I needed new interests to get me to move on with my life. I was introduced to geocaching and soon met up with this group of people. They have meant more to me than you can imagine and have gotten me to get out and do things I never imagined. Thanks, AGA!!!!
  19. When did GC.com actually go online and what is the date of the first geocache listed?

    States Map

I tried to add more states to my map of cache finds, but the link takes me to something that is not geocache related. Anyone have a correct link?

    76csx

Are the numbers any bigger on either one? My eyes are getting older....
  22. For those of us with older eyes, are the numbers on the 76 larger than the 60csx?
  23. This is a good unit for a younger person. My older eyes cannot see the black on grey very well. I would prefer a color unit.
  24. I am going on a Carnival cruise next week to Nassau, Belize City, Costa Maya, and Cozemel. Can anyone recommend some easy caches within walking distance of the docks? I don't want to spend my entire trip looking for geocaches since this is my daughter's Graudation trip, but would like to log some easy finds and feed my habit. Thanks,
