  1. Wow. The images in Google Earth were just blurs before the update out here in the sticks in west Gloucestershire. Now they're as good as Local Live at last. I do agree that the long shadows do detract badly from the image though.
  2. I go through belt clips for my Garmin GPSmap60 CSx at a fair rate and they're a ridiculous price for what they are. That's around £9 each plus delivery. Today I took delivery of a car charger for my PDA, it also has a bunch of other bits like univeral mains charger, AA battery extender, USB hotsync cable etc etc AND a belt clip. It's not identical to the Garmin one but it's so close you wouldn't tell the difference unless you held them side by side. Now, here's the thing. The whole bundle cost £9 including post from the USA. These belt clips must cost pennies to make and it made me wonder if anyone knew of anywhere else where they were sold at reasonable prices, so I didn't have to get ripped off because it was being sold as a GPS accessory.
  3. The BIG difference is that the CSx uses SiRF III technology, which means it streets ahead of the Legend and any of the eTrex range - even the older CS does not use this. In laymans terms, it will hold a signal under almost any conditions and it will give a more accurate reading. If you buy a legend you will only wish you bought a CSx at a later date and you will then only spend more cash upgrading again. I guarantee you. I tend to get to the cache location with compass off, then switch it on to get me that last few feet. It is useful, but certainly not essential. You want Topo Great Britain V2 for geocaching and walking as it shows tracks and paths as well as roads. It is also routeable on GPS (I know you said you may not need that, but it can't be a bad thing). Costs about £145. Be very wary of import duty. Some auctions guarantee paying import duty if / when you get collared. I don't know if / how this works though.
  4. The guy holding it looks very happy anyway.
  5. It's a shame that they couldn't have contacted you though. One of my favourite TBs is Smiley Miley the annoying noisy keyring. The idea is that it's so annoying, you have to keep it as long as you can until you can stand it no more.
  6. That's right. But at the current exchange rate that equates to about 57 UK caches.
  7. You can't compare the UK to the States (fight the urge to say "thank goodness"), but if you've never seen this guys profile it may make you realise you're not quite as obsessed as you thought you were.
  8. If I'm out for a days walking I take a daysack, but that's mainly for food, drink, clothing etc. On a normal geocaching trip it's camera and GPSr on the belt (with lanyard) and the rest (PDA, laminated memory map, pencil, TB's, phone, batteries) in cargo pants (argh Americanism!) or coat pockets. Keys are normally in a zip up or buttoned pocket. Calling cards in camera case. PDA is in a wallet, so I don't need to carry a seperate one. I very rarely trade, so that makes it easier. Travel light, move fast.
  9. After moving Boatman's Whistle TB I was contacted by it's German owner to thank me, so I took the opportunity to as why the TB had not been logged for nearly 18 months. This is her reply: It was found by a couple from England at Majorica. After finding the cache the couple divorced and the TB left at the wife. So I wrote more than one time to the name of the geocacher. After more than one year he answered me and he explained the situation. He promised me to get back the TB from his ex-wife. After that he asked a friend for hiding the TB in a new cache. The friend was not able to log the TB, so he asked me ... and at the end I loggend the TB in the new cache. I hope Boatman's Whistle will now survive for a long journey. It just shows that they can turn up eventually. I would look on their profile to see if they've been active and when they last logged on to GC.com You have been much more patient than I would have been.
  10. Image Zoom is very cool, though I'm not sure yet if it's just a gimmick or not. It's a shame that GC.com don't add some of these enhancements to their pages. In some cases it would mean they would have less of a hit on their resources. Love the OS link script. Simple, but brilliant.
  11. Are you an AOL customer by any chance? Maybe... who wants to know? And why? It's just that I've never heard the term "Screen name" used by anyone except AOL. That's all.
  12. Are you an AOL customer by any chance?
  13. It's one of those strange questions like why did/do people buy/use iPods, VHS tapes, MS-DOS and now IE 6, when there are far superior products around. The answer is marketing. Once you start using Firefox you'll wonder why you ever messed around with that clucky old IE 6 - and let's not even talk about IE 7. I uninstalled it pretty sharpish. It's simple things like the use of tabs, rather than opening a new window each time and being able to stick my very favourite bookmarks on toolbar buttons that are so user friendly. Looking foward to checking out some of the other bits. Great thread. Share the knowledge.
  14. As you say, "different folks for different strokes". My least liked are well camoed, park and grabs. I enjoy a scenic walk / hike with a good size container, so it's easily findable. I'd far rather we walking than searching.
  15. Mine fried instantly. I could no longer write to it. Sound like you should be OK.
  16. Cachemate is compatible with Palm OS 3.0 and later, so it will run on pretty much any Palm device. You can check the OS at palminfocenter.
  17. Although I have and Ultra II I certainly won't be trying to find out if it does work now.
  18. There are quite a few Ferraris that have a wow factor.
  19. Would I be able to log it twice if I saw two different red cars. If it were an approved cache, yes, I would log it! Oh dear. That's very sad.
  20. That's cool, but I wouldn't advise buying a card reader for this if you don't otherwise need one. The 2GB card will hold the whole of Topo, so you only ever need to do this once.
  21. SanDisk Ultra II is a faster card, but is NOT compatible. See my post above. Garmin took a long, long time to tell us this was incompatable, by which time I had found out the hard way. I've never heard of SanDisk microSD Extreme. I have the regular SanDisk (1GB version of the one in shr00m's link) and this works perfectly. I am not aware of any statement from Garmin that this card is not compatible. Transflash is the legacy name for the media type. It really denotes a slower card, but is often used interchangably with the term microSD.
  22. This is a joke, right? I have 50-60 trigpoints visited with photos. So I can log 50-60 more cache finds? Someone's having a laugh. You need to visit TrigpointingUK.com if you want to record trigpoints and Geocaching.com if you want to log geocaches. Don't let's get them mixed up. I'm thinking of creating a cache where you can log when you see a red car or maybe whenever you feel like it. Do you think some people would log that too? Madness.
  23. I saw a brilliant camo bag yesterday at Spring View(GC110BF). It was one leg of a child's pair of combat trousers. No sewing required, good recycling and 2 bags for each pair. As Will wears these all the time I have placed a banning order on any being thrown out.
  24. This is one of my very favourite sites. You can learn much about you locality from it. It's also important that people proof the geographs as not everything on there is correct. Some of the photos were taken a long time ago so it's understandable that inaccuracies creep in. Have you noticed that Barry Hunter's been involved with this. TrigpointingUK.com has to be one of my other favourite sites. Good on you Barry.
