The only reason not to buy Topo, if you have a CSx, would be the cost. If you're going to rely on maps alone I don't see why you would spend money on a mapping GPSr when an eTrex H would do fine. I did read on here several months ago that Topo can be found for around £80 now, which is a bargain in my book. To put it in perspective, if you bought all the paper maps to cover the UK it would cost over £3,500. And take up one heck of a space too. I love the CSx/Topo combination. I have used it extensively for over 2 years and feel Topo gets a very undeserved bad press. It's not perfect, but there's nothing to stop you carrying a map, which ever solution you use.

What's the best way to load the list of finders into GSAK?

I'll type less next time and maybe I won't end up being pre-empted every time I respond to a question. -

I assume you mean the logs from before you were loading PQs into GSAK. If so, you can use the macro AddLogs.gsk. You need to run it against each of the caches you own and it populates all the logs for that listing. -
Don't buy the cards with maps installed on them as they work out much more expensive and you can't use the maps on the PC. 2GB microSD cards cost next to nothing these days. I just bought a 1/2GB Sandisk microSD for a trade item, as it was £1.50. Most walkers and cachers use Topo GB, so just shop around for the best price, as that certainly won't be the on the Garmin site.

Is it just me, or is the site REALLY slow this morning. I'm trying to log a few caches and it's like pulling teeth. I usually do it on a Saturday evening, but I assume it's not normally this bad on a Sunday - or is it?

Sounds a great idea to me. Originality should be encouraged.

Geocaching mentioned on Radio 2 today!
SidAndBob replied to Alboy's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
We heard it in the car on the way for a days caching at 08:45. They were getting people to text in with interesting activities to do this summer. I believe they said the text was from FredCat1. -
Check out this link. Unfortunately land owners have no requirement to place dog friendly stiles.

We haven't seen an Adder since... ooh, let me think... yesterday. Our second whilst caching. We have Wild Boar round here. I have bumped into them, but not whilst caching. One was shot at a school earlier this year and 3 domestic dogs have been found to be savagely killed by them. Although not proven it is widely thought that there are big cats too. I have personally seen several sheep kills consistent with those from big cats. Stags have even been known to attack on occassion.

I was just about to post when I saw this and thought I already had posted - but it was someone else. This is exactly the same for me except I use Memory Map instead of Mamory Map. I even use a TyTN II. Are you my long lost brother? As an IT guy, many of these issues sound remarkably simple to resolve. Does anyone use the Zip Code search? I can't see what use it could ever be.

Mine's been like that for a while, but I know where the buttons are without looking at them, so it doesn't bother me. I think mine has been caused by the buttons rubbing against something, as I wear it on a belt clip. It might even be the Garmin case that I sometimes keep it in.

Caching with google earth on a O2 XDA Orbit
SidAndBob replied to Dangermouse 1968's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I assume you've configured your GPS within Google Maps to COM4:/4800? I've not had a problem. -
New paperless caching unit required....
SidAndBob replied to harrogate hunters's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Don't forget the Vodafone V1615 and also the Kaiser. O2 is XDA Orbit I think. Why they can't stick to one name, I don't know. -
How can that possibly be a 1.5 difficulty.
-
Thanks. With the aid of the route description from the link at the top of the thread I managed to plot the route, which matches this exactly. The only tricky bit of planning is from Pen-y-ghent to Dismal Hill. Sounds fun.

I use a CSx with Topo for caching, but I also carry a PDA/phone with Memory Map for any tricky navigation and checking PRoW, though this is more for hiking than Geocaching. I also usually plan my route on the PC (Memory Map) before I set out and send the route to both devices. Once-upon-a-time I had an eTrex and used to use it with OziExplorer and printouts, but it was pretty hopeless in comparison.

I doubt it's the program, but more likely the O/S on your PDA. I have no problems with TT on WM6.

Lost TB............Unless you know better
SidAndBob replied to fatblokecaver's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Why archive it? When you're sure it's gone just send out the COPY tag. When you buy a TB you are buying the trackable number. Even if you don't have the copy tag there's no reason why you can't make your own or even write/paint/engrave the number on something else. Just make sure it's very clear that it is a TB, as most people will look for the recognisable tag. The name and description can be recycled too if you wish. -
Memory Map does have it's own satellite maps.

You could update the coords on those caches (within GSAK) to be the same location as the cache before you did them. This way your count is still correct, but mileage omitted.

He may look tough, but we all know that The Beast that Barks is just a big softy really.

Putting stats on your profile page

We use GSAK. -
Here's a link to one of the postings regarding the problem. Seems to affect most people, though not everyone. It's easy enough to get around, but a pain if it takes you by surprise.
-
Are you sure? Never had any problem putting any of them onto cards.... I had that issue, not so much with copying the map over, but trying to open it when I needed it. Worked fine when split. That's the one. It's to do with O/S (operating system, not Ordnance Survey ) file size limits. It's documented all over the net. Only effects the largest maps fortunately.
-
Or as someone said earlier this week, you can use Softick Card Export. It's not free, but saves taking cards in and out. Also some of the larger 1:50K maps need splitting, but that's another issue.
