  1. Hey Everybody. Well, the weather is getting nicer, the ice and snow is disappearing and in the spring time a young man’s thoughts turn to Geocacheing! Since I’ve been sitting on my big fat butt for most of the winter, I’ve got some ground to catch up on, and so I am proud to announce….DirtRunner’s 1st Cache Machine of 2004!! <Monster Truck Voice> Be THERE! Be THERE! Be THERE! Be THERE! Be THERE! Be THERE! Be THERE! Be THERE! </Monster Truck Voice> Anyway, Geocaching is fun but Geocaching with others is even better. So please consider this an open invitation to all of you to please come and join me for the first run of the season March 26th, 2004 (That’s a Friday) General Location: Port Hope Area Start Time: About 9:30AM (ish) Caches to be hit as follows…. When I read the thread from Res2100 for the Grand Trunk get together I thought that was just the best idea I had read in a long time so I wanted to extend the hospitality to my run, maybe it will become a tradition So PM me or reply your interest in this thread, all offers of shotgun will be gratefully accepted. So clear off your calendars, I hope you one and all can make it. DirtRunner.
  2. How about letting just the owner see who is watching and see what the response is? That is a great idea! I like that compromise alot DirtRunner.
  3. You're right, you did. I can't blame you for hesitating in removing it again. However, like RuffRidr, I only use the find count as a general idea of a person's finds, because it's accuracy is highly suspect due to the nature of the number. As he suggested, and has been suggested before, I'd like to recommend that the find count numbers associated with cache logs be the number of finds that person had at the time of that find. I.E, my first find would have a (1) after it and my 100th find would have a (100) after it. In my layman's mind, this would also reduce server load, as the number would be totally static. I realize there might be people who object to this idea, and I realize this post is slightly off-topic.. but when the time comes, a separate topic could be started to guage opinions. Jamie You know, I like that idea. It would relieve server load and give some good information at the same time. Just change the old title from "DirtRunner (103 found)" total to say --something like "Dirtrunner (Find: xx)" I know how many finds I have, and it would be good to have something like this to let me know generally when it was I originally found it. Looking back I could see that Cache X was my first find (awwwwww isn't that cute?) and my 100th find was cache Y (horah!) Just a thought DirtRunner
  4. I like the logo, but there is something not quite right about it. Maybe it's just me but I think it would look better if the trillium were aligned with the first leaf pointing straight up at 90 degrees instead of following the compass. As it stands now, the logo kind of makes me want to tilt my head to look at it for some reason, and maybe a slight rotation of the trillium in the center of the compass would resolve this. Thanks DirtRunner.
  5. My last cache was submitted at 11:47 AM and Approved and listed at 12:12 PM. I love my approver DirtRunner.
  6. Evil ? No...I'm mostly just mis-understood Lefty and proud of it. DirtRunner
  7. I got this e-mail today... -------- hey there ... i am writing this to see if you were interested in joining our MLB travel bug race that starts in 3 weeks. of course, its completely free. look at waypoint GCHG9T if interested and let me know. if not, perhaps you may have a friend(s) that may be interested in it. if so, please pass this along to them. sorry to have bothered you with this email - i am just trying to get as many racers from around the world entered into the race. its going to be a fun race and its never been done before. if this goes as well as planned, we will be having the football stadium race come spring time. thanks for your time, best, corey Team PEZ ------------------------------------------------------------ Forward abuse complaints to: contact@geocaching.com --------- Before I report the abuse I want to make sure that I was not the only one who got this e-mail. If I am the only one then, the mail was directed to me and I don't know why they thought I was interested but so be it. If everyone got it then we have a serious issue here. I do not want to be spamed via this web site. Am I the only one who got this ? DirtRunner.
  8. I guess it would be any cache that required you to leave the house and travel to a location as indicated by the coordinates specified. Thus, if my terminology is correct, Virtuals would be included in this count but Reverse caches would not. As for Keystone's Remarks...uhhhhhh I Dunno! How about just take your current total finds (minus reverse caches) and divide by the total currently available. Lets keep it simple for now (and yes, ultimately flawed) until Geocaching becomes a professional sport or recognized by the IOC. Jeez! You guys make me work hard for it! DirtRunner. Edited to address Keystone's Question.
  9. Oh No! Another Stat topic!!! How about this? Since there is a pronounced correlation between the number of finds a cacher may have and the general closeness of the caches to them, it might be interesting to derive a ratio between the two to see how thorough the cacher in question actually is. Basically, if you have 6,122 caches within 100 miles of you and 244 finds, that would give you a Find-to-Availability Ratio of (244 / 6122) or 3.98 % Therefore, the higher the percentage the more thorough a cacher you are. I know that from my home co-ordinates there are 1119 caches within 100 miles of me, with my 103 finds would yield a (103/1119) = 9.2% FTA. Not bad I suppose. The theory behind this stat is just because you have “X” amount of finds, this total number does not necessarily mean that you are a super cacher if there is a high concentration of caches where you live. Likewise, if you have a low number of finds, your score might still be respectable if there is a low concentration of caches in your area. I.E. you do not have a low score because you don’t get out very often, you have a restricted score because of limited availability. I know with me, now that I have cleared out any cache that I might have once just dashed out after supper and snagged, I have to plan my outings more carefully. And when I go, just don’t go for one, I go for 3 or 4 of them. And since this takes a certain amount of time to grab this series of caches, I do not get the chance to get out there as often as I would like because of the time involved in planning them in the first place. Thus, my caching has really slowed down as of late. (Granted, the weather has something to do with it also) Anyway, what is your FTA? It would be interesting to see what some of the higher find cachers total out to, as well as some of the cachers with a lower number of finds. Thanks for the time DirtRunner.
  10. I thought you died and went to N*vic@che ? hmmmmmmm DirtRunner
  11. This has all my finds minus those archived. Not bad I guess. DirtRunner.
  12. I thought I would be able to do it but, sadly, I am on call that weekend. Looks like more for everyone else. Grrrrrrrrrr DirtRunner.
  13. Oh There it is!!! Thank you very much. DirtRunner.
  14. I truly appreciate everything you do Jeremy, but I liked the old maps for the TB's because they gave an overall view of everywhere the TB has been, now with the new maps I get a couple at a time and when I select "next" there really is no idea where the bug travelled to next -- Geographically speaking. Is there any way to get the old "overall" TB travel map back and then you would also see the zoomed in travel map is you should so choose? I really miss being able to see where a bug has been at a glance. Thanks DirtRunner.
  15. If you wish, I would GLADLY mail you some Geocaching stickers or other gear to trade you for RUSSIAN GEOCACHING stickers or Shirts! I think that it would be great to have "Russian Geocache Gear" or stickers on my car! Please feel free to contact me through Geocaching, and I will mail the items directly to your home. I think it would be a great trade! Sincerly, Pete Count me in! Come my Russian Friends! Let us contact each other and trade some English Geocaching gear for some Russian Geocaching sweetness. It would be totally cool if I could get my hands on some of that gear. Thanks DirtRunner.
  16. Actually that's not true... I was in the middle east for 2 and a half years and the use of GPS is not only considered wise but often crucial for survival. Once you enter the deserts or any of the empty quarters the landmarks disappear pretty fast so the GPS is your one and only lifeline. So, no, it's not as bad as what you allude to. At least not in the gulf DirtRunner.
  17. Merry Christmas one and all. Best of the season and I wish you all a happy new year and prosperous 2004. My best to you all DirtRunner.
  18. I do not like this SOGA idea one bit... ** Hold On...Let me think for a minute.... No, I don't think so... I don't know you guys from a hole in the head, I've never met you, what do you know about my concerns? What do you care? You do not speak for me and if anyone asks I will tell them as much DirtRunner. P.S. The most important thing about a society or group is not leadership, it’s inclusion. I see you have yet to acquire either.
  19. I'm sorry for asking this, I truly do not wish to be stupid here but... Is a conservation reserve the same as a conservation area ? I am sorry, I need to know becuase if we take the area around Port Perry here there are some fine conservation areas, is it the province that runs these ? And if so, what does that mean for the caches already out there ? I am sorry for my ignorance but I truly do not know. Thanks DirtRunner.
  20. How could he place a cache if he does not own a GPS ? Just Wonderin' DirtRunner
  21. Any chance of a humble Canadian Getting in on the Action here ? Should we make it a North American Race ? With 3 additional stops in the Atlantic, Ontario and BC Provinces ? Just Wonderin' DirtRunner.
  22. I think it would be safe if you kept the vocabulary to what you would hear on television before 21:00. Safest for everyone DirtRunner.
  23. Hi Everyone. I have a Travel Bug, The Good Professor, who reached his intended goal this year and made it to China. Specifically the Snow Mountain Cache by Savoy. Wouldn’t you know my bad luck that by the time the Professor got there the cache was gone but the awesome cacher Ooga Booga would not be denied and created the cache again at the location just to make sure that the professor would reach his goal. The coordinates where the Professor is is: N 30° 39.153 E 103° 09.533, since that time the cacher Savoy has placed a new cache but the coordinates are in a different spot than where the cache was originally. I would like to Bring the Professor back home to Canada. But I think this is going to be impossible now but I thought I would try to write to see if any intrepid cachers out there in China would go to the coordinates listed in this mail and see if the Professor is still there, and if so, bring him down from the mountain and into a more readily available cache to start the long road home. If the Professor gets found, I will update his TB Page to state that he wants to go home to Canada now and would ask the person finding him to update his TB passport to reflect the same. I know this is a tall order, and I don't expect much to come of it, but I have to try. If anyone going or living in China can help me retrieve the Professor, I would be most Grateful. Thanks for your Time DirtRunner.
