  1. A Danish cacher found one of our puzzles recently so I checked out their profile. Some people really love puzzle caches. Keep puzzle alive. They make caching so much more interesting.
  2. You could also look for low difficulty ratings and mid - high terrain ratings.
  3. Yes, I can confirm it is as slow as ever for a weekend. It's just as well we didn't listen when GS kept telling us there was no need for an off-line database.
  4. My second nearest is in Nairnshire (it's really in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire) over 400 miles away. Interestingly Herefordshire only has two listed. We also were not contacted, so it was a nice surprise to be chosen (by whatever method).
  5. I'm guessing someone at GS has been messing around again as it's miraculously all working now.
  6. See the last log on this cache. It was logged a few minutes ago (I got the notification), but being for May 2008 why is it after all the 2009 finds? The last thing I want is a lazy logger at the top of my page.
  7. Had the same problem for no reason a few weeks ago!!!! Deleted all overlays/routes but same issue. Mapsource support were "chocolate teapot" so re-installed Mapsource and all OK now? Using Version 5.3.2 Build 1009. Regards Nick (Beds Clangers) I'm totally confused. Memory Map and Mapsource are two completely different products from different vendors.
  8. Huge congratulations to The Flying Boots and Wrighty on their 1,000th cache today at Hippos Below (5/5). It was a blast and an unforgettable day out.
  9. Surely reviewers have a tool which tells them if the new cache is within 528' of an existing cache or physical stage? Don't alarms go off and stuff? Or am I being nieve?
  10. My experience exactly - it returned a big fat nothing, in the middle of central London where there's caches everywhere. I'd like it to work though, as it's the sort of thing I've wanted for ages. Any hints/tips? I tried running it with Memory Map in the background as has been suggested elsewhere, but still nothing. Lee You did load the Windows Mobile version (not Java) right? I've had no problem at all on a TyTN II. I don't need to run MM.
  11. You have assumed that all caches are disabled because they need maintenance. Some caches are disabled for long periods for legitimate reasons. I have one myself which I am expecting to be inaccessible for 6 months. This is where the reviewer's discretion can't be replaced by an automatic process.
  12. So what will the new term be instead of PAF then? MAS? (Message A Stranger) Needs a bit of refining, but I like the way you can download the maps onto your PDA to save bandwidth. Very poor maps though. My village isn't even on there and half the roads round here are missing even at the most detailed level. Now, if I just got a 3G signal in more than 25% of the places I cache...
  13. Found this one today. Great to see an original thread BTW.
  14. Ordnance Survey maps in the UK (which is what Memory Map uses) are superior to anything available for dedicated GPSr units here. OS maps are essential for a serious walker here as they are very detailed. You will need a Windows Mobile device to use it effectively. There are many GPSr enabled WM devices from manufacturers like HTC, Mio, HP, E-ten etc. You would need to check that your licence allows you to use MM on a PDA.
  15. I recently had a geocoin held hostage in a Geocoin Bank in Spain. It was one of 130 geocoins in the cache at the time. It just sat there being "discovered" (as did all the other geocoins) until the cache owner moved it at my request. The coin now says it can only be logged if you move it and "discovered" logs will be removed. Our UK reviewers have wisely stated that they will not allow "1 for 1" rules. I would ignore any such "rule" anyway.
  16. In my early days I did this, but soon realized it was wrong. If everyone only took a TB when they left one then a few caches would always have TB's in them, which means that many other caches would never have TBs in them. I wholeheartedly agree with SUp3rFM & Cruella. I wish more cachers would take this approach. Understanding that TBs belong to their owners, not the cache they are in or a prospective finder is the key.
  17. 200g, breathable as eVent, incredibly waterproof and glowing reviews. The price is good too. I'll be ordering very soon. Thanks.
  18. I just got a mtn bike a few weeks ago and I'm lovin' it. As far as caching goes it's great for mainenance trips and I've got a couple of mountain cache visits lined up on bike trails. There are also a couple of caches I have visited in the past that are particularly suitable, so I'll be re-visiting them. I can't wait. It also gives Bob (my dog) a chance to really let go.
  19. The term "Muggle" came from Mugglewort Wood in the Forest of Dean, near J.K. Rowling's childhood home.
  20. Only this week a friend was telling me how one of his caches had gone missing. It turned out that a farmer's dog had retrieved the cache and taken it back to the farmhouse where the farmer created an account and logged the find. After this unusual introduction to caching he went on to attend the cache owners event the next week and is now apparently hooked. I assume you are referring to Merlin? Some humans could learn a lot from his great caches too. Sid and Bob have also set a cache.
  21. The owner has apparently moved the geocoin for me. I've just noticed that I've got a TB in a cache in Florida with 31 trackables in it. If I ever visit a cache like this I will pick up every single trackable and move them on. I urge you to do the same. These caches should be outlawed by Groundspeak.
  22. 21 miles on the England / South Wales border. Take Bristol out of the equation (we never cache there) and it's much further. We had a cache published 10 miles from home last week. I can't remember the last time that happened. Quality is far more important than quantity anyway.
  23. What do you recommend as a very light weight, fully waterproof and breathable jacket or kagool to stick at the bottom of a rucksack whilst mountain walking? It's not meant for use when I know it's going to be wet. I've been looking at the Berghaus Paclite, but I'm not sure what else there is out there.
  24. How do you understand it is? If you look at GC1HX2H and GC1CXKR they are both bonus caches very near to each other. The first is a multi, the second a puzzle/unknown. The difference is that you have to find traditional caches in order to find the multicache and puzzles/unknown caches to find the puzzle/unknown bonus. I think we would all be happy with the puzzle/unknown bonus, but the stance on the multicache was " Strictly speaking the guidelines say a multi must have the locations of the clues/stages on the page which technically GC1HX2H does by giving the cache name where the clue is."
