  1. I really miss having the option to display the cache names. I've been printing out the map and then writing in the names by hand. Not very efficient. This seems like it should be a pretty basic feature but from the sounds of it, there aren't any plans to bring it back any time soon.
  2. Having the same Problem with my Explorist. Tried everything. Thinking it may have something to do with the upgrade. Rats! Really wanted to go out today! Anything on this? I just tried to download a PQ to my eXplorist 500 and my computer says it doesn't recognize the USB Device. Is this the same problem or something different? It worked fine last week and nothing has changed with my computer.
  3. I'm trying to reload a detailed map area on my eXplorist 500. I haven't needed to do this since I first did it several years ago. When I start the MapSend CD, the only choices it gives me for a GPS are: Meridian Gold/Platinum/Marine 5.34 SporTrak Map/Pro 5.34 Meridian Color 5.34 SporTrak Color 5.34 SporTrak Pro Marine 5.34 Does anyone know which of these models corresponds with my eXplorist 500? I'm fairly certain I found out which one to choose when I first did this but now I can't remember. I don't remember having to download anything extra or having to do any updates on the GPS. Thanks for your help.
  4. I've had no problem with their service. My zoom in and out buttons quit working on my 500 - about two weeks after the warranty ran out. I gave them a call and was told it would not be a problem, they would take care of it for me. I received a reference number. and was told to write it on the outside of the box. I mailed the unit the next day (I did make sure to send it receipt requested) and without 10 days received the GPS back. It seems to work just fine. They also included a rechargeable Li-ion battery. I didn't have to give them my credit card number. I think it's like anyplace else, you have good customer service reps and bad customer service reps.
  5. I have this unit and I love it. I've had no problems with it whatsoever. I've been caching with a friend who was using a Garmin and her unit would frequently lose sat. signal while under some tree cover while mine would still be receiving a fairly strong signal. I have dealt with Magellan's customer service in the past on a different GPSr I have, and they were friendly and helpful and the problem was fixed very quickly. It's like anything else, a few people can have a negative experience with something and it colors their opinion. For what it's worth, I would highly recommend this GPSr.
  6. We have itch weed or burn weed around here, I blundered into it once. It felt like ants running up and down my legs - similar to when your leg falls asleep and then you move it. I kept checking them expecting to find some sort of mark or welt but there wasn't anything there. It took about two days for the sensation to go away. My other half has told me if I get into the weed again, the best thing to do to help the burning is to put mud on it.
  7. GPS Treasure Chest (GCWPDC) is right outside of Philipsburg. It's an easy one. I'm not sure what county it's located in, though.
  8. It's curious you should say that. I have two GPSs. One I can upload waypoints to, which I had. The other one you have to manually enter the coords. Same coords for both - but they're showing ground zero as being about .3 miles apart. Compared coords to make sure they were the same. Yep. Based on the cache page, I knew the GPS which had the manually entered coords was probably right. And it was. I've never had that happen before. Kind of makes me think twice since I often only take the "good" GPS. It would be bad enough to be off searching in the woods and be .3 miles away from where I'm supposed to be but it just so happens that this was in town and my GPS was taking me directly to a school playground.
  9. Good for you! I have several caches on my to do list in your area. I'll make sure to say hello if we ever cross paths.
  10. Bell's Gap Puzzle was just published yesterday. It's the only one I've placed so far. Bell's Gap Rail Trail was just recently opened and there are other caches along the trail but they aren't mine. There are also a couple in the woods on there side of the road going up Rt. 865. When anybody is in the area again, I highly recommend Bell's Gap Trail II GC13T63. It's a beautiful spot and well worth the difficult terrain at the end. BoysNMe, I must have missed Ahoy there! I thought I had done all the ones around Glendale, I'll have to check it out. PeachyPA, I'll have to get some recommendations from you on ones in your area. We tried one this winter but weren't successful in finding it. The snow was just too high at the time.
  11. I've done that one. It's a very nice cache and very family friendly. Just down the road a bit is a new one - Bell's Gap Puzzle. It's a good one, too. (But I may be a bit partial).
  12. We've had some very warm weather here lately. I really wouldn't suggest doing that one right now.
  13. Killbuck Cache was a lot of fun as was Herman and Helen's Holiday Rambler. Enjoy!
  14. I don't remember reading this anywhere and a search didn't bring up what I'm looking for. I have no problem loading caches from a PQ to my GPSr. BUT - how do you load the other waypoint file that comes with your PQ? The one that has the parking coords or other points of interest. To load caches to my GPS, I just drag the GPX file from the zipped file to my desk top and from the desk top to Magellan Geocache Manager. From there I just select the files and hit Transfer. When I do that with the parking coordinates file, the file name shows up on my GPS but there isn't anything in it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  15. Thanks so much for your help. I'll give it a try this week sometime.
  16. I was given a Handspring Visor Platinum recently, which I'm finding out is a fairly old unit. Does anyone know anything about this model? From what I've read, it's comparable to a Palm. I have Windows XP on my computer - would it be compatible? The system requirements say for Windows 98 or 2000. I haven't tried to synch it, I don't want to mess up my computer. Would I be able to use CacheMate with it? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
  17. Rocks. This part of PA has lots and lots of rocks. Hollow logs and downed branches are good too.
  18. I have one and love it. I did the same thing - started on a 200 and within a year bought the 500. It took me a while to fully learn how to download PQs and the topo maps to it but once you learn it, it's an easy process. The easiest way is to drag and drop PQ files. The charge lasts a long time with the rechargeable battery pack although when I was using regular AAA batteries I was going through them like crazy. I bought my 500 online at Costco. I understand Magellan is doing away with the 500 series so you can get some great deals on them. Mine included the MapSend Topo software but I did have to buy the rechargeable battery pack separately.
  19. I have the Magellan 500 and love it although it did take me a few hours to learn all the ins and outs. If you go that route feel free to email me and I'll provide any help I can.
  20. I ran one this weekend and never received it. I waited about an hour, ran it again and received it in my email within 5 minutes. I didn't need it right away so I wasn't too worried about it. I'll just have to remember to do them in advance if I plan on going somewhere.
  21. Welcome! Good luck. Most importantly, have fun!
  22. Thank you for the list of water caches in PA. I'm looking forward to doing a few this summer. I was wondering about the best way to find water caches. Now I don't need to worry about it.
  23. I actually got into caching through a motorcycle forum I belong to. Great way to combine two addictive hobbies. A friend and I did several motorcycle/caching trips last summer and we're looking forward to doing more this summer. My husband and I enjoy riding in the evenings after work. Caching gives us a destination.
  24. There isn't anything there and I checked both internal memory and the SD. Maybe I'll shut off everything, restart and try it one more time. For some reason I still couldn't do it through GSAK but it worked with Magellan Geocache Manager with no problem. Weird!
